  1. I run a single passive Cap 2400 with a Behringer EP4000 and it is a fantastic match. Let me tell you the Cap WILL blow you away and I highly recommend it. I run the Behringer MIC 2200 for EQ duties using a Dayton V2 omnimic for frequency measurement (easy to do). I upgraded from a Klipsch KSW 300 so it really isnt fair to make a comparison between the two as the difference is enormous. The Cap gives a 3 dimensional shape to the bass and real feel during movies, stunning. Its an aggressive beast. Ive ordered a second one to complete the look of the front soundstage, not that I need it but I dont mind overkill when it comes to lower frequencies. You can bridge the EP4000 and have plenty of power to run two as the guys will atest on the AVS JTR Captivator thread. Some run their dual Caps using Crown XLS 5000 which reportedly can find the Cap limits at extreme levels. For only around $300-$400 the Behringer is hard to beat as you would have trouble finding the Cap limits whilst not underpowering. The Inuke is also recommended as the DSP is better for EQ but not sure if you could power duals sufficiently? A good question to ask the thread on AVS ARCHAEA is a great source of info for Caps. On page 92 of the JTR Captivator thread he lists the best way to setup the Cap including all cables. I would strongly recommend this as a reference. An inexpensive way to setup that gets the best performance out of the Cap(s). Im not sure the Inuke 6000 can be bridged but otherwise would be another option. FWIW I find the MIC2200 does a great job and is inexpensive for EQ (and a must IMO if you want to see the cap at its best). If you buy dual Passive Caps this is where the savings will be had over the active version but the EP4000 (along with other proamps) has a noisy fan which you will need to modify or run from another room (as I do). The port tune of the 2400 is around 18Hz so technically it wont go as low as a sealed design but Ive never felt like I was missing out on anything. Some would argue that whilst it doesnt measure below this something (big) is still felt. Hope this helps.
  2. Ive managed to test everything except the preamp. I now know that it must be this component causing the issue as using old receiver played fine. power amp with receiver sounded much better and no problems either with Radiohead CD. It is only really noticeable with this music which is annoying as I happen to play it a lot. I bought from a dealer but unless you played the Radiohead music you wouldnt notice a problem (Im sure other music would do it to but havent found it yet). Still under warranty until the end of the year and a pain in the rear to take back and get checked but guess Ill have to. Crackling does happen at lower volumes. I would describe it as just like when the tuning dial on radio not quite on channel and you get a tiny crackle that lets you know its not tuned properly into the station.
  3. A pro amp whilst providing a cheaper solution is not hifi. They are wonderful for raw power (excellent for subwoofer application) but I think youll be making a compromise if you use for other speakers. My Behringer ep4000 is a proamp and does a fantastic job powering the sub. Its when you use the proamp for higher frequency applications where you notice the difference. Apart from the fan noise which is way too loud for me to have the amp in the same room (fan modifications are possible to remedy this) the sound is raw, lacks the detail. If I listen for longer periods my ears start to hurt as sound is not as carressing on my ears! Only way I can describe it. For some people proamps are fine so your ears will tell you if you like it or not.
  4. CECAA850: SuBXeRo: Thoughts?????? I would have had THIS weeks ago. +1 what an absolute monster subwoofer. two of these would rock your teeth out of you head. You're right two of these do rock your teeth out of your head. Highly recommend.
  5. It could cost less than a few grand if you were buy something like Emotiva but I havent heard any of their products myself. Best ask someone who has and read on forums like AVS for feedback or try to get an audition somewhere yourself. Im not overly experienced with other than what Ive got so somebody else may be better to give you advice. An entry level five channel amplifier from a reputable brand would set you back between $1000-$2000. Skys the limit after that e.g Krell, Levinson. Processors are about the same cost for entry level maybe slightly more expensive. Expect to start at around $1500 for a superseded or demo model from a good brand and can get very expensive (Classe ssp-800= $10000). Bare in mind these prices are based on Australian market where I live. Anyway in my case I bought a demo Rotel for $1200 (was $2300 new) and an Elektra power amp for $1500 (was $3500 new) second hand. Both these items were less than four years old. Have a look around and listen too is probably the best advice to give.
  6. J.L. I was also a receiver guy for fifteen years (got the best out of my old Yamaha rxv 992.....) and had read a lot about the Klipsch speakers being so efficient that a power amp was wasted on them. I saw many people remarking about solid state amps not being any good with Klipsch. Couldn't be further from the truth I reckon! Sure a tube amp may be even better (I've never tried this) but I went with a pre amp and power amp combo recently and it was like I had different speakers all over again. I didnt know what I was missing out on until I made the change. I would say that of the overall improvement 30-40% was due to the power amp (Elektra 185w/channel,7 channels) and probably 60-70% due to the preamp (Rotel RSP 1570). Before I made the changes I thought it would be the other way around but I now realise how important the preamp/processor is in the signal chain. Listening to music is now incredible but before I didn't listen to as much as it wasn't as exciting. Movies are also a lot better too but Ive noticed more of a difference with music. If you've got the funds to do it I would highly recommend in my experience. If you dont mind buying second hand you can set yourself up quite nicely but buying new in pre/pro/power world can get expensive. If like me you plan on making one significant spend in the decade its well worth it.
  7. Okay now after a few critical listens the difference is more apparent between these two centre channels. I definitely now prefer the KLF C7 as it has a more effortless way of producing the sound. Its less bright/harsh on your ears than the KV3. Its not a night and day difference but now my ears have adjusted I prefer the more laidback sound of the C7. The Crites tweets have improved the sound as well. The original tweeter looked fine but may not have been 100%. I havent had the chance to push the C7 a bit yet but I think this is where it will really shine as the KV3 screams a bit at higher volume. The silk like sound of the C7 should perform well with increased listening level. The soundstage of the front three is now harmonious thanks for the feedback. Happy now. Two more Crites tweeters for the rears and Im all sorted.
  8. Ive had my KG5.5s for sixteen years, bought them brand new. I was around 24 when I bought them and put them through a fair bit and I reckon they still sound as good today as the day I bought them without once having to get anything repaired. In fact as of last week they sound even better as I put in the Crites titanium tweeters. Very easy to do and stunning results for not much $$$. Highly recommend. I have upgraded a few things around the KG5.5s but theres no way Im ever changing them out! Only thing I might still have to do is get another pair for the rears! I run subs to cover the below 80hz material for movies and music but the KG5.5s are no slouch in that departmemt either.
  9. Crossover looks fine, measured 8ohms at the binding posts with multimeter. Measured tweeter pre change to Crites titaniums, 8ohm also. Only had a bit of a listen this evening. Sounds better but would not say I notice any huge difference between the KLF C7 and the KV3. I still slightly prefer the KV3 but will give the C7 more of a run over the next few days. Certainly a lot more to like now than there was before. If I take woofers out can I check resistance on those too? Crites tweeters have been an awesome upgrade.
  10. Just put the Crites titanium tweeters into my KG5.5's and KV-3 centre. Wow is all I can say! What a great improvement to what I already thought were great sounding speakers anyway. Best upgrade for $30 a speaker Ill ever see.
  11. Have checked wiring nothing wrong there. How do you check ohm? Cosmetically speaker looks fine. Do I need to pull out horn to check ohm with ohmeter? Im going to do this anyway when Crites titaniums arrive. How do I check rest of components? I dont have any room correction built in but I have an omnimic with test signals. Could I do some sweeps to determine if theres any thing wrong?
  12. I have just received a second hand KLF-C7 centre channel and have replaced a KV-3 which has nothing wrong with it but I thought the extra power handling C7 may have been even better. My initial impressions are pretty underwhelming. The KLF-C7 sounds set back and distant, lacks any real spark, sounds thin but there are no noticeable bad sounds its just really subdued. Not what I was expecting after reading a lot of other peoples comments. My KV-3 sounds really alive in comparison and if I cant find anything wrong with the C7 then Ill swap the KV-3 back in. I know its not recommended as a direct match for the KG 5.5 speakers that I own but this is so unmatched at the moment I fear something mustn't be right given its specs. I have Bob Crites titanium tweeters coming and maybe there is something amiss with the C7 tweeter thats in it? The dialogue during movies is quite difficult to hear with the C7, not so with the KV-3. Its like I need to run it +5db or +6db hot compared to 0db for my KV-3 and its still not matching the dynamics. The mains seem like theyve come forward into the room and I can identify when theyre playing during movies but I never could distinguish them before when the KV-3 was sharing the stage. Maybe it is just a mismatch but the weight and size of the C7 says to me its capable of a whole lot more. Any thoughts?
  13. Playing at low volume I still notice crackling. Sounds a bit like record player crackle around vocals in higher notes (still only Radiohead CD's seem to do it). Quite specific. Ive also noticed on my centre channel (from day one, upgraded once. Since including new centre channel, still does it) that during certain movie scenes (pod emerging and emitting first warning call before vapourising people does it most in War of The Worlds) I get the same crackle but never noticed my mains at all doing it for movies. Im used to it and it doesnt do it enough to make me really get the s.... But I would prefer it gone. I will try what youve suggested and see how I go. I still love these speakers!
  14. I need some more feedback guys on the crackling tweeters. Always the same parts of certain songs. For example, the main right channel crackles badly during one song at a certain point the left channel doesnt. Swapping over the speakers and the exact same crackling in the speaker that has been swapped. So both speakers crackle exactly the same way at that point in the song in the right channel. In another song the left crackles a tiny bit and after swapping speakers the same result occurs as the experiment detailed above. I'm looking for suggestions as to why this might be happening. Ive played the same music through two other stereos (not horns) and no problems with crackling at all. I have another old receiver which Im going to swap for the processor to see if that makes any difference. If not then is it possibly the speaker wire which is about thirteen years old. It still is a relatively minor issue as Ive only noticed it happening on Radiohead cd's but I play them a lot. If its the processor is this a common fault? Any further feedback appreciated. Thanks AJ
  15. That is a great tutorial! Im sure I wont be the only one to benefit from this. Thanks a lot for taking the time. AJ
  16. Update: I was just doing some exploring on this forum and found EXACTLY what I was hoping for with regards to the previous post. I started to think that because I'd only noticed some slight crackling on certain Radiohead songs that I'd play the same tracks through my T.V which is totally crap sounding but is in no way connected to my other system (someone may have suggested doing this). Nothing, not one crackle. Damn........ So I thought I'd eliminated the possibility that it was just Radiohead tracks (I cant remember any other CD's making speakers crackle). I then did a bit more searching on this forum for solutions and back in 2011 there is a carbon copy experience from somebody else with............... Radiohead! The strange thing is I find Radiohead CD's to be great recordings but I believe they have a very slight occassional flaw when expressed through the horns especially on Amnesiac. If anyone else has Amnesiac and plays track 4 about 40 seconds in the line "Holy Roman Empire" seems to be where its at its most noticeable. Doesnt stop me enjoying the song but its just noticeable even at low volumes. Interested if anybody else gets the same result (its just the standard CD). Looking forward to the crites arriving anyway!
  17. Good advice. I just swapped out my mains for the rears and this confirmed that its probably not the speakers. I did just recently upgrade components. I am now running a pre amp and a power amp (see my signature for component details) instead of AVR. So far its only noticeable on one CD that I play ( Radiohead Amnesiac mainly Track 4 "you and whose army") but not really on anything else that Ive noticed. At this stage It's not worrying me enough but would like to know how to fix the issue.? I had already been thinking of upgrading the tweeters and this just gave me the reason to do it. I'm sure the benefits will be there anyway (hopefully fixes the slight crackle?). If it is the pre or power amp how easy is it to find or fix?
  18. I know how to solder but have not done much. Is there a certain standard (quality) wire I should be buying? So after crimping which area do you solder? Sorry for the questions for what is probably a straight forward task but I want to make sure I get it right. What is a heat shrink? Thanks
  19. Thanks mate. Just ordered a couple dozen. Do you need a crimping tool? What else could you use (pliars?). I know these aren't top of the range speakers but I absolutely love them. Cant wait to fit the new parts. Cheers
  20. What do they look like? Where do you get these clips from? Cheers AJ
  21. Thanks guys. I've been in touch with Bob Crites and have decided I will "upgrade" all six of my tweeters with the titanium ones anyway. Seems like they give an overall benefit to the sound and haven't read anybody saying they weren't happy post titanium replacement. At $52 per pair sounds like a cheap way to get more life out of some great speakers. Thanks again I'll let you know my thoughts once Ive done the modification......
  22. Hi Ive got a pair of thirteen year old KG 5.5. I still love these speakers but lately Ive noticed that the tweeters in each speaker are starting to crackle a little bit. I think they're telling me they need to be changed. Ive read that the titanium tweeters (crites?) are a good fit for an improvement on the old ones. Is this correct? Will this solve my crackling issue? How easy is it for a novice to perform the changeover? Im sure these questions have been asked before but couldn't find any thread. Thanks in advance. I live in Australia so whats the best place to obtain replacement parts taking into account postage to Australia.
  23. Im also in the process of buying a subwoofer from JTR speakers (I think they may be in Kansas?). It may be possible to send the speaker to Jeff at JTR who can then send it to me with my new Sub. I will look into that option. Is it possible to private message on this forum? Cheers AJ
  24. Would you mind holding it as I try and find out if it is possible to Ship it? Also how much would you be after for the speaker? Thanks AJ
  25. Hey guys Am looking for a Klipsch KLF C-7 centre channel. I live in Australia and was hoping to ship it over to here. Cant find one here so the reason why I'm posting here to buy. Thanks AJ
