About 10 years ago I met a neighbor 3 houses up, and somehow we got talking about tube stuff and he rebuilt tube amps and showed me two matching McIntosh mono blocks from 1955 he was real proud of. He moved years ago, bet he can help if I can find him!

Thanks, I'll see what I can find locally and get some help. Back in '01 or '02, I sold my Khorns to a guy who drove up from Norfolk to get them, and he brought up a 4 watt tube amp and they sounded amazing. Caught my cat napping and snapped him yawning real big! He was a good cat!

Here's a picture from the underside of the console, it doesn't look like it has had any recent work. Also, after playing for 30 minutes last night, this morning, it's dead. I pushed the circuit breaker, nothing happened. No smell or smoke. I bought it with hopes that it had recent work performed as the junk store owner claimed. This system has two interesting speakers, each roughly 12" x 12" x 20" with 12" woofers that look identical to Heresy woofers. The cabinets are made of what appears to be a compressed paper product, but plywood holding speakers. I hope to separate the pre-amplifier and amplifier and get them going.

Thanks for your help. I powered it up this evening and enjoyed listening to FM mono through one speaker for a half hour or so. It didn't smoke or smell bad. The bass was stronger than I thought it would be. I pulled the back off and the tubes were glowing, but it looks like it hasn't been worked on in a long time. Repair receipt included in literature dated 1974. Does have an electronics repair shop sticker on back that looks much newer, but no receipts. Looks dusty and typical for an old stereo from junk store. I will be sure not to leave it plugged in or leave the house with it playing. I will try to hook my late 70's turntable to it and enjoy some records, and that will justify the purchase. I believe it is from the early 60's (like me), so it must have had some work done to it to still be working. I included a picture from top side.

I just picked up a Stromberg Carlson console stereo, Integrity Series Component Ensemble, with ASR-660 pre-amp/ power amp combo and tuner SR-445-A at my favorite junk shop. The owner, who I have known for at least 10 years, told me it was playing in the house he was cleaning out, and he also said the previous owner apparently spent a lot of money having it refurbished a few years back. I powered it up in the store, and got volume from both channels, although I didn't pick up any stations inside the store. Tonight, I plan to power it up for the first time since buying it, and hope to pick some stations or see if the turn table works. Can I hook up anything modern to this setup? This is my first tube setup, and I'd appreciate any comments or tips about trying it out. Thanks in advance!

A local junk store has a near mint setup dropped off by the original owner - free of charge - a Panasonic SA-6800X 4 channel receiver with 4 large Akai speakers - each with a 15" woofer, mid, two dome tweeters and a horn tweeter. Has the joystick and owner's manual. They wanted 150 for everything. It was playing when I looked at it, but not set up correctly. All lights lit up in receiver, only questionable thing was the mute button didn't want to stay on at first, but eventually did after pressing it number of times. I'm not a fan of this setup, but I thought it might be worth buying for that price just to have. Whole setup is in really nice shape, speakers look great and edges are clean and real veneer is in great condition. Any words of wisdom?? Thanks in advance!!

Help me identify my over the weekend find at my favorite junk/thrift store. Large and heavy!! They are Altec Lansing, but no labels or model numbers to be seen, just attenuator faceplace on back of one says Altec Lansing and crossover 1500Hz.. Shining a light through the grill, I can see they have upper right mounted 12" diameter treated cloth coxial woofers (with little sectoral horns) and an approximately 4" x 10" or thereabouts horn in the bottom with large round ports. Grills are fixed, and I have not removed the backs, since they don't appear to have ever been opened. They were with an early 70's Pioneer receiver, which I passed on Same thrift store I found JBL L100 Century speakers with silver face Pioneer amp and tuner - they get a lot of estate stuff! I got them so cheap I almost felt guilty!

My KG4's need a top finish makeover - I looked at some finish restorer that claimed it would hide water marks, etc. The veneer is smooth, just stained. Has anyone used a product that would make these look good without too much work? This is the same junk store where I got an excellent Klipsch KSW-12 for 40 (it sounds great with the Heresy's), fixer-upper Cornwalls for 75, B & O Beogram 1700 for 10 (needs cartridge), Dual 1249 for 10 (should be good), Harmon Kardon HK-20 bookshelf speakers for 5 (sound good!), EV guitar speaker for 5, 1966 AR2ax speakers with literature in a custom made solid cherry console cabinet with Fisher SS for 22. Hint - I've never spent more than 75 on any stereo stuff...I've bought 5 dollar bicycles, a ton of garden hand tools cheap - 1950's matchbox cars, exercise equipment, furniture, vintage cool stuff like an antique heavy solid brass vintage ashtray with a solid copper bust of King Tut attached to it (son got it), 1939 copper world's Fair plate, you name it!

I enjoy reading what others here have found at junk stores. I found this entire system at a junk store last week for a song. It sounds great! I love the blue florescent wattage meters - I had a similar one back in '79.

I have one Altec N-800-D crossover network. I last used it in the early 80's and it has not been used since. Is it worth enough to get checked out prior to selling it, or would I be better off selling it "as is"? Thanks in advance.

I just bought a KSW-12 subwoofer at a junk store in Central VA for 40 dollars and it sounds great with my Heresys. In really nice condition too. Also at this store was a hugh 1966 Fisher solid state console stereo with Gerard TT and nice AR3A birch speakers inside - all for 22 dollars, and included all the original sales receipts and literature for all of it from 1966! I passed on it the other day but I will get it tomorrow for sure if it hasn't sold. I should have grabbed the AR3A's for 22 dollars and told them to keep the rest! At the same store a 15" Dahlquist sub for 50 dollars - I passed on it. This is the same store where I got some Cornwalls for 75 dollars, which ended up being a so-so deal as they had Pyle woofers and needed one tweeter diaphram.

Well done! Do they sound any different with the foam vs the original paper based damping material? You have inspired me to get going with my '75 Cornwall restoration!

I stumbled across these at a junk store for $75 in central VA on Friday. Of course I bought them. They need woofers (the Pyle Professional Premier Series woofers do work fine) and tweeter diaphrams. Just bought a set of diaphrams from B & K. They'll sound fine for the work shop. I do plan to improve the finish and vacuum the mouse poo out of them. The major problem I ran into so far was discovering that the woofer cut-outs were "hacked" to make room for the Pyles to fit on the outside. Oh well, some day I may do a "graft" if I get some correct woofers....

Just another brass player checking in, I also play a silver Bach Stradivarius, and Trombone too! Silver plate would look great on the brass horn! Another question - Is the K-401 preferred over the K-400? I have a single La Scala with a K-400 and an extra K-401 I bought in '96 to use to make a mate for it....never did. I need to sell one horn, I thought about replacing the K-400 in the La Scala with the K-401 and selling the spare, along with the new La Scala x-over I got in new at the same time. I use it along with K-horns with K-400 mids. Suggestions??

Sounds interesting, falls right on my 22nd wedding anniversary and is within easy driving distance from Madison, VA. I'm sure my wife would enjoy everything about the whole experience except for listening to me beg for tube equipment all the way home....

I listened to the McIntosh briefly before I loaded up the Cornwalls and subsequently decided to buy it. It is now sitting on one of the Cornwalls waiting for me to clear out my stereo cabinet to hook it up...... they all sounded great together for the few minutes I auditioned them! I will definately get this happy family back online this week!
