whew... finally rained. Was 105` ... now 85`. I can live with that. We didn't get blasted. Some winds and a little wet. But it cooled thing down.

I get really tired of hearing fans running. White noise can be soothing, to a certain extent.  I prefer to not be subject to it, thank you.

    I have a question

these R15M specs say  to 80hz with and "extension" to 50hz... where should the sub Xover be set? I set it to the lower end as I assume these speakers are better than the sub thru their freq range...

Rain missed us so far.  I saw what looked like a small micro-burst full of lightning down your direction.  Wish some of it had made it this far.  We had to settle for rumbling and a little lightning.

Monsoon season must be almost all the rain you get.  Your annual rainfall is 14 inches.  Ours is 47 inches.  It's not unusual for us to get 10 inches over the course of a few days or a week from time-to-time.  We got around 45 inches from Hurricane Harvey, alone, last year.  That was pretty exceptional.

I like Arizona, including its deserts.  The northeastern part is full of pine forest.  I wouldn't live there because it's not "home" to me, but I do like the state.  The Pinetop area is nice.  Highway 89A is real nice where it cuts through the northern tip of Grand Canyon National Park.  Then, there are places like Kayenta, which leave me wondering how people live there.  It's a real town, but wow, how it's in the middle of nowhere.  Good memories of various road trips.

Those are nice areas, I prefer the desert personally (or I wouldn't be here).  You're correct, the monsoons are very important for the water and the good the water does.  It's Oasis like here at the moment.  (South of Tucson, 40 minutes from the Border).

They always talk about a "dry heat," but having been to Arizona several times, I don't see it as an improvement over our Gulf Coast weather.  We get bountiful rain and plenty of clouds to help us through the summers.  Arizona is just sunny and hot.

You must have missed Monsoon season which is what we are in the midst of now. Arizona is amazingly green, the desert plants are blooming and even the animals are enjoying the difference. Yep its hot, and usually dry.  Nebraska is much more unpleasant when it is 90 than Arizona is when its 105.  I like the Gulf area also, but I love the desert.  Good thing we aren't all trying to live in the same place.

That is insane.   If you heard it once you would more than likely never hear the same again.

I did hear it on a couple of occasions-it was as amazing to see as it was to hear.  I remember seeing them working on it right up to the beginning of the concert. The Dead always were (and still are IMHO ahead of the curve when it comes to presenting great sound to an audience.

(I also had three at one time)

Same here, but my three are going to my daughter and son-in-law this month, along with all the other stuff for a good intro to music better than they are used to hearing.  They finally figured it out.

  6. Either are great and I've owned both though not at the same time. Have new Forte III's and don't find the tweeter objectionable at all-though have a friend who did and removed the upgrade from his Forte II's as well.  I think it depends upon how much bass you have/need/want (subs aside).  Chorus beats Forte in that area, but I'm finding with proper placement which has taken some experimentation that the Forte III has enough for me-but i'm sub adverse if I can help it-mostly for esthetic reasons. You are fortunate to have a way to try them out in a dealership, I was fortunate to listen in a fellow forum members home.  When you go to the dealer, take some music that you like and are familiar with-I find that really helps.

  7. Forgive me as I didn't read each previous post, but it's been clear to me for a while that something is wrong with the design of the shipping containers.  In the past two months I have seen two sets of Cornwalls, and one set of Forte's for sale on CL in Arizona with similar damage.  Fortunately mine were delivered "freight" came on pallets with no damage whatever.  Still, changes need to be made at the Factory-this is really not good and doesn't speak well for the brand. Hate to say that with my 50 year allegiance to Klipsch, but this needs someone's attention.

There was a just audible difference between Class A and Class AB on my Yamaha CA-800.

My experience with the Yamaha CA-800 is exactly like yours.  I do like its sound however and like listening to it from time to time.  I'm anxious to try it with my Forte III's which are due to arrive on Tuesday (and all in one piece I hope). I think most pieces of equipment have "a sound of their own" and that make all of this more interesting. The SX-1250 definitely has a sound of its own.  I am less certain that my new Outlaw has a distinctive sound that I can identify-though I like it as well.  Kind of like kids, I love them all.

I'm looking at some of the equipment you have listed such as the sx-1250 and Yamaha... with tubes you will likely not have quite the strength of low end that you have with those SS units.  For example, I love my VRD's and top to bottom they beat everything I've heard SS or tubes without spending many more thousands of dollars.  They don't "slam" on the low end though like the Pioneer but where most of the music is the sound is glorious with the VRD's!   The Yamaha in class A mode might come a bit close (I'm thinking of the CA-2010... I don't have the CA-800).  If the Yamaha in class A sounds better than your tube amp then you got the wrong tube amp imho.  I'm thinking of moving my SX-1250 to my modified La Scalas temporarily but I've been slow due to the 2 flights of stairs and multiple doors I'll be facing.  It would be fun to compare in my main setup though!  Buying used for later resale is a good idea to start but don't waste your time with cheap toy tubes.  You won't really learn anything that way.

Thanks, great to hear from someone with some similar equipment. The 1250 is really great-as is the CA-800 in class A. Different experiences, but both very good. I'm actually going to have two different systems going.  One will be in a smaller room and mostly for Vinyl which is where I am envisioning the tubes living. Thanks for the info.

What you are considering is a push pull tube amplifier and yes many quality SS amplifiers can and do sound much like a push pull tube amplifier. Where you get a much different sound is with a single ended triode tube amplifier. The difference is the curves of the active device, tube or transistor. Most all transistors have curves that are very similar to a pentode tube and a pentode tube is most always used in a push pull tube amplifier. Hench the similar sound in push pull technology. Pentode tube curves go horizontal very quickly whereas triode tube curves go vertical and can actually curve vertical going the opposite direction. Generally you can get a better deal in a push pull tube amplifier then what a quality SS amplifier cost with the comparable sound which makes them a good deal for outstanding sound. To really experience tube sound you need to hear a single ended triode tube amplifier, SET tube amplifier. I waited till I was in my 60's to try tubes and I am very much glad I finally did.

    Very good info.  Thanks!

Hi @dbomberger ... yes; "had to try tubes" also. Got a $1000 Bob Latino VTA--70 amp, and yes ... it does sound nice.  Tried in in my "stereo room" (with Forte's) and even spend another $500 upgrading my pre-amp.  OK; nice ... but not any better than my old Marantz 1060 I had it hooked up before.  Know I'll catch "hell" from the tube guys for this comment :D Hey; for $200-300 try it. :D

    Cheers, Emile

Kind of my fear, but I guess I'm in the mood to experiment.

Kinda old but you said few hundred bucks. I do not think I would pay much more than $200 and would have to think real hard if the price is $300 considering it may need the power supply caps replaced. If you can replace them yourself it would make it more desirable for say $300 but if you cannot I would probably let it pass at $300. For $200 definitely go for it if you like the sound.

  13. Jeff Matthews,  "Deaf Warmed Over" -now that's funny!  Made my afternoon-although the bar is relatively low having had my big toenail removed this morning. But as Kurt Vonnegut would say, "So it goes."

  14. At this point in my life (I'm safely into geezerhood), I have never heard tubes except in a high end audio store. I've decided that since I have had Klipsch since the 70's I ought to at least listen to them with tubes.  I've thought about the new McIntosh integrated amp which did sound nice in the showroom, but I'm not  yet convinced how if I want to.  I came across a Jolida JD102B and am scheduled to audition it Tuesday afternoon.  I know this isn't top of the line, but I sense I can own it for a few hundred bucks, so I'm considering it-assuming I like the sound I hear.  It's 15 years old, has had one set of tubes replaced but is promised to be in very good cosmetic shape and still sounds "great" according to the person  selling it. What would a fair estimate of value be for something like this?  I assume I might need to replace tubes soon, etc.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.  I'm not in a hurry to do this, but have been looking.  Would I be better off to experience one of the other lower end offerings as opposed to something 15 years old?

    Thanks

I had to make the exact same decision this week. RF7II or Forteiii....I don't like the black front of the RF7iii so didn't consider them. I have auditioned RF7ii and they sound great but I still went ahead and ordered the Forteiii without auditioning them. There's so much positive reviews of both I figured I'll go for the looks I prefer in 2Ch audio setup. I might still get a pair of RF7II because I know how great they sound & for the price you can get them for right now. Sounds like you are leaning towards Forteiii so I would say go for it!

How do you like the Forte III's not that you've had them a while?  Mine are on order and I'm getting anxious.

    Thanks

Does this apply to the Garage Sale section?

That will differ by state as well. In Arizona, used items are considered to have been taxed once and thus not subject to further tax (I don't know if this applies to vehicles or other classes of merchandise though).  In other states it doesn't matter-only that it is a sale. (I'm neither an accountant or a lawyer by the way).

Here's a workaround, until I have a chance to code in some more search radius options. Let's say you do a search within 20 miles. On the results page, look at your browser address bar. You'll notice:

    &r=20

    Change that to:

    &r=600

if you want to expand the search to 600 mile radius, and hit enter.

Cool.  Much appreciated!  Works like a charm.  Thanks!

  18. A wider search range would really benefit someone like myself who spent a month trying to find Forte III's to listen to, none in stores in Arizona or Nebraska (save one set of Heresies).  I'd be willing to drive 500-600 miles or more depending on what I am looking for. I did find a helpful Forum member who auditioned the Fortes for me and now have them on order. As the dealerships get filled in maybe the range could be reduced but for now it would be great.
