  1. Once you get the correct woofer in there that is designed for a ported enclosure, you can adjust the mid/tweeter to best match the woofer level and your listening habits. The woofer is your reference.
  2. To save some money of the Premium Sweetie, but still keep it "dual mono" for all intents and purposes, you can use the same power transformer and split off each channel using a separate rectifier & filter for each channel. A shared power transformer does no harm and still has excellent performance for both channels. Something to think about when wanting to build the premium version and maybe want to save a few dollars.
  3. Nice basement! I know that drop ceiling and cinderblock wall... Mine is similar, but shoebox shaped. Runs the entire length and width of the house. It was finished by the previous owner and my main listening area is a bit smaller than I would like, but still a good size space. Nice speakers too.
  4. In the early 80's, I worked at Crutchfield in Jacksonville Florida. It was a great time and although we did not have the high-end stuff, I got to listen to a ton of good mid-fi gear. Good times, no doubt. When we wanted to listen to the high-end equipment, we would go over the the local "boutique", they knew who we were and they would condescend to let us listen to "real equipment".
  5. Hey Claude - Radio Shack had a few decent drivers (woofers, mids & tweeters) back in the day. The Minimus-7's were great for their size with a sub. Still sought after today with that sturdy metal enclosure.
  6. For example, in the Cathodyne phase splitter, you could use carbon composition resistors with no noise penalty because this type of phase splitter has no gain. However, the LTP phase splitter has some gain and for the lowest noise you would not want to use a carbon composistion resistor.
  7. The wrong type of resistor in the circuit can make a difference. It depends on where you put it. For example, for a plate load resistor, in a high gain microphone amp, you typically would not want to use a standard carbon composition if you are looking for a low noise circuit. Will the carbon composition resistor work? Yes. They use to recommend a "cracked carbon" resistor which was low noise back in the day, now you can use low noise carbon film or metal film. Typically, if a resistor sets any kind of gain or has high(er) current running through it, you want it to be low noise.
  8. A "sailor" can be a bit much, however, I have found that someone from New York or New York/Italian, is more refined...
  9. The original AR-5 is a cousin of the AR-11. The AR-5 has a 10" woofer though. I can't wait to get the AR-5 clones up and running. I have procured the replacement 1.5" midrange and 1" soft dome tweeter. The crossover will need to be designed from the ground up with the help of REW.
  10. I am curious what other main loudspeakers forum members have. I'll start: Original Advent Loudspeaker - I found these in an antique store for $100 and had to refoam the woofers. I recapped them too. Extremely inefficient, but sound awesome with power behind them. It is one of the few speakers that sounds great with no EQ or tone controls. The original tweeter is not up to modern standards, but for what it is, I don't mind it. NHT Super One - Another inefficient speaker, but they sound great for a small bookshelf. Believe it or not, the foam woofer surround is still intact and feels like new. Original AR-5 - Parts and (new) pieces to build a set of clones. Not complete. Advent Heritage - Refoamed woofers and recapped. Sound similar to the Original Advent, but better tweeter. Low-end is not as pronounced. AR-15 - Small bookshelf speaker Advent AV-570 powered speakers Various components such as subwoofers, woofers, mids, tweets and horns for future projects. Most of these items are high efficiency type drivers except the raw sub drivers.
  11. Welcome to the forum, we've got fun & games... Seriously though, welcome.
  12. When you change your name you confuse me. This forum is confusing enough.
  13. I can't either. I think Schu did it because he was bored...
  14. A list needs to be made of the Top 100 (we will limit it to 100, although the list could be much longer) Audiophile System Enhancements that cannot be measured. Then we can discuss reality vs urban legend.
  15. For aluminum, you want to use an acid etch primer. Regular primer will not adhere to the aluminum properly.
  16. The diaphragms on the mids may need to be replaced although they “work”. They do age and need replacement in some cases.
  17. Russia could not even build a reliable rocket engine, that is why we beat them to the moon. Plus, we took the smarter German scientists. von Braun was one smart guy.
