  1. A large (tall) center speaker would need to either place the screen very high up and or make it smaller, unless you were using an accoustically tranparent screen and the speaker(s) is located behind the screen which is sometimes done, more often in large theaters. For convenience it is easier to use a center speaker that is horizontally designed which is easier to place either under or above the screen. Yeah...but what about a smaller square shape like the thx center? I wasn't referring to another tower...you're telling me that price aside, most here couldn't fit thx frontstage in their room without transparent screen? I disagree...that's all.
  2. Disagree slightly. Why couldn't Klipsch just make cheaper versions of it's THX system? No bulky towers and you could use different drivers, tweeters, crossovers etc to cut cost down the line. The thx system is 100% built for ht. The floor standing designs are for both ht and 2 channel. And I’m honestly a little surprised they haven’t built a smaller more affordable version. I'd be down for a THX Select II HT from Klipsch! I think the center is kind of the deal breaker in that system in most set ups. Plus imo you could spend way less than that buy internet direct subs and have a better set up. I have heard thx system and it does sound great though. Well, maybe the center channel is an issue for people who have theater setups in their living room, but with a dedicated HT I'm not sure the size is an issue...wouldn't be in my setup. The real issue for most I would think is the price tag![+o(] Definitely agree about the subs too.

  4. I think you're missing the point. Sounds like jasonjcarney is arguing that 3 identical across the front isn't hands down better than the above setup with that company's equivalent center channel...he never said it was worse. I tend to side with jasonjcarney for a slightly different reason. I have an extremely hard time believing most people can hear a difference when it comes down to it. Eyes closed i don't believe most people would identify a fronstage consisting of 2 RF-7's and a RC64 as being "worse" than 3 RF-7's. The "real theaters don't use specially designed center channels" argument is garbage to me because the majority of nice theaters sound inferior to a well designed home theater. I personally have a hard time reading through audio threads in particular. One man's "huge improvement" is another man's "I don't hear a difference". I don't like to discount science and specs and numbers, but when I fire up a movie or crank up some tunes, I'm not looking at charts and graphs. I know you guys disagree with eachother, but as far as I'm concerned jasonjcarney's word resonates a bit more with me after admitting a $700 amp didn't do much of anything in his setup. Takes a real solid dude to say that after dropping a fat wad on something everyone else claims blew them away with improvement. On a side note, why does it seem Klipsch went against conventional thinking with the THX system? Smaller form factor, no dedicated center speaker...why not start there and make cheaper versions down the product line and ditch the whole tower speaker/center channel combo altogether?
  5. RC-3, soon to go to an RC-62. A tower speaker wouldn't fit under my screen. What three towers did you listen to in an HT set-up? I've heard RF-82s and Paradigm monitors. I thought that the vocals for the three RF-82s were equally good to my RC-3, but the soundstage was more seemless. Now you go. Wait, the 3 RF82's were equally good to your RC-3? Did I miss something... shouldn't a Rf-82 as a center channel blow away an RC-3?
  6. How about the logistics? How many people have a theater area that will handle, oh I don't know, 3 RF-7's? Not only would most have to flip the center tower on it's side, but then you'd have to center the tweeter with the main listening position, which sort of defeats the purpose of 3 identical speakers according to that link. I fear it may look slightly on the retarded side. I have a decent sized room, and I wouldn't be able to handle the physical dimensions of the "3 identical front speakers" option. Obviously my point doesn't tackle sound, but aesthetics count for something too.
  7. I forgot the original question but if you are serious about audio, I recommend moving to the states where the Klipsch gear flows like wine. My nickname on my high school basketball team was El Tigre' Blanco, so I have a vested interest in this thread and shall follow it closely. Good luck with your search senor!
  8. To be clear that state is personal opinion. I couldn't disagree more. Wow... Direct hit. I like it here.
  9. What about sitting closer to the screen/speakers? How far are you now from the center channel?
  10. What a fantastic looking center channel there![Y] And boy those surrounds look menacing!
  11. You seem to be a bit more restrained in your description of a separate amp than some. I am running what I would call a budget amp setup, (3 Audiosource 100's bridged @160watts for front stage) and haven't tested this setup for movies yet. I have tested it for two channel music though, wiring the right channel off of the Onkyo and wiring the left off of one of the Audiosource amps. There WAS a difference in some rock music I played at fairly loud volumes, vocals did seem a bit more forward in the mix, so to speak. I would listen directly in front of each speaker for 30 seconds at a time and then bounce over to the other for a comparison. I will follow up with my thoughts after setting everything up for HT, but it's my belief that in my space I might not hear a difference between the amps and AVR due to the constantly changing audio of a movie versus the constant charge of a 4-5min song. (The comparo was with a pair of Rf62's) Again, this is my experience with my cheap amps, but i will say this. I spent about $200 for all 3, but if I spent $600+ and got similar "improvement", I'd be pissed. That also speakes to my expectations, income level, etc.. For the money I spent, I will take the minor bump in audio quality, but for me the fact that my Onkyo may run cooler/more efficiently is the real benefit..at least for my money.
  12. Nice. How much of a difference did all of the sound treatment make? i have heard it's benefits in a recording studio type atmosphere, not home theater though.
  13. Wow, there's an honest (and rare) opinion! Unless you are driving the amp to clipping and the amp can handle the impedence of the speakers, you probably won't notice. I don't either. Interesting...Do you think this is do to some (not all) people "hearing" the amount of money they spent on an amp versus an actual improvement?
  14. Can someone explain what is going on here please? I see 2 speakers with black fronts aparently sitting on their sides stacked up with a towel between them to the left. On top of them sits a 3rd speaker that appears as though it may topple over at any minute. On top of the TV looks to be another double stack of center channels? The DSX front height speakers seem to be of the slightly larger variety than I had ever imagined someone would actually use. So we have a total of 8 front speakers (maybe 2 of them are subs or something?) and a pair of mini surrounds in back of what appears to be a second row of elevated seating? Is that a sub off the the far right under the lamp or just an end table? My above comment was directed at this pic...
  15. Pretty sweet setup if you ask me.
  16. Could always try a different paint formula...but something tells me you don't like to paint![] I will try to find the exact ratio's to the formula I used. I remember the ingredients, but not quite sure on the amount of each. It included Polycrylic, Behr Premium Ultra Pure Flat White and 3 tubes of reflective craft paint from Michael's. My only regret was not taking pictures of the before and after because the differences between the above forumula and what I used prior (which i believe was Behr Silverscreen) were startling.
  17. While not nearly as fancy with the touch screen, etc., your Onkyo's remote is a learning/programmable remote that can be setup to control all of your devices, according to Onkyo's website. If you don't need RF capability and it works, it would save a hefty chunk of coin.
  18. Before people rush to judgement here, allow me to clarify. Fact 1: Not sure why it's funny, but yes on the CRT. Guilty as charged. Upgrade coming soon! Fact 2: As for the "Cinevision with upgraded board". I just wanted to let the good folks here know I wasn't using some run of the mill, entry level, white van CRT. The Cinevision, especially with the upgraded board, allows better blacks (which is good for movies), smoother scaling, color picture and improved reception. Fact 3: This one is a little embarrassing for me. The mustache is most definitely real. I would never disrespect a family member by wearing a fake mustache to their wedding...BUT, the mustache has admittedly been augmented with women's mascara. The mascara allow me to fill in the natural gaps I have in my beard which allows my facial hair to look more thick and robust. I was more or less run out of the Polk audio forums, mostly because they didn't tolerate what they didn't understand, I.E., the mascara, so I'm hoping you guys are a little more open minded.
  19. I just got this AVR and hooked it up for the first time last night. Don't have much info for you, but I am really liking the unit so far, enjoy yours!
  20. +1 to this...I upgraded from a Pioneer VSX-920 (already much more current than your AVR) to the above mentioned Onkyo. Everything about the RC180 is superior to the Pioneer...options, menus, quality, power, preamp outputs, etc. For $349 shipped (keep in mind the Pioneer was only $100 cheaper), it seems to be a fantastic upgrade to a system, especially for that price. Another good reason for me ditching Pioneer? Global crossover...worthless IMO. As for subs, I also agree with the Elemental Designs recommendation. Prices include shipping and customer service is fantastic. The Emotiva Ultra12 does have that tiny footprint going for it (WAF).
  21. WOW that's different, sounds like your kind of not normal..........I like it. You fit in perfect. Welcome It's good to know that there's like minded individuals out there who appreciate my MacGuyver-esque approach to home theater. And to answer your inevitable follow up question, yes that's me in the avatar pic posing at my brother's wedding.
  22. Does the onkyo run cooler now that it's just passing the signal along to the Emotiva?
  23. I'm sure with some basic hand tool skills, a sheet of glass and some lefover xenon and neon gasses you could probably build your own. We've all heard the old saying...If you can assemble pre-fab furniture, you can build your own plasma panel. If you go this route, don't forget the pics!
  24. Sharp looking mounts!
