  1. Don't Use glue on the dog box cover instead use automotive foam weather tape its self adhesive on one side and available in several thickneses

Use new driver gaskets if required

Never use any damping in the dog box

You can use wood glue for joins as required

You can use a clamping device to stop bass driver resonance vibrations

Budget allowing my recommendation is to replace the crossovers with modern alternatives

Brace the side walls with extra Ply or MDF to add thickness OR add external braces but I prefer x 4 per cabinet (2 per side) see link http://www.klipschupgrades.com/lascalabraces.shtml

  2. Those autoformers are sold by a gentleman called Werner Jagusch. They can be either purchased off ebay, or from him directly (which might influence the price slightly). I use the same units (with 1.5db steps) and have asked him also for bass inductors. To my ears his units sound more open than either the Klipsch autoformer or solen air core inductors. I am a very satisfied customer indeed.

Thanks by the way for elaborating a bit on the Jentzen wax coils - it was a useful description.

    Wolfram

It was my pleasure Wolfram - glad to help another enthusiast

  3. Thanks Full Range,

Its all German to me. :)

Here is a copy and paste of the English version for your good self and other members

( please note my autoformers are @ 1 dB increments )

A pair of autotransformers to allow the perfect adjustment of volume improvement of phase for mid-range and high-range hornspeakers.

The sound volume can be adjusted in 14 steps, each at 1,5 dB per step. Other extraction stages are available on request.

Very high quality versions wound on Double Core.

This is for all horn enthusiasts who want to get the absolute optimum out of their speakers without using resistors and volume controls.

The old horn specialists such all use autotransformers.

Klipsch corner-horn without autotransformers is unthinkable.

Unfortunately, autotransformers have been largely forgotten.

However, they have great advantages compared to conventional crossovers not only when looked at from a technical point of view (see electrical diagram) but even more so when comparing the sound quality, which improves immensely.

Horn and woofer build a homogeneous entity, becoming more coaxial, they perform together and not separately.

The aficionado/ adept will know exactly what I mean.

The old master Shindo employs autotransformers and paper in oil capacitors. He knows why!

+++++++++++++++A few explanatory notes about the autotransformer (AT)+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The AT is used for level adaption on multiple-combination loudspeakers.

The operating mode is similar to that of a power transformer, for example from 230 to 115 volt, it thus forms a voltage divider for AC voltage. The advantage of an AT however compared to alternating current voltage dividers lies in its much lower internal resistance, below 0.1 Ohm.

Thus the electrical damping of the connected loudspeaker is considerably higher. The power factor (BxL) also takes on considerably higher data. This is a very important factor when operating horn-drivers, as the BL-faktors have a great influence on the characteristic curve.

  4. Full Range,

Just curious, what transformer did you use that has 1dB steps?

At first I used the original Klipsch type Autoformers

However as I was in tweaking mode I was kindly offered by another member to buy a set of them he had in storage

He said he purchased them from a guy in Germany that makes some very nice double c-core autoformers

  5. Ok years ago I met Paul W. Klipsch at United Audio in Libertyville, Illinois where he signed a brochure and gave me his business card.

Now listed on Ebay item number 281619742991

     http://www.ebay.com/itm/281619742991?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

I do not know what anyone would be willing to pay for this so I started the auction at .99 cents.

I would bid but the cost to ship internationally is just way to expensive for what is essentially a letter

  6. However, the pursuit of audio "perfection" mostly involves a long list of subtle improvements that add up to monumental improvement.

Now that is something I'd agree with. I have just changed the coil placed before the woofer (from Solen to a coil would by the gentleman who also did "my" autoformers) and the change is not dramatic (some more clarity), but to my ears worth the extra money spent. I shall give those wax coils a try - but it takes about two weeks for them to be manufactured and delivered.

    Wolfram

I also had to place a special order from Jentzen for the correct Mh value coils to be custom made

    Took about 4,weeks from memory

  7. Use Google books, and read about how coils used to be made and why. Most modern coils skirt the wax because it's a pain to work with and adds cost. Most coils aren't dipped in anything, which is imbecilic. This relates to electrical and mechanical integrity. The audible difference is very subtle, hardly worth getting excited about. However, the pursuit of audio "perfection" mostly involves a long list of subtle improvements that add up to monumental improvement. Some things are less subtle than others. With that said, I'm working with Universal Transformer to have all of my parts impregnated with wax. Next in line is the 2.5mH coil, which is also getting the same wire/core/frame upgrade as the autotransformer I use.

That's pretty close to the series of events I went through Dean

A few little improvements with judicious parts selection added up to a monumental improvement

  8. Looking nice - Can you perhaps elaborate a bit more if you have found the move away from the Solen coils to the Jentzen wax inductors worth the investment?

    Thanks - Wolfram

There is nothing standard on my Klipsch La Scalas so I had to do a little bit of experimenting

You need to look at the design as a whole and not it's individual parts

Because the flat coils were incorporated last I can inform you that the difference between the Twisted Solen and the Jentzen Flat wax coils is subtle - but to my ears noticeable

Please don't underestimate the fantastic performance of the Solens

However the main difference is the faint ripple edge of the crossover point of mid and bass disappears with the Jentzen flat wax coils

One other area of difference after installing the Jentzen Flat wax coils is in the attack of the music. Some tracks give me tingles up my spine - I have some very demanding test tracks

For music with soft passages I can't tell the difference between the two

    Hope my explanation helps

  9. Congrats from one LS owner the another

You can pimp them up and add a bass bin just like mine if the desire is there

Upgrades are only limited by your desire and imagination

I myself don't like doing things by halvesattachicon.gifimage.jpg

Another good reason to return to Brisbane.

Were you able to measure the results of your mods, the work looks very impressive.

    Are the crossovers DIY??

    Thanks for the compliment Bubo

If you come back to Brisbane look me up and if the stars align you can come over for a listen

All the mods are tuned by ear. However I would dearly love to get some measurements with high quality equipment for accurate readings

Bubo yes the crossovers are DIY here is the thread to see the build from start to finish - https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/149952-a-crossover-design-on-single-exposed-board/

  10. Location: Brisbane Australia

    Item - ALK Design AP12-600 + AP15-6000 Crossover Networks - Klipsch

Item condition: As New ( only used for approx one month )

    Price: $550 AU

As the U.S. dollar is up against the AU dollar anyone interested should do a currency conversion to check a final cost

Reason for selling: No longer needed

Payment Methods: Paypal + % is the easiest method for international

Postage at buyers expense but I am willing to cover half the postage cost so the buyer won't be disadvantaged and will probably be close to the same price as local postage

No need to introduce these ALK designed and made crossover networks.

If you are into Klipsch sound, this is the best upgrade money can buy.

Can be used for for most 3-way Heritage Klipsch speakers Or a variety of other horn based speaker projects

Perfect for Cornscala builders and standard La Scala

Bought these for temporary use of 1 month while building custom crossovers

    Lots of info on-line:
