  1. Al set my xovers for 6db of attenuation on the mid. Bobs are set at -9. It seems as though everyone is doing way more than that. I will spend the long weekend experimenting.

The Selenium D405 has a sensitivity of 110dB (on a horn, but I don't know which one). So -9dB seems appropriate.

I guess you have CornScala-walls? The -6dB isn't right, unless of course it sounds right and you like it. How long ago did you purchase these - do they use the new 3619-ET? If so, the red wire plugs into the input tap labeled -0 and the other wire should be plugged into the tap output labeled 9.

These are brand new, just received them Monday. I haven't even installed them yet, hopefully tonight. Yes, they are cornscala-walls.

  2. The SS amps and avr's can deliver excellent performance

Some SS amps yes. AVR? Depends on what you listen for. These machines are fine for dinosaur stomps, car crashes and explosions. Music? Not so much........

We will just have to agree to disagree.

  3. Blind listening test have proven that high dollar amps don't sound different even to audiophiles on more than one occassion

This is a slippery slope and one fraught with misery. It is the long term enjoyment of a component that means the most to me. Not the frustration and annoyance of listening to 2 minute snippets of a song and switching cables back and forth, a sure recipe for disaster.

That said, I just replaced a 150 watt tube amplifier with a 40 watt tube amplifier and the difference (and improvement) was noticeable within the first few minutes of listening.

Amplifiers sound different from one another. Period. I'm not saying that a ten thousand dollar amplifier will beat a two thousand dollar amplifier in every instance. That is for the buyer to decide. But even if they sound similar, one of them is going to sound better.

I am not throwing rocks or pointing fingers here. But I have found that most of the time people who make the above quoted claim, either haven't spent any time with the good stuff, or can't (or chose not to) afford it. It's ok. I have heard equipment that I know sounds better than what I have, but I don't stick my head in the sand and deny it.

  4. To each his own I say.

There are differences in the sound of speaker cables. They do NOT all sound alike. I did not, nor will I spend thousands of dollars on cables. But I didn't get them from Home Depot either. Let your ears be the deciding factor. If you can't hear it, don't spend it.

  6. I would suggest adding a vinyl front end to your system. You would reap the benefit of better sound.

    Pop, Crackle, Hiss! LMBO

Childish response.... I get so sick of the digital folks that have sunk a fortune in time in money on the digital front comparing the performance to a LP system that was/is totally half assed...then you have the LP freaks that spend a fortune in time and money then compare it to a digital rig that consist of a bargain bin CD player... All formats can and are good in there own ways...LP rig setup properly happen to be the most "musical systems" on earth always have been and most likely always will be.... snap, crackle, pop my ***

Childish response.... Pot calling the kettle black Ehhh???

It's hard to imagine anyone not preferring the sound of a good vinyl rig in a good system, even when compared to a very high end seedee player. I think that ship has sailed.

Now you may prefer digital over vinyl for a host of other reasons, but if you are hanging your hat on the issue of sonics, you are just plain fooling yourself.

I wouldn't expect you to understand. But it beats the pants off digital.

Oh You ARE Right! I don't understand. I have a Micro Seiki DD-35 with Grado Black cartridge and vinyl does suck!!

Yeah, there is your problem. Not surprised, actually.

  8. Main reason is to tap what remains the largest amount of quality music available. And cheap.

I've no time for those who talk about hiss while listening to their system with the AC or heat on, a fire in the fireplace (crackle, pop!)or rain, or car radios...or anything. It's about the music. The bulk of quality recordings are unavailable to those who ignore the first century of recording and only listen to the last 30 years.

I have to assume those who have a bias for one medium or the other listen to the media, not the music...not that there is anything wrong with that.

The 24/192 X 4 recording I made of the Asylum Street Spankers remains the most immersive and realistic recording I've ever heard. However, if I had to choose between it and the acoustic 78 recording I have of 22 year old Duke Ellington playing "The Mooche," I'd ditch it in a heartbeat.

It's about the music, and most of it is analog, and most of that is phonograph recordings.

All that said, I am perfectly at peace with and enjoy the company of those who listen to equipment, capacitors, interconnects, tubes, etc. But for me, it's about the music.

I DO think that when we post our thoughts we should make some attempt to make it clear where our biases are.

My wife and i share a favorite recording. George Gershwin at the piano with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, "Rhapsody in Blue" original 1924 acoustic version. Worn to hell when I got it, sand and grit in the grooves. Well cleaned, I'd say the S/N is maybe 20db. But, Lord, what a performance! I just imagine I am outside Carnegie hall with rain pouring down and can't afford a ticket due to the depression. I'm forced to stand near a stage door an listen to this historic performance through a crack in the door. And I am in heaven!

Wanna test whether you're an equipment head or a music head? Try this. Note the "download" is side B in both cases...I am going to let them know. However, the player version above it is correct. The clarinet intro is one of the finest pieces of clarinet work PERIOD. Of course, while they had a cleaner. less worn disc, this doesn't sound as good as playing the REAL disc. Nonetheless, it's incredible music you cannot get closer to than playing back on your own turntable. If all you hear is limited bandwidth and noise, you are an equipment head. I salute you! Enjoy! Otherwise, hie thee to thy supplier of ye old turntables and get thee one.

    Well said.
