  1. T2K, Heh, he did say this in a double-negative sort of way.

This is extremely interesting to me - I do like first hand evidence (even on a topic as subjective as this). I also am using all freebie IC's that came with the cheap CD\DVD stuff.

I've been planning on a serious upgrade... Now, I'm not so sure how much time and $ I should put into this.

As I mentioned in the other thread, based on my experience in the communications world, I do know shielding\grounding can be a necessity when comm wires are mixed up with power wires, ballasts, transformers, ect.

    Hmmmm.[:#]

  2. Whew, Ok. I think I understand some of that.

    My amps:
    Input sensitivity/impedance 1 V/30 kohm
    S/N ratio 116 dB

    The preamp has:
Hum and Noise < 1 uV @ rated output
    Channel Separation > 40 dB
Frequency Response +/-0.25 dB, 6 Hz to 80 KHz
Rated Output Level 3 v RMS

    Speakers are:
    SENSITIVITY:
    100dB @ 1watt/1meter

I can't find info on what changes that "output High\Low" switch does. I assumed I'd leave it at low, but I guess I'll just have to try it!

  3. In search of the lowest "hiss" levels, would it be correct to have the output switch (hi\lo) on my Marantz 3300 on low? I haven't tried it on high, probably don't need to.

What specification best indicates level of hiss?

Basically, when I'm listening at higher volume levels and a quiet passage comes up, I can hear background hiss. It's almost unnoticeable on some tracks, while others are quite bad.

Do I also need to consider upgrading from standard CD's? I have read up alot of the threads here about quality changes from CD to SACD and it seems to be a crapshoot unless you really know what you're doing and stick with known good recordings.

    TIA.

Edit: Marantz 3300 into Marantz MA-500's to KLF20's with Ti tweets.

  4. Hello.

It's not so much your punctuation. This site makes punctuation hard unless you tweak your browsers, so that can be forgiven.

But dude. Please provide complete thoughts and sentences. Maybe type like you talk (assuming you are proficient with English, maybe it's a 2nd or 3rd language for you)?

I'm sure people would love to discuss your thoughts and ideas, but you'll really need to be able to present your thoughts in a more formal fashion before you'll have a decent conversation.

    Good luck.[:D]

  5. Well, I'm fairly new here. But I think, based on the evidence you've described, this is not a speaker problem. Obviously, it's not a amp problem as your previous speakers (in the same room, same location\height?) sounded fine.

It seems to me (this I've learned on this site) is that you really need to find another amp to borrow and try. It sounds like a bad match between the speakers and amp.

I say this, because as I swap different amps driving a set of KLF-20's, I'm amazed and surprised at the LARGE differences in sound quality. I had no idea there was such a variety of sound among different amps (and pre's, I guess we have to include them).

I wouldn't drop more cash yet. I'd research with diff equip to isolate exactly what's happening. You're still at the guessing stage, methinks.

  6. If the motherboard replacement corrects the problem, then it probably is a hardware problem (although the possibility exists that the new motherboard is still fine, and it downloaded an update that "broke" it).

But, I'd lean towards hardware as the techs suggest.

Sounds like you've been thru the ringer already - I'd call, write and email numerous people at Denon show them the link to the new webpage I just built describing all my problems with the unit in horrifying detail. I would ask for either a new unit of equal capability or my money back. They will give you a new one I bet.

The other thing I'm thinking is that, here is Iowa, we do have a lemon law that doesn't just apply to vehicles. If a manufacturer tried 3 times to fix a major problem, and fails - you get a new one.

Sorry, did try to help on the technical side - I don't think there's much you can do there.

  7. Hi and welcome.

Some questions are "beneath" the standards that the pro's will answer here - I had one myself.

I'm not a pro, but I'll throw out a little info. If the equipment he'll be hooking to the Denon is newer, it should have HDMI which simplifies the process. Don't spend too much either~

Buy at least 3 of these and then add one more for each additional piece of equip.

Then, you'll want some speaker wire, Something like this would be fine~

Some people like to have connectors on the ends of the cables, I think these will work ~

    http://www.amazon.com/Connector-Banana-Plugs-Screw-Black/dp/B003BKW2K2/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_b

There are places to buy speaker cables with the ends already installed, people here are fond of monoprice.com, but I haven't purchased anything from them myself.

As I said, I'm kind of a newbie here, hopefully if I'm wrong about any of that, then the pro's will correct me.

    Good luck.

EDIT: forgot to say, make sure you get the proper length cables!

  8. Thanks for the comments~ yes, some of that cable does have 'advanced" features. As I mentioned, I work with communications (building automation) and so have access to a variety of high-quality twisted, shielded, mulitconductor with the drain wire. If I end up building my own, I'll use that.

But if I could find a similar interconnect with RCA's, I'd consider buying it. Doesn't look like that's going to happen tho.

  9. Whew, alot of options. I'm fairly well tempted to build my own interconnects, but I was looking for a pre-built with RCA ends, shielded with a ground wire and couldn't find one.

I do some communications work and am fond of shielded wire with access to ground that shield to a ground bus. I think that would be a good idea with the interconnects, as I was unable to keep the signal wire away from the power wire. Can such a thing be purchased, or will I end up making my own?

I did find "shielded" interconnects, but you couldn't hook up the drain...

    TIA

  10. While I sure don't come close to the knowledge M.James has on the KLF-20's, I do have a set and can comment on the bass output.

First off, I did put the Ti's tweets in them at Moray's suggestion and am glad I did. I like plenty of high end, and that helped alot.

Ran them off a new Marantx 80wpc SR-4023 and they sounded pretty good. Lacking somewhat on the bass and when the RW-12D came up for cheap, I bought one. Put it in with the KLF-20's and it helped but I just wasn't happy with the crossover\sound. Something just not right, I thought.

Then, I snagged a couple of Marantz SA-500 mono-blocks. Used an older Marantz preamp (the 3300) with the monoblocks and things immediately sounded better. I SHUT DOWN the RW-12D and cranked up the bass controls on the 3300 and it was like opening the door to the room where the speakers were (in a virtual way) hiding. The bass is really, really good! It's got *nearly* the punch of the RW-12D with alot more clarity. I'm pretty sure I didn't actually have the sub set up properly to work just right with the KLF-20's but now I don't need the sub at all. And the high end seems more separated than with the SUB & SR-4023.

This wasn't exactly the info you were looking for, but I did want to add my experience with the bass end of the KLF-20's.

Anyone want to buy a new-ish Marantz SR-4023??? LOL

  11. I had pre-ordered mine and they shipped from klipsch with the extra 3 (I think that's right, I have so many bags of extra earbuds in the drawer). I also got a clip but no cleaning tool.

Ya, I think the output from these might be on the low end, but I'm okay with that, I have kinda sensitive ears.I'm not crazy about the fit and sound of theS4a. But I'll use them and maybe grow to be fond of them.

  12. LOL, on the board that I currently admin, I've been cussed because I've put in a 10 character minimum post limit.

I told them, if you can't drag two or three words out of your head, and put them in the post, then you don't need to be posting. Ha. They hate me. [8o|]

    The Signatures never bothered me....

It's when you get an email notification or you come to the site and see the new post list, go to the new post after several clicks and the response is

    +1

What is the point of that and WHO cares? Some members just post to get their post count up. Also offering advice when they don't have a clue on this earth of what they are talking about.

  13. I also went for Plasma. Mine is in the basement, so no high levels of light to deal with. The plasma's seem to have a "smoother" image and of course, the colors seem rich and the blacks are black.

It was also cheaper than similar LCD's at the time. :)

Mine can get some minor burn in from gaming. Letting it run the "screen refresh" for a few hours gets rid of it tho.
