  1. Hi Norton The Cornwalls are a fine speaker. No worries. If you plan on going the Cornscala route, you already have the Cormwall box to work with. You can start with a horn from Fastlane Audio, although a bit of surgery will be required, followed by a new crossover from either ALK Engineering or from Dean Wescott ( easy to do).
  2. What did you do with your ALK's? Are they the Cornscala-wall's? . I sold then to finance the SuperX
  3. Schu I just drilled a hole at the bottom of the cabinet that would be large enough
  4. Mark It started life as a Cornscala B from Crites. I painted the front black and used polyurethane for the sides. Changes made in order: 1) Added dampening material inside the cabinet 2) Dampened the horn with Dynamat 3) Replaced the Xover with ALK Eng Universal 4) Replaced the selenium D405 with B&C DCM50 5) Replaced all internal wiring with Supra hookup wire 6) Replaced ALK Xover with Dean's SuperX and installed it outside the cabinet 7) Added spikes to bottom of cabinet
  5. Had it for some time now. Its just that I have finally been able to take some pictures
  6. Thanks Shakey It was a bit of a journey to get it to where I want it to be. Dont understand the dislike for the the D2380 horn. Granted,I don't have anything to compare it to but it sounds pretty damn good as it is and I'm in no rush to replace it
  7. Replaced ALK's Universal with Dean's SuperX. Alk's xover is no slouch and at $320 a nice upgrade from Crite's but the SuperX is in another league.True it cost twice as much but parts are not parts. Dean uses Clarity and Mundorf and the extra cost shows. Selenium D405 replaced with B&C DCM50 Nice work, Dean
  8. Mike I like the idea of extra bracing. Even my Crites Cornscala box could use some. Once you're all done, and especially if they're on carpet, try speaker spikes under all 4 corners of each speakers
  9. Sorry about that Those xovers are going to make your speakers sound fantastic.....eventually
  10. Still awaiting... you sir, are the most patient man in the world. I submitted my order at the very end of October with a known wait time of 8 weeks. Hadn't heard from Dean in a while so I did send a couple of annoying emails checking status. He got back to me a few days ago - he re-injured his back and has been moving slow as a result. No bother to me, as long as communication lines stay open. That's interesting Didnt hear from Dean in a while? Where did I read this before? Anyway.... I've owned the ALK Universal and now Deans Super X. No comparison. Spending more on parts DO make difference. D To Schu: I am the most patient man in the world
  11. Guys If you've always want to try tubes but were afraid the "high maintenance" associated with tube gear, Quicksilvers have always been know to be well designed, bullet proof with little if any maintenance. Biasing is a cinch. http://www.quicksilveraudio.com/products/MidMonoManual.pdf
  12. Well Shakey, it looks like you're moving on. Shakey is the one that piqued my interest in Cornscalas and I thank him for it. Maybe if you switched out that Selenium midrange driver for something like the B&C DCM50 or even the BMS 4592 driver, you may be singing a different tune Thats one of the things I love about these Cornscalas. They are so easy to work and improve upon. Take care, Shakey
  13. Photos of one of the two networks. The other looks just like it
  14. Few months old. Identical to the photo on ALK webpage. $300 shipped in Cont.US. Al K makes them to order so if you're contemplating new, be prepared to wait. Moving up the line.
  15. I have a pair of Selenium D405 drivers that were removed from my Crites Cornscalas. They were purchased new on 12/2013. One driver has a scuff mark which has no impact on sound. http://www.jblpro.com/ProductAttachments/D405_SpecSheet.pdf $200 a pair plus ship and paypal
  16. Hello gentlemen Looking to move up from the Seleniium D405 in my Crites Cornscalas. Has anyone compared it to the B-C D85, B-C DE750TN, B-C DCM50, Eminence PSD3006 or anything else that I should consider? Horn is a JBL clone https://www.jblpro.com/pages/pub/components/2380a.pdf Xover is ALKs Universal Thanks in advance
  17. Looking into these options myself. I dont think the granite will accomplish what you're trying to do which is drain vibration away from the speaker cabinet. I think you would still be better off with spikes or the Auralex. You also may want to consider products from Herbie's Audio Labs especially the " Big Fat Gliders" http://herbiesaudiolab.net/spkrfeet.htm
  18. Asking $125 plus ship and paypal. $250 new. Few months old Single wire binding posts. http://www.critesspeakers.com/new-style-crossover.html
  19. Followup: First off, I want to make sure that my intention was never to disparage Crite's Cornscala but to just help solve a problem I was having. So, Im happy to report that the midrange edginess I initially reported has smoothed out. I know that concept of "break in" is not well accepted by Bob Crite's and others here but I have no other explanation and, no, its not that my ears are getting used to the sound . Several "golden eared" buddies have also heard the improvement. Can Bob's design be improved upon? Of course, but I can live with the stock form until then. Happy listening!
  20. A little background. I was always interested in horn designs and when a pair of Cornwalls came up locally I jumped at the chance. I was so enamored by the sound of them I put up my Magnepan 3.6s for sale. Never did I find the Cornwalls "hot". Cant leave well enough alone, I stumbled upon the Cornscalas, especially Bob Crites design. Figuring they would build on the strengths of the Cornwalls I ordered a pair. Thats what I was expecting and maybe naively so. What I did get was a well made box and good drivers. His crossover needs a bit of work IMHO.Possibly a design like ALK's universal xover where the tweeter and midrange levels can be adjusted to taste and room considerations. Would I discourage someone from buying Crites's Cornscala? Absolutely not! But not with some caveats. Im currently talking with Dean WEScott to get things sorted.
