  1. I took a look at the pictures earlier, before the forums went down for a few.

Nice setup, are thoes RF-3s or RF-5s? Your parents must LOVE you.

Unfortunately I have to work my a** off while attending college to pay for my RF-7s and amp/premp setup. :(

Not to be a buzzkill or anything but James does state several times that he purchased all of the equipment himself so he is working his a$$ off too....just sooner then college :)

Great looking system I bet it sounds awesome. How do you like the Teac digital amp compared to the rest of the equipment you have tried?

  2. Man people ***** and moan that Klipsch abandoned the Heritage line and then ***** that it costs to much when they bring it back. Sigh you have to wonder why they bother. I mean the company has to recoup the development costs and manufacturing costs.

Perhaps you would like the skilled AMERICAN factory workers to take a pay cut or even better have it outsourced to China? Compared to what else is out there today speaker wise $4000 retail is very reasonable in my opinion.

  3. I agree with most of the drummers on here but I would have to add

    Bill Kreutzmann

    Mickey Hart

from the Grateful Dead. Now some may argue that the Dead is not a "rock" band and that they are both more percussionists than just drummers but I feel any discussion of all time great drummers must include them.

  4. I would agree with the people who say give it a try. Just make sure you use a test disc and a SPL meter to balance it all out. I have Cornwalls all the way around and it sounds much better when everything is balanced and rocking together.

  5. Just a couple of quick points:

An Internet connection will NOT be required to just play a disc. However if the AACS members decide that your brand and model of player have been hacked you will need to update the firmware via the Internet or from a ROM pack loaded on a disc (burned yourself or mailed to you from the manufacturer). If your player key is revoked you will still be able to play any discs made before the revocation date. Any discs after that date simply would not play.

AACS as adopted by the HD-DVD camp requires that a managed copy is available to users either for free or at some cost that a Studio or content provider decides to charge you. In other words every HD-DVD produced has to allow you to make a managed copy. A managed copy would allow you to make a full definition copy of the HD content and move it around to a Media Server, portable device, etc.. as long as the other device was also considered secure (MS Vista for example). If the device is not considered secure then a down rezzed copy (480p) would be allowed. Blu-Ray may also allow for this but it is not currently required as part of the standard. An Internet connection would be required before any managed copy could take place.

BD+ runs on top of AACS in a Virtual Machine (code running on a processor). This may allow the means for many hacks to take place even though FOX is touting it as a more secure system. On Blu-Ray devices both AACS and BD+ system will have to be satisfied before you can view the content. The major difference is that the content provider (Studios like FOX) can choose to update the code on their discs at any time using the BD+ system. So if FOX, for example, decides that your player has been hacked and they think that the AACS group is taking to long to revoke the player they can do it themselves via the BD+ system. HD-DVD on the other hand uses AACS and will follow the established rules before a player is disabled. The AACS group has a strict policy set that must be followed to revoke a player. This includes allowing the manufacturer time to come up with and distribute a fix.

Lastly this is all before the information gets to the chips that check to see if you have a HDCP compliant display or not!

  6. Your biggest problem is that with any rear projection CRT based TV the tubes are in the front center of the cabinet. Unless your speaker is shielded it will cause distortion when placed on the floor in front of the TV. With a Heresy I had to move it about a foot in front of the TV before the distortion went away. On the other hand speakers may be placed on the top with out any issues (if the cabinet can support it).

EDIT - Wow Frzinvt and I joined almost 1 year apart. He is from TX but living in VT and I from VT but living in TX. How weird is that? [:)]

  7. Art sure knows how to host an audio event! Not one Klipsch speaker in the house and I still stayed for over two hours! I one point I think there were at least 18 people there. These were some very serious guys with some very serious equipment, some commercially available, and some home built.

It was cool to meet Gary Dodd and hear his amps and preamp. They looked and sounded great, especially on Art's Dunvavys. Those 6 ft tall monsters may be the best direct radiators that I have ever heard.

And speaking of amplification, the 500 wpc Cary amps were really smooth, and gave the Dodd Audio tubes a run for the money, but IMO the tubes edged out the SS.

I was really impressed with the Halcro digital amp. The one that was brought to the event was a 5.1 unit, but we listened only in 2-channel (at least while I was there). Based on what I heard, that would make a killer HT amp.

Another interesting guy there was Danny Richie of GR Research. He had brought a pair tower type speakers that he designed. These were very detailed sounding with nice imaging and depth, but I still prefer the more forward sound of horns (IMO of course).

I really enjoyed hearing the tube/SS/digital amp comparisons with very good quality equipment representing each category. All sounded very good, albeit somewhat different.

It was also great to see Jeff (Eq_Shadimar) again, and to meet Bruce (Kriton).

I had to leave earlier than I really wanted, but I really enjoyed the event and the opportunity to hear some quality speakers of the non-horn type. BTW, no need to worry, I'm not gonna run out and sell my K-Horns or my Cornwall/Heresy HT. I'm still very happy with the Klipsch Heritage sound.

DITTO to everything above. I can't believe that I forgot to mention Danny Richie and Gary Dodd DOH..they are some smart guys. I too enjoyed meeting Kriton, Art and the others there. I certainly could have stayed much longer if I didn't have to get back up to Plano. It was very relaxing and I enjoyed the event!

Did I mention that I got to play some Black Label Society (Awesome Metal band) using the Dodd tube amps and the Dunlavy's [:D] That rocked!

  8. Just thought I would invite some of the local guys on this board to an Audio Circle get together being held at my house this weekend to listen to some different gear. Starts around 1PM and will send directions to anyone interested. We'll have food and soda's, but anything past that you'll need to bring yourself. We're planning on having 2 rooms going with the following gear:

    Amps:

    - Cary CAD500MB

    - Blue Circle NSCS integrated

    - NuForce Ref 8/9

    - Halcro

    - JC-1

    Sources:

    - Cary 303/300

    - MF A-5

    - Resolution Opus 21

    Speakers:

    - Focus Audio FS688

    - Dunlavy SC IVA

    - Gallo Reference III

I know, no Klipsch, but no one offered to bring any.

Send me an e-mail if interested and I'll shoot you some directions.

WOW is all I can say. No Klipsch but still an impressive range of equipment! The Dodd stuff was awesome. There were numerous smaller speaker that were awesome for their size but of course it is unfair to compare those to a Cornwall system. I came back from the meet and listened to much of the same material on my system and I have to say that in my opinion only the Dunlavy's/Dodd combo came close to beating it (and yes of course I am biased). Those Dunlavy's were sweet for sure but I still like the Cornwall/horn sound

I guess I am just a horn sound type of guy. It is hard to describe but it is like the difference between a BMW/Benz/Lexus and a 60's or 70's muscle car with a built V8. They both go fast and get you from point A to point B but one is much more fun and in your face then the other. So don't get me wrong the Dunlavy's were AWESOME but I like the horns.

I was very surprised at the cost of some of the equipment too. I mean I think I have a decent sounding system but with guys into $5200 pre-amps, $2600 amps, $500 interconnects, $200 power cords I would be embarrassed to host an event at my house (plain jane interconnects and zip cord speaker wire) even though it could be fun. I think I have at least 90% (or better) of the sound for just pennies on the dollar.

Art thanks again for hosting the event and please keep us informed of the next one. I have an AudioCircle account but I hardly go over there. I will have to check more often. It was a great time!

  9. Yup keep playing with the position of the speakers. You will find the sweet spot. It took me over 6 months to get my Cornwalls tweaked just so. Then I measured where they were just in case I ever had to move them!

  10. Ron -

From your other posts it seems like you are already listening to the Heresys and enjoying the sound!! If you are still in search of ampflication I can demo Heresys at my house with Fisher tubes, mid 90's HK SS, early 80's HK SS, and brand spanking new TI Digital amp technology. I have 6 Heresys and all the necessary receivers. If you really want you can listen to the Cornwalls too.

  11. This is a common issue. The problem is that over a digital link your receiver will perform bass management and route all bass below your setpoint (100, 80, 60 etc..) to your subwoofer thereby giving you loads of bass (esp of you have small speakers). Almost no receivers and very few players will perform any bass management on 5.1 analog signals. This is the main difference. If there is not any bass on the .1 channel your subwoofer will remain silent using the analog inputs/outputs.

Hope this helps to explain what is going on in your system.

  12. Wow thanks for all the awesome comments! I guess my system is ok after all..you know I was worried 2.gif

It was great having you all over and meeting some of the new Hornies in the DFW/North Texas Area. I have held enough of these demo to know that food+beer+cookies+good company=good reviews so I guess I am guilty of stacking the deck in my favor just a bit 1.gif

Just a couple of comments on tkdamerica's awesome review (that must have taken quite some time to write!!). The Star Wars demos were from The Phantom Menace - Pod Race Scene and Attack of the Clones - The Clone Wars and Asteroid Chase sequence. Also the classical disc with the vocals was a DVD-A of Beethoven's 9th.

I am glad that I converted some folks to the power of big speakers and massive subwoofers!! It is always a bonus to convert a significant other to big speakers, big woofers and big screens as well!! What a coup! Awesome news on the Fortes too.

It was a blast to host the event and I look forward to having everyone back again soon. I had a great time and really enjoyed everyone's company. So I guess that leaves one question...

    Who's next?

Sorry to hear that. I have nice bed in a spare room if you want to do a sleepover. So now you have to think..how bad do I really want to hear that system 1.gif

  16. This has been posted and discussed in the DFW Hornheads Yahoo group but I am posting it here as well in case there are people interested who are not a member of that group. The members of the Yahoo group that responded said that this Sunday 7/31/05 would owrk best for them. Here is part of my post to the Yahoo Group:

    ***************

I will keep the enitre day open so lets just say that you guys are free to come over from 1 PM until 11PM. That should give us plenty of time to listen to everything.

If you guys could to post the approximate times that you will be over that would be helpful as well. That way people who want some serious listening time with their own material can stagger their arrival. I think it would also be helpful if you guys post the demo material that you will be bringing.

It will be BYOB but I will have munchies available along with iced tea and water, I also plan to cook up some burgers if anyone is still around at dinnertime.

If anyone from the Klipsch forum is interested please send me a private message through the forum or join and post in the Yahoo group.

  17. In my opinion I didn't think is was nearly as good as "Get Shorty", the first movie in the series, but it was not horrible either. John seemed a little flat this time around and there was no banter that made the first one so good. A good popcorn flick and that is about it.

  18. Well so far not doing so good. The subwoofer output is kaput 7.gif Other than that I am enjoying the sound. I am still in the burn in process but this is a powerful clean sounding receiver so far. Very impressive for a unit that weighs about 17Lbs.

    More to come........
