  1. That looks right, and I am jealous. BTW, I see in your diagram you are using wides as opposed to highs for the 8th and 9th channels. If you go to an 11.2, do you make high and wide fronts?

edit: if you are placing the mains behind the screen, I think they face straight out. In most HT's they are toed in to just behind the main (sweet spot) seating position. If you are not elevating the rear seating, you should stagger it so the people behind can see. Of course that all depends too on how high up your screen is. You should have no more than 15 degrees from the eye height to the center of the screen vertically from any seat.

Yes that is what I am thinking wide and height. I will most likely end up with 11.2 as I am currently looking for the last pair. I would love to stumble across another pair of La Scalas or maybe do the 1/4 pie setup for the front 3 speakers. It would be awesome if I was able to do the 1/4 pie setup for the front 3 and have a pair of La Scalas for surrounds, HIPs for heights, 3002s for width and then my HPS sr-70 for side surrounds.

  2. Rears and surrounds are supposed to be ambient. They should not be aimed at the audience, as it is best that the sounds come from everywhere rather from a specific axis. I spoke to an engineer at Danley who said that he knows of people who use the 10's as rear decks, and face the mouth toward the front of the theater. IMO, you should call Danley and get some input.

I will call them and see what they suggest... If I can use the subs as a riser or put them in the riser it would work out great I think.

  3. Thanks all for the answers. I have been out all day and so no reply until tonight. The caps on the crossovers are all original and I don't know if the prior owners did anything besides run them. Of course mods interest me if I can see the value to them. I have thrown money at problems before without truly knowing what the problem was and it never works out well doing that. My preference would be to hear the difference first though and so if there is anyone close to southern middle Tennessee that has done so and is willing to let me hear the results I would appreciate it. I will dig into some of these suggestions over the next week and report back as to what I have found.

You all might be entertained by where my "home" system will be. Out in my shop somewhere in front of my Haas VF4 CNC mill. I was reading of a tweeter horn designed and milled out of wood on one of the posts here and it got the wheels spinning in my mind as this kinds of things would be real easy for me to do.

You might be able to make some wood horns, and maybe make them for others for a little side cash too. I would def replace the caps even if it is just with some inexpensive Dayton caps... That is what I did. Now I am doing a 2 way setup with a brand new set of Bob Crites crossovers.

  4. This is what I was thinking of for my room...

Does that look right? WOuld my main channel speakers be angled toward the main position? Would my other channels be aimed toward the main listening position or do they just get aimed straight out from the wall and angled downward toward the main listening position?

I am also thinking of moving the subs to be under the second row seating or under the side channels.

  5. Stereo pair, et Cetera

So are you saying I should setup each pair as if it was by itself in a stereo pair for best imaging and stage depth? Which would mean when I do the surrounds I would turn the listening position around 180 degrees, correct?

  6. I should be ready to start arranging my speakers for the Home Theater in the next few weeks... What is the suggested way to setup where they go? Should I just do the suggested angles for a 9 point setup or do i take the front main channels and set them up as I would for a stereo pair with the best imaging and soundstage depth?

  7. How about the Denon X4000, since you can get a good deal onit... Or even the 4520?

I guess my real question is, is Denon considered warm also and then I will be pairing a warm amp with a warm AVR will that create issues? both of those Denon receiver's are an option but he is giving me $900 credit for my amp which is crazy since I've had it for two years. I would prefer to stay as low as I can go and still have Adyssey x 32 and pre outs. thanks for your input

If you are getting $900 for your old one in trade you will be getting the X4000 for under $100!

  8. If you haven't had a projector before... You are going to be in Heaven now! I have been watching everything on projectors since about 1990. We started out with a 10' 4x3 screen, then a 106" 16x9, and now a 134" 16x9. We watch TV, Movies, and browse the internet on it too!

  9. Well the DIY sub is off the to do list for now... As I now have 2 Danley DTS-10 subs. :) I am hoping I am able to match them to my La Scalas sonically. We might be starting on the new HT as soon as next week! I am hoping to get it completed far enough to start testing speaker positions in a couple of weeks, and then once that is all finalized do the sound proofing and acoustic treatments. :)

Does anyone know if this would be a good amp to drive the Danley DTS-10 subs?

Congrats on the Danleys and welcome to the club. PM sent.

    Thanks... PM sent. :)

  10. 10 watts would be 110 db. 100 watts would be 120db. 1000 watts would be 130db.

The overhead wattage will give you the peaks you want when listening at high rms. The smaller amp would not. I think you are making the right choice.

I just went to GC and got the last Yamaha P7000S that GC has in stock in the USA! I took advantage of their 15% off Holiday pricing which made it a very good deal IMO since their price before thew discount was the same as everyone else on this model. The salesman wanted me to buy a QSC or a Crown but I have had both for a short time in the past and they both had unacceptable fan noise. Everything I have heard about the Yamaha says there is zero fan noise! It should exceed any power requirements I will ever have and hopefully last for a very long time. For reference level I am just seeking 115 on peaks for the sub.

  11. Yeah the Danleys are rated at 100db with a 2.83v input and will take 1000 watts continuous with a 2000 watt peak. I will be surprised if i ever even hit 500 watts out of the amp to hit the levels I listen too... I think that in normal use I might even only use 100 watts of the Yamaha to hit the levels I want... At least that is what I hope to get out of them. I will get the amps but I won't be able to test them out for a few months. :(

  12. According to the Danley Tech... I should be able to hit reference level with the Danleys with 250-500w before i take into consideration my room loading for a listening position of 15'. Since Guitar Center is having a 15% off sale I think I will just get the P7000S instead of the P3500S. I should have more than enough power with reliability and a very quiet fan (the bad thing about the Behringer, QSC, and Crown amps).

  13. Will I have a problem reaching reference level with the P7000S since the amp is a +8dbu... or should I just go with the P3500S which is +4dbu?

Disregard as you already answered my question while I was typing. :)

  14. I saw where someone made this comment...

"I recently purchases this amp to power the Cerwin Vega, EL36B Subwoofers. The reason I chose this amp be because 1. I am only a hobby DJ, so funds were an issue and 2. I had only 2 rack units left, so no room for an amp and a cross over. The amp looks great and is light weight too! The set up I'm running sounds awesome! So awesome the subs are vibrating the sheet rock out of the walls. I have an entire wall where the sheet rock nails are visible. Enough about my situation, let me let you know the pros and cons of the amp.

PROS: light weight, various ways of connecting, BIG POWER Rating, cross over built in, PRICE, AWESOME heat protection. I ran it for 8 HRS at max volume (slight clipping) and the unit never overheated or turned off.

CONS: none, except unlike most amps the input is rated at 8dBu, where on most amps the input is 4dBu, so the amp takes forever to clip, but doesn't sound as great until 8dBu..." .

What does this mean? Will it be harder to drive with my Denon 4520ci to reference level?

  15. I was worried as I saw some posts saying the Yamaha was not good below 20hz... I am glad to hear they can get the job done. Should I run the amp as a stereo amp or in parallel mode?
