  1. "....or maybe you are just running your subs hot and when you turn them off it seems as if the bass is lacking?" This is what I think to be the culprit. I do like my bass and do run hot around +14. I have dual eighteen inch subs which would skew anyone's judgement once turning them off. I think it's possibly just a case of bass addiction here. Definitely no loose panels. I run a short jumper wire from the two red's and two black's for each speaker with a Banana plug connected to the bottom corresponding color with the speaker wire then connecting to corresponding color binding post on amplifier. Red to Red (short jumper wire connects two binding post on speaker) then bottom Red binding post Speaker to Red binding post on Amplifier for corresponding channel. Same for black. Sorry OP didn't mean to hijack thread.
  2. Hmmmm. Sounds like you guys opened up a can of worms for me or I opened them up for myself! I replaced both sets of woofers with Crites woofers and if I was just using the KLF's without a sub I'd feel very lacking in the bass department. I thought it was because my subs made it a night and day difference but sounds like you could be onto something. I'm happy all the same because the subs do nearly all the work but got me thinking. might try my KG 5.5's up front to see if they have any more bass without subs on. I do have a fairly good appetite for bass and maybe the preamp settings causing this? I run large setting and disable sub but not a huge difference to when set to small? I may leave it if the KG 5.5's yield a similar result and try my old receiver which I know was fine.
  3. I cross over KLF-30's at 80Hz and subs at 80Hz also. I really don't know why, perhaps it's because my subs do such a great job but without the subs on, running the KLF's large the bass seems to be lacking. For two twelve inch woofers per speaker there doesn't seem to be much punch. Don't get me wrong I still love them. I don't know about the KLF 20's but 80Hz with sub would be my suggestion.

    KSW-200

I had the KSW 300 which is from the same series but it's 15 inch instead of 12. I tried for parts but they told me discontinued and amp parts not available anymore. I really liked the KSW 300 and the 200 from that period. Served you well too by the sounds of it but parts may be very hard to come by. Plenty of great options nowadays if needing to replace.
  5. Hey Guys Ive got a pair of old Tangent Klipsch 300's which I dragged out tonight. The tweeter in the right speaker doesn't work anymore. I swapped the left tweeter in which yielded the same result. Does this mean I have to replace the crossover? How much would this set me back. Is it difficult to do? Thanks AJ
  6. Hi Keegan A great buy at $30 that's giving them away! I think a T-Amp would do the job nicely you don't need much to power those and should come in about your budget or less.
  7. Yes Orbit shifter is the last step in my sub journey I believe.
  8. JTR Orbit Shifter if the budget suits. Horn loaded and upgrading shouldn't ever be a problem again.
  9. Aaah bloody Ipad went flat as I was about to send message! Another thing Ive noticed is a faint buzzing in the right main, right rear and right rear back. Wasn't there before either. If Im honest I can sit down like tonight and watch a movie without noticing any of the issues with the unit. But they do bother me because they shouldn't be there. If I sell it I will have to disclose these things. Worries me that it just goes back in, they replace something and comes back no better but maybe worse as they didnt know the source of problem. Feels like chasing tail. I will have to think some more about this......
  10. Thanks. I did purchase the two woofers from Bob Crites.
  11. You know this hobby is a funny thing. Almost always an upgrade takes a bit of work to make it just that. I bought these KLF30's not long ago but they are at the moment a step sideways and possibly even a tiny step back. I am yet to buy anything that was an immediate upgrade in my system without a bit of work to make it just that. It's neverending. I do feel however that I have all the right speakers and I'm now just fine tuning to get that last little bit of sweet harmony. The funny thing is before the KLF 30's I had that harmony with my all KG series HT setup. But I always wanted the KLF 30's for years after hearing a lot of good things about them. My system was really singing before but I had to scratch the itch when these came up for a bargain. I have replaced a couple of woofers already, the tweeters (this did provide immediate upgrade so is an exception) and I'm hoping the titanium midrange will do the trick and give that final bit of balance. If it doesn't I can go back to how it was. Maybe the KG's will always match a bit better as that would make sense because the KLF is a different series? I will definitely keep the KLF 30 for two channel either way. At this stage although Ive read much about crossover work being very beneficial I'm hoping to leave it as is. What did you mean by "only available for service not upgrade"? Can you not buy these parts direct? I have sent an email to Klipsch support enquiring about price and how to get them. I live in Australia so postage is a killer. Are you referring to better diaphragms for the 12inch driver/woofer or does the driver mean something else? I didnt see a response to how easy is it to change the stock midrange over to the titanium? Thanks.
  12. Thanks Gary, I still only pickup problems on the Radiohead CD's (on three of them). I've decided that I'll be chasing my tail if I take it back again only to find they couldn't fix it. So unless I notice anything with other music I will put up with it. I did give them the CD to play with the unit but on picking it up from the technicians no one could tell me if they noticed it. I may make a phone call to see if they can confirm whether there was anything unusual. I now need to move on and enjoy what Ive got rather than letting a few minor nuisances spoil the rest of the ride. Thanks for all the advice.
  13. Im looking at replacing the midrange in my KLF 30's. Is the Klipsch titanium midrange suitable for this model? I have changed the tweeters to Crites titanium tweeters is the midrange as easy to change? How do I order the parts? Thanks. AJ
  14. Update. Took the unit back and they had it for five weeks! Apparently got put on a shelf and forgotten about despite my regular calls. Frustrating. As far as the crackling goes no change. Still just as bad. They put a new DSP in the unit but wish I never took it back as Im now wondering if it sounds as good as it used to. Scratched volume knob to add to everything. Sound like a whingeing perfectionist but really Im not. Not sure whether to take it back and say not happy at all. I really liked the sound of this preamp but would be lucky to replace this unit through dealer as they no longer have it on sale. Has a further two years warranty. Any suggestions?
  15. I was recently at the same fork in the road your at now. Separates or new receiver? You will get many debates on this topic. I will just tell you my experience and it is right for me but someone else will have an opposing and probably not incorrect view. I went for separates after having an 80 watt per channel (5 channels) receiver for many years which gave me great pleasure and owed me nothing. I ran Klipsch KG5.5 as mains in a HT setup. I bought a seven channel power amp (185 watts/channel) cost $1500 used. At the same time I purchased a preamp ( $1200 demo three year warranty) and the difference in sound was amazing. Not saying I couldn't achieve the same result with a new receiver as I didnt audition any. My old receiver used as a preamp with the poweramp does also sound a lot better as I tested for interest. I then happened upon a set of KLF30 speakers which Ive replaced a couple of split woofers and fitted Crites titanium tweeters to. My original KG5.5's are now rears. Very very impressive speakers the KLF 30's. No need to change anything for a long time if ever in the speaker dept. In answer to your question it will possibly cost a bit more to go the separates path but the difference for me is substantial. My speakers no longer yell at me when loud with increased detail, imaging, and clarity. Not sure if the difference between 90 and 140 watts will give any sort of discernible difference but the brand you choose probably will.
  16. Yes no music playing. As soon as I plug in to the preamplifier the buzz starts. Turning up volume doesn't make it hum any louder? It looks like the centre is also doing it. Never did before but I just got the unit back from the dealer after trying to rectify a minor issue. They upgraded the firmware and replaced the DSP. Initial problem still there which was minor and willing to accept. Looks like they created another one. This is the frustrating side of this hobby.......
  17. I just bought a pair of used KLF-30 which are great. Tonight I noticed for the first time there is a slight buzz/hum coming through the midrange on both sides equally. What could be the cause of this? The tweeters are fine no sound coming through those. My previous speakers in this position were KG 5.5s and never noticed any hum at all although there only two way (no midrange). Im using exactly the same gear only the speakers have changed. I also used short pieces of speaker cable as jumpers to connect the two sets of binding posts on each speaker (16gauge wire used for this). Any feedback would be helpful on this.
  18. A bit out of your price estimate and if your not into DIY then the JTR Orbit Shifter (horn loaded) could be an option but an expensive one. I see they are on sale at the moment for $1699 but then youd need to find an amp to go with it as its passive. Needs to be powerful (up to 4000 watts) so a pro amp fitting the bill would add at least $600 to that. I cant say it would pass WAF but performance would not be an issue ever again.
  19. Ive just bought a pair of used KLF 30. There are two sets of red and black inputs for the speaker wire. My old KG 5.5's only had one black and red input (because they are two way?). Is the reason for the two sets on the KLF30 for biamping? Whats the best way for me to connect to both these sets of terminals using just one speaker cable? Do I only need to connect to the bottom set and leave the top one without? Would this mean just the lower frequencies will be heard? Jumpers between two sets? A bit confused as first set of speakers Ive had with two sets of (red and black) cable connections.
  20. On page 777 of the "klipsch owner thread" on the AVS forum there is a link by popalock Under Crest Factor heading (post 23293) to a 60minute video which among other interesting things discusses room treatments and the overuse of room correction tools (Audyssey included) and physical treatments. Flies in the face of popular belief but makes a bit of sense to me. If you can find it it may answer some of your questions about your own setup.
  21. Were you impressed with the KLF-30's? How would they compare to the RF-7's you have (a large floorstander also right?)?
  22. Im wondering how much difference there will be between the KLF 30 and the Klipsch KG 5.5? Given that I crossover at 80Hz and use subwoofer for lower frequencies will I be really needing these gigantic towers in my living room? Im looking to buy a pair of KLF 30's and move my KG 5.5's to rear in my home theatre setup. Both the KLF 30's have one cracked woofer each and will need to be replaced. Is it best order through Klipsch the replacement? I will also be getting a couple of Crites titanium tweeters will I need to get one or two for each KLF 30? If anyone has compared the 5.5's and the KLF 30's in a home theatre setup would what I am planning to do be much of an upgrade? I also listen with sub involved for two channel listening (80Hz crossover also). They are asking $500 for the pair. Considering damage this could be optimistic dont you think?
  23. I used Kv-3 for more than ten years. An outstanding centre. Tried a KG 4.2 as a centre but didnt sound as good (now my rears). I now have a KLF C7 which is probably a little bit better but it depends on what your after. The KLF C7 is more laid back and handles louder volumes a bit better I think but I run it with large floorstanding KG 5.5s which can go loud and clear (all have been recently modified with Crites Titanium tweeters). If you go down the Crites road I found updating my whole speaker system was a necessary step for home theatre synergy (this means seven speakers in my case) but a great upgrade. One pair sets you back about $52 for memory.
  24. A great moment in time for you whichever way you go. Ive got the KG 5.5s as my mains with Crites titanium tweeters. I see you have owned these how do you find the newer Klipsch speakers compared to the older models listed as gone but not forgotten in your signature?
  25. My son wants to see Pacific Rim at the movies (we dont go to the movies anymore I cant adjust to the experience) but I selfishly told him its not out (to hire) yet. I agree looks like a good one.
