  1. Looking into reconing local. Got a few of questions: 1. Based on the issues I have tried to describe, are you certain (or relatively certain) reconing will fix the issue? I know it is impossible to tell without hearing the issues for yourselves, I just don't want to spend the money on reconing (especially both woofers) if there isn't, say, a better than 90% chance that will fix the issue. 2. What is a decent market price for a recone? I don't have to have the deal of the century price, I would just like to know an reasonable amount so I konw if someone is trying to rip me off! 3. Any forum members in or around the Tampa ever use Speaker Exchange in Tampa? Looks like they have been around a long time, and they a very close to me location wise. Again, thanks for all the help guys!
  2. Ok, bad news. I switched the woofers and the problem followed the woofer. The exact same distorted noise is coming from the active. It has a "rattle" feel to it. It is still producing bass and operating. It's much more noticable at higher volumes. I looked at the woofer itself and nothing seems to be out of place. I don't see any rips or tears. So, what do you guys think about replacements? Also, any user feedback on the upgraded mid horn diaphragms?
  3. Cool, those will go good with my Crites titanium midrange diaphragms! You're bad Dean. Find out the panel that's giving you the problem and we'll go from there. Typically if it's a glued panel, you clean the old glue and re-glue. If it's a screwed on panel, remove the screws, replace the gasket and re secure. You can always try to re-tighten first though. Will do, on a mission now.
  4. Generally speaking; what is the fix? Srews, nails, cauk, glue, sledgehammer? :-) Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
  5. Thanks for all the replies and help guys! I'm starting to buy into the rattle theory. There is no distortion that I am able to detect from the speaker at all when played at lower levels. It's only once the woofer starts really moving at higher volumes that the distortion becomes present. As stated above, if the speaker was failing internally, I would think the volume wouldn't impact the presence of the distortion if the speaker were blown. I don't think there is a rip in the cone anywhere as the the passive is still responding properly when I apply pressure to the woofer. I haven't had a chance to pull the speakers out and switch them yet because of work being done in the house and holiday guests arriving today, but I should be able to carve out some time this weekend. If it is rattle, are there any "usual suspects" that I should be checking for? Maybe a dried out or cracked gasket or something like that? Is this line known for having cabinet issues, as I know other lines have issues with cabinets?
  6. The active (front) or passive (rear)? The active.
  7. Good point. I'm about 80% certain its the woofer, but I will confirm it before making any changes and report back. Ah, glad I asked! Thanks!
  8. I do not have now, nor have I ever had any Ti mid-range diaphragms for the Quartet or any other Klipsch speaker. Bob Crites Ah, I see now that I assumed it was TI. My mistake!
  9. Ok, two seperate topics here. 1. So, I suspect I have a blown subwoofer in one of my quartets. I'm getting horrible rattling sounds out of the woofer on lower frequencies, which isn't being mirrored in the other woofer. I haven't had a chance to really dig in yet, as we are in the middle of house repairs and getting ready for holiday guests. My sincere hope is that the issue is a minor tear in the cone that can be patched up rather easily. Somehow, I doubt that is the case. So, the options as I see them are: a. Reconing - I would take it to a local professional or ship to anyone who offers the service on here. b. Find an exact replacement. Hard to do, though there is one listed on Ebay that will cost over $100 shipped. Otherwise, I need to wait and find a part out or something along those lines. c. Replace them both with different drivers. I'm intrigued by option C and am curious to see if there are newer drivers out there that may actually increase performance. I guess my dream scenario here would be to find a relatively inexpensive set of speakers on, say, Parts Express that I drop right in and notice an immedeate improvement. (I know that is idealistic to the extreme, just work with me here!) That all being said, what are the important specs of the current model (K-10-K) that I would need to look to match in a potential replacement? I wouldn't be adverse to changing the screw hole locations, but changing the diameter of the woofer opening is out of the question for me. I am not adverse to options A or B, but for the money, C seems like it may be a better use of funds. So, anyone change out woofers on their Quartets lately? 2. I noticed that Crites now has a new batch of the mid-range diaphragms in stock. Has anyone had a chance to listen to this new batch? Something I think I saw in another thread alluded to the fact that you may need to change your crossovers a bit to account for the changes in sound. It could be that I misunderstood the post, but does anyone know if that is true? I have also seen it mentioned in the past that the performance gains to the mids is much less noticable than TI in the tweeters. Given that the new diaphragms are $77 shipped, and the woofer issue above, I would be loath to commit extra funds for only minimal gains in performance (if that statement is true). Thoughts, feelings, opinions?
  10. Somebody help me out! I bought Bill's Acurus amp and need to recoup some cash! That being said, they are hooked up to the above mentioned amp and ready for audition if you are in or near Tampa. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
  11. Great piece of equipment, thanks again! Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
  12. Item is sold/traded! It pains me to do it, but I need to sell one set of my speakers. They are in excellent functional condition and sound amazing. They will come with Bob Crites titanium diaphragms installed with the stock diaphragms included. Disclosure items: -There is a watermark on the top of one of the speakers (pictured). The wood has swelled slightly in the effected area. -Both of the dust caps on the passive radiators have been pushed in. -One of the radiators has had some repairs made. It looks to have been done well and it seals well. None of the issues have any impact on performance, I just wanted to disclose everything up front. These speakers are hooked up and ready for audition if you are in or around the Tampa area. Looking to get $450. I live in Tampa and would be willing to meet in some of the surrounding areas. I would prefer to sale local, as I have never tried to ship anything like this before, but I would be willing to give it a shot at the buyers expense. I have attached a couple of pictures to this post, but the rest can be seen in my Craigslist post here: Click Me! (Apparently, the other pictures are too big for this site.) Thanks for looking and let me know if you have any questions!
  13. I tbink tbis full set up just got listsd on Agon by someone in Lawrenceville, GA (suburb of Atlanta). Looks like it was an Academy...

    Bunch in Tampa

Seems like a lot of good stuff in the Tampa area lately. Figured I would share! Not affiliated with any of these. KLF 10's for $300 KG 5.5's for $350 Chorus I's for Trade Chorus II's for $800 Forte II's for $500 KG 3.2 and Sub for $75 - I'm actually in contact with this seller trying to get a pic of the problem area mentioned. Hereseys and Marantz Receiver Academy I think Youthman posted this one. KG 5.5's and KVI + JBL Bookshelves for $250
  15. I’m still pretty new at this, so please take that into consideration. [] I recently acquired some Forte II’s to go along with Quartet’s that I am now using in an enhanced stereo mode, and I absolutely love the sound they all make. I got the Quartet’s a couple of months back, which replaced KG 5.2’s, and I was (and continue to be) blown away by the sound these speakers can produce. Granted, they are all Crited up (TI Diaphragms and Xovers) but they produce an awesome sound for a great price and a decent footprint. The Forte II’s (TI Diaphragms on the way) sound very similar, just more pronounced base. From 5 feet away (my listening position) a kick drum seems to vibrate through my chest (in a good way). The footprint gets a little bigger and the price goes up a decent amount if you compare by % between the two. Now, when I went to pick up the Forte II’s this weekend, the owner just happened to have a pair of brand new Cornwall III’s hooked up to a Cary Audio 12 wpc tube amp. (Turns out the guy owns Cary Audio or something along those lines, how about them apples…) Anyway, he was nice enough to give me a quick listen. Playing in a room that was roughly 25ft square with 30ft ceilings (uh yeah, the house was awesome) my jaw hit the floor when I heard and felt Pink Floyd fill such a massive room with ease on less than 12 watts per speaker. I don’t think I have the technical terms down yet to explain how amazing those speakers sounded, but rest assured, they were breathe taking. On the down side, the price is obviously exponentially higher, and the footprint is considerably larger than a Forte II. I have not heard or seen the Chorus line, have not heard the Forte I, nor do I know how the Cornwall III compares to the older versions. So, assuming that cash and space are of no consequence, and the older Cornwalls sound even nearly as good as the Cornwall III, then I would tell you to go that route hands down, no questions asked. If footprint matters and/or you a looking to stay on a budget, you would be very hard pressed to beat the performance of a Quartet. However, the Forte II’s 12” woofer and 15” passive really do make a noticeable difference on the bottom end. With the tweeters and mids being nearly the same between the two, I definitely prefer the overall sound of the Forte II’s. I imagine stepping up to the Chorus line would simply be one step further in the same direction, but again, I can’t speak from experience there. Hope that helps!
  16. Traded! Got some Forte II's local and I am having trouble typing from cloud 9... Once I got them hooked up with my Quartets as surrounds, I was like this [:|] for the first hour, then this [H] for the next two! Man I love how this line sounds!
  17. Huh, I just assumed it was preset from the factory. I have an Enhanced 1 & 2 with the difference being one uses the center. It never occurred to me that I could edit them! To your last point, what this exercise did show me is that I really don't need a sub. I'm sure there will be times when I will miss some things without one, but on the whole, I really like the sound better without one. That isn't a slight in the least on the sub, as it is a beast! It made one of the bookstands rattle so bad one time, I thought I had blown the speaker! Anyway, thanks for the kind words.
  18. Link I actually replied to this one to see if they would be interested in a trade + cash for my Paradigm sub. Haven't heard back, so probably not looking good for me. []
  19. Link I'm no expert, but these look pretty nice.
  20. Traded for Forte II's [] Hi all, I am looking to sell or trade my Paradigm 3200 sub. This is a very nice unit that was purchased open box in late December. Nothing wrong at all and it could still pass for brand new. The reason I am looking to trade it is I have come to really enjoy the enhanced stereo mode on my NAD receiver that plays to both the front and surround speakers. This mode doesn't use the sub at all, so I'm really not using it much. I figured I would get much better use out of improved fronts or surrounds. I am currently running Quartets on the front (with Crites TI tweeters and full crossovers) and stock KG 3.5's in the back. I'm looking to replace the KG 3.5's in the system, preferrably with something from the Quartet, Forte, Chorus family. (I am willing to look at other lines as well.) I am willing to add up to $300 for the right deal. Ideally, I could find a trade locally, but I do have the original box and would be willing to ship if it came down to it. Asking price is $400 for a straight sale. Thanks for looking and let me know if you have any questions. []
  21. emakl a Thanks for the input. I have communicated by email only so far and got weird message to email him tommorow about being able to see them. Something in the wording seemed odd. I'll ksep you posted.
  22. I am going to go by and take a look at them. Anything in particular you guys think I should look for? The guys says the cabs are pretty beat up, but they sound great. Should I try to haggle price? (Price seems pretty decent as is.) Any advice would be very helpful, I'm still very new at all this! []
  23. Therefore, send not to know For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee. I'm thinking a play on this classic verse. John Donne by the way, and yes I had to look that up. At lease I remembered it wasn't Metallica... -For whom the Belles toll -The Belles toll for thee I should email my English teacher(s) and let them know I finally used something from their class in the real world!
  24. Sorry I haven’t responded to my own thread in a few days. My responsibilities keep getting in the way of my free time! Thanks Bill, you are right that it is very hard to tell there is any tilt at all. I don’t know that this solution will work for me as I have bookcases on either side of each speaker. I may just have to go with a stand, but thanks for digging up the pictures! Moray, on the stands, can you recommend any companies/people that produce a stand similar to what you have pictured? I’m having a tough time finding any as I mostly run into monitor/small surround speaker stands when I do searches. I am very interested in the bracing, but again, I’m having trouble finding a thread that is truly “bracing for dummies” either here or on Audio Karma. I saw your recent post where you suggested a couple of options for wood type and thickness to use, but no details on how it is actually done. Just a few questions I have for example: -What secures the braces to the sides of the cabinet? I’m assuming the wood needs to be cut to the near exact length of the inside of the cabinet and use a rubber mallet to hammer it into place with some wood glue on each end? -Should the front/back and side/side braces cross each other and be secured together? It looks like they are on one of your examples. -How many braces need to go in and where should they be placed inside the cabinet? I don’t mind putting some time in to my speakers. My limitations more revolve around my skill set. For example, I don’t have much in the way of tools for wood working. I have a circular saw and a sander, and that’s about it. I have never done much wood work, and what I have done, didn’t really require exact measurements like this project will. For example, I would never attempt to increase the size of the woofer cut out in the cabinet as I do not have a tool capable of making that cut. I am all about tinkering, I just don’t want to do something stupid, like mess up the cabinets. I think you posted in another thread somewhere that some bracing is better than none. Is there a caveman/idiot proof way to brace the cabs with limited tools and woodworking experience? Thanks again for the help and suggestions everyone!
