  1. These look to have either the SL3000 or the updated RDO-198s in them. These are amazing speakers. Good luck with the sale!
  2. I just parted with me recapped 1250. It was beautiful and very powerful. But even after the recap I couldn't fall in love with it. It had a warm and beautiful midrange but the imaging wasn't there and it felt rolled off on the top end. This was even after the recap. I actually preferred my NADs (7240PE and 7100 Monitor) to the Pioneer - they seemed to have better bass control and higher reaches. I wanted to love the 1250 but couldn't. Now the exception here is the phono - I found the phono on the Pioneer to be excellent. I don't know if it's my turntable or the amp but I'm not loving phono as much through my 7100.....
  3. Hard to say what the difference is. I had them all packed in my small living room so a lot of the differences from speaker to speaker was due to room acoustics and placement. Perhaps there was a little more bass in the pair with the 5" tubes. I couldn't see any difference in treble or horn output. Imaging was excellent.
  4. Update: Both pairs of these CF4s were made in late 1994, but they have different length tubes at the bottom - the pair made on day 302 has 5" tubes, the other pair 2.5". Both pairs otherwise sound the same and look the same. From what I've researched the 2.5" tubes denote Series 2, so despite what I was told when I bought them, at least one of these pairs is Series 2. I've also read that the horns in Series 1 speakers were grey, and the horns in both pairs of my CF4s are black. So I have a conundrum. I have one set with 2.5" tubes made earlier than a set with 5" tubes. Otherwise they look and sound the same. I guess it's a nice problem to have but I do wish I knew what the story was here....
  5. Update. I measured the port tubes yesterday and they are 2.5", not 5". I guess this makes this pair series 2 and not 1? Strange because my other pair has te 5" tubes and I think they were made almost the same day in 1994..... When I bought these I was assured they were all Series 1. Caveat Emptor I guess. In any case I cannot market these as series 1 anymore.
  6. Try this one. $349 direct from HK and free shipping: http://www.harmankardon.com/estore/hk/us/products/HK-3390/HK%203390_HK_US Convince him that he should stay away from surround for music! Nice two channel receiver would be better. Frank Hey, that looks like a great choice for the money. I like this line of Harmans. I have an older (but pretty similar) 3380 which I love. Good honest sound. I haven't A/B'd it against any of my NAD amps but it does the job. And it's versatile with vintage gear like those JBLs.
  7. Thanks! Bumping here. BTW - I'm surprised that there are 3 sets of CF-4s for sale on the site right now. But I guess good things come in threes!
  8. That Yamaha would be a great buy. But if you may need a separate phono preamp to hook up the turntable.
  9. For sale one pair of Klipsch CF-4 Series 1 in cherry. In very good shape and sound great. I have another pair of these that I am planning to keep and restore and don't have space for two pairs. Pictures below. Happy to answer any questions through a PM. I'm in the DC metro area and would prefer a local pickup, not shipping. I'm having a bit of trouble uploading photos here (too big) - please PM for images or see the CL posting I've also put up in DC: http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/ele/4651614400.html Thanks! G
  10. No. That's my sale. I actually acquired the pair I'm keeping (the one with the non-standard screws on the horn) and another pair at the same time. I'm selling off the perfect pair and keeping the other one- I didn't need two pairs but that's how they came. I figured I'd sell the best pair and enjoy the other and work towards a restoration on it if it's needed. Since there's already someone on this forum selling that same speaker I thought I'd give her time to sell before I hijacked her sale and posted mine at the same price. Is that weird?
  11. Thanks!!! So far I've been powering them with a Lepai 2020+ tripath amp (maybe 7 good watts per channel) and I tried them with an older Kenwood KR-4400. Eventually they will be in my HT setup, powered either by a Pioneer HT or a NAD receiver. They're efficient enough that with the Lepai they sound great. Right now until I move some other speakers around they are in my living room, which had a large open middle area and very poor acoustics, so it's hard to do really critical listening. So far I can say that compared to the Klipschorns (which were also in that challenging acoustic area) the CF-4s are much more forgiving of placement, image much better, and have more ample bass. After getting the speakers I noticed that it looks as if they've been apart at some time - there are a couple of different screws holding in one of the horns, and one of the screws holding in the crossover/posts in the back is half screwed in at a weird angle. Everything sounds great but I'm a little worried to open them up and look inside.... I did use Howard's feed and wax on the veneers and they look wonderful. It covered up a lot of the blemishes and minimized some scratches.
  12. Thanks! Does anyone have any suggestions on what to use to bring the finish back? I've used fine steel wool and soap/water to wash walnut KLH veneers, followed by Howard's Restore a Finish and Howard's Feed and Wax. I don't think these warrant that and anyways the Cherry finish seems so fine - I wouldn't want to damage it. Would the Howard's Feed and Wax be ok? Honestly the spot I tried with Old English looked pretty good but am wondering if there is something better I should be working with.... Thanks! G
  13. Thank you! I'll take a look at those posts. G
  14. Just had to share... I acquired a pair of Epic CF-4 series 1 this weekend. They are kind of a replacement for my recently-department Khorns. I've only played with them a little but my initial impressions are that they are very sensitive and dynamic (though not as sensitive as the corner horns), but that they have MUCH more bass and amazing imaging, even in my acoustically-challenged living room. The finish is neglected so I'll be working on that this week, and then they'll be going into my main listening area in the basement. I've been lurking for a while on the forum reading about all the CF-4 mods, and at some point I may attempt some (I've done my own crossover and cabinet mods before but nothing on this scale). For now I'm just going to enjoy. BTW - any recommendations on what would be best to restore a faded cherry finish? I tried a little lemon oil which seemed to work well. I also have Howard's orange wax. G
  15. Thanks Rick! I still think that I will have to part with these. I am having fun with them in the interim however!
  16. Thanks Rick! They would almost fit in this room but i would have to move a lot of other furniture out. They actually look like they fit better in the photo than they do in person.
  17. Hi everyone, I recently came in to a pair of beautiful Klipsch Klipschorns. Serial numbers note they were built in April 2000. They are oiled oak with black grilles. They have the AK-3 crossovers. They are almost perfect, with just two small (smaller than thumbnail) dings to the veneers on the back corners. It took me several days to notice them. Otherwise they are beautiful. The sound is terrific too - they are really bewitching. If they weren't so massive (far too big for anywhere in my small house) I would definitely keep them. In any case I've caught the bug for horns - is there any way to get even part of this beautiful sound in a smaller package? In any case, these must go. I'm going to play them every night until they do and as long as my very-patient wife lets me park them in the middle of the living room. I have a bunch of photos on my camera at home and I'll post a few here from my iPhone as well. I am located in the DC metro area in Silver Spring MD. I won't ship these as they are absolutely massive and require lots of care in transport. I'll help you carry them out but they will take a pretty large vehicle - they are about 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide and deep. I have these advertised on DC Craigslist for $3875. I may also put them on eBay but would love to work a sale with a fellow Klipsch aficionado (I'm a lurker here on the forum and have a pair of KG-4s that I love). Please contact me via PM if you are interested, know anyone who is interested, have questions, or would like to come out and take a look. Thanks!
