  1. Ok revenue from the industry is down 50%.  It's a good thing you have plenty of music already saved up because getting good new music may become a thing of the past when the artists/producers, songwriters get less then a mil whenever you streamers play their music.

So tell me when you worked, or those who still work, did you or do you give away your labor for free?  I kinda doubt it since you all seem to have a lot more disposal income than some schlub like me.

If you like cd's you probably also like coffee. The one set of jitters counteracts the other.

Also, I'm really sorry Chris, but you really don't seem to have a clue as to just how torturous the signal path is for streamed music or cd's. If you really think you are getting an exact copy of the master tape presented to your ears from a digital signal path you are smoking more crack then DC's former Mayor, Marion Berry.

Here's a diagram of a really simple cd player.  Don't even get me started on DAC's and computer sound cards. I have a friend who owns a recording studio. His sound card cost two or 3 thousand, the minimum he says he needs to even come close to getting good sound out of the internet. Yet you guys are pulling this off of the intenet probably using some mass market Dell or iThisorThat thingy. Good luck.

Musicians still get money from live gigs like the old days. Look at Pretty Lights, he gives his music away for free online and makes all his money off his tours. He did also sell out his newest album in Vinyl. Digital has allowed smaller artists to get their name out without signing major record deals and selling their souls to bland music for the masses. That being said, digital has to be done right with a good source material and DAC which is something that has been largely lost by my generation. I am happy with my digital setup and it sounds compatible to vinyl to my ears. Vinyl is important though in that it forces you to step back and focus on all the aspects of music in an analogue way such as tracking force, leveling, angle etc. This makes you a more critical listener so you focus more on fidelity if you decide to get into digital again.

  2. Mozart +1...

    What's a Skrillex?  Sounds painful.

    Its worse than you think:

He is actually a world famous  'Dubstep' DJ. Dubstep of course is the antithesis of what real music should be and is basically a cacophony of horrid noises meant to elicit an adrenalin response.

Here is where things get really weird, Skrillex did a collaboration with the Doors for an electronic music documentary in 2011:

  3. I've previously posted a couple of these in another subject thread in another Forum area but have since also come across John Atkinson's listening room, so I'll post them all again along with his.

I really have to wonder what these guys are thinking and who they think they are as to be so pious to charge people subscriptions for their judgements. And since most of these guys have been in the business for decades you would think they would have accomplished more than this.

    Kal Rubinson's listening room

Wow, he even has a coffee table blocking the sound stage and absolutely no dampening at primary reflection points. Well, its good to know that a 26 year old who bought some kg 5.5's for his birthday and watched a few youtube videos has a better room and knows more about acoustic treatment than the high end reviewers...

  4. It will be down the road but I was thinking of going with the Dayton Audio 15" Reference Series HO Subwoofer and Cabinet Package and a Dayton Audio SPA500 500W Subwoofer Plate Amplifier.

This will be the sub for my 5.1 system with KG 5.5 mains. Has anyone else done this build with success? It looks like a pretty good deal.

  5. The real hope for vinyl (long term) is a sufficient interest in obtaining "tangible" music by the young folks. There would have to be a big enough market among them to make it economically feasible for guys like the one in the article to invest in new facilities or even maintain existing record producing plants. I guess there's hope.

My buddy had a Vinyl collection in College about 4 years ago. Lol he also had a bumper sticker that said, "Listen to Vinyl, because you cant roll a joint on an iPod." I think the other issue is that once you hear vinyl and how much better it sounds than most digital it kind of sucks you in. Its more social as well as you all gather around to put a record on and have to listen to it all the way though instead of people hijacking your computer every 3 songs.

  6. I paid $400 for mine and am happy.

If you are near Utah there are some good deals right now:

    Heresy for $450:

KG 5.5 for $400 OBO, they have been on the market for almost a month so he will most likely bring it down:

  7.

I have always loved Denon for the warm sound. I had an old school Denon AVR I got from my Dad and loved the sound and eventually found an AVR 3801 on Craigslist for $35 and snagged it for the ridiculous low price. It does not have HDMI but I use Optical for my XBox 360 sound and just run the HDMI video directly into the TV as I dont mind occasionally hitting the 'Input' button.

I have heard some people say that Yamaha sounds too "Bright" but I dont know first hand.

The Yamaha's are definitely brighter, but can be "warmed" up a little. I like them better for instruments playing and for HT. They seem to have a "fuller" more all around sound to me.The warmer sound from Denon and even warmer sound for Marantz is nice for people who focus more on voice/jazz type music in my opinion. I just felt that they weren't bright enough for the instruments and didn't give a full enough sound for me. Maybe it was the store where I listenend to them. Maybe it's just that my ears have been accustomed to Yamaha all these years, but I like hearing a nice crisp high and thumping bass with the mids not as focused. MARANTZ didn't seem to have the thumping bass, but were ridiculous with voice/jazz and mids. I feel Denon is in between both.I can say the older Yamaha receivers were warmer in sound than they are today.

That makes sense. I am a novice on a budget so my Denon is my first high end receiver. I had a POS Kenwood before that that had a miserable amount of sibilance harshness so I really wanted to go warmer. I see what you mean though, Saxophones on my KG 5.5's sound holographic but things like high strings and especially piano is lacking a little. I am happy to have found this forum, I am humbled by the knowledge and experience of the people here.

  9. Those charts would be heavily skewed in different directions if they included net worth and/or annual income on the part of the males.

Or height for that matter. I saw another study that said for every inch taller a women is than a man, he must make $40,000 salary to compensate.

  10. One thing I noticed with your setup is how close the side of the couch is to the TV. If someone is sitting on the left they are going to be at an extreme angle that is far beyond the optimum viewing for most flat screen TV's. All in all I think Metropolis's layout is going to be much better. I would tell your wife that the current setup wont let you really enjoy the fireplace from the couch or the circular table due to the couch being in the way. Since the couch is meant for TV watching anyway you might as well do stadium to some degree, even if you want to have two matching couches and one on a riser behind the first then you can put some chairs and a coffee table near the fireplace for a more cozy social experience.

With Metro's setup you will also be able to do far more regarding sound treatment with dampening primary reflection points which will go a long way to making your system stand out and increase your enjoyment.

  11. USA no longer we the people,  Now we the government backed by the wealthiest 1 %.......................................

Of course it is We the peoples fault, as We have handed over all the freedoms we once enjoyed.   People used to make fun of the Movie Big Brother is Watching You

    Now we live it..............................

I live in Utah and drive by the huge NSA Facility every day. Its a massive draconian bunkerlike building you can see from the freeway. Its definitely a sobering reminder of what our government is up to.

  12. Yes, $2k for the entire set. It was a divorce sale and the lady was just wanting her ex's "junk" out of her garage. She was grateful to get $2k and I was grateful to help out. She knew he paid a lot for them but just didn't care as she seemed to be quite well off financially.

This reminds me of when I bought my KG 5.5's. They are my first nice speakers and I came to the house and it was a nice place and it was only the lady with 2 kids so I immediately thought "Divorce Sale". Anyway, I tested them out a while and asked some questions and the lady finally said, "These were my husband's, he loved them but he recently passed away and I need to move so I am selling them..." I felt really bad but she was selling them anyway so I paid full price. When I got home I put on my Lynyrd Skynyrd "One more from the road" album and played Freebird for the guy. Sort of a bittersweet day.

  13. Newbie, You got my interest....I always thought the same thing. So unless I am mistaken .... You run the USB from PC to device and you run anolog left and right out to processor....The question is is there changes needed to be made to Windows to output from device??

That is correct, it has its own drivers which is really nice you you just plug the USB cable in and you can choose it from your [Playback Devices] window. Usually my laptop will run the normal sound card until I plug it in then it automatically switches but sometimes you need to switch it yourself. It is a line level analog out and it has a headphone jack as well as it is used by many as a headphone amp. Here is a cool writup from someone who tested a bunch of different tubes. I think I am going to upgrade to the Amperex one when I get the chance.

    http://www.head-fi.org/t/633006/aune-t1-usb-tube-dac-amp-discussion-thread-see-first-post-for-faq

I have a Denon receiver as well and the combo really brings out the warmth and emotion in the music. That is the thing about the KG 5.5's they are so efficient any kind of bad digital music from my IPod etc causes ear fatigue in 5-10 min so after I got them I made it a mission to try to crack the digital code instead of comitting to just vinyl.

  14. You could try using rockwool bats, cutting them to size and covering it with speaker cloth. Here is an article on how to make acoustic panels with it but I am guessing the same principals apply and its easier to work with than fiberglass:

    http://acousticsfreq.com/blog/?p=62

I lined the back of my KG5.5's with pink fiberglass and covered it with the stock foam insert it came with and it made a huge difference with the bass frequencies as the boxes are big and un-braced.

Some more experienced people might be able to point you in a better direction relative to your specific speaker model though.

  15. Thanks for the help guys. Building the box looks like a lot of time and expense for something that may not even turn out. I saw an ad for a KV-2 for $80 and another Klipsch center that didnt have a model number for $40, I can probably reverse engineer what it is by a picture of the front though. How would the kv-1 or kv-2 work out? I usually only run music with 2 chanel direct so it will be movies and games only (The supercharged Chevelle in Forza 4 is insane with the KG's).

I could always get these and put them on their sides horns together in front of my TV. I am really suprised he has not sold them yet, the speaker market here must be really cold:

  16. Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I'm definitely interested in a La Scala setup. Do you think tube amps will be needed with this setup for home theater use?

If you want great tube sound for music but also want an HT setup I recommend getting an Aune T1DAC:

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IWK8FK2

It is USB DAC so it will only work for your computer but its awesome for Spotify. It sounds so warm and natural I swear I am playing records sometimes. You can also swap out and upgrade the tubes. Digital music usually sounds terrible and harsh on my KG 5.5's but with the tube DAC it has amazing warmth and emotion. I really cant say enough good things about this little device and its cool to see the tube glow near your amp.

  17. I am looking to replace my old and cheap JBL center speaker and finally complete the whole HT with all Klipsch but am working with a budget. I noticed in our local classifieds that someone is selling a Klipsch R-2502-W II for $50 and I can probably talk him down quite a bit as I doubt anyone is going to buy soon. It will be matched with my KG 5.5s and KSB 1.1s for surround. Anyway, I dont want to put it in my wall as I am renting but can I build a box for this speaker and use it as a bookshelf center?

    http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=31861833&cat=&lpid=1&search=klipsch%20center&ad_cid=4

There are some other Klipsch center speakers for sale as well but the specs for this looks better if I can make the project work.

  18. A trick I use when I have speaker stands is to take an old yoga mat and cut it in the shape of the bottom of your speaker then put it between the speaker and the stand. When you put the speaker on the stand press down slightly and the speaker will 'stick'. I did this with my Ksb 1.1's I have for surrounds and it actually really helped with bringing out the details. I have my KG5.5's on cement pavers and used the mat as well to keep the bottoms from getting scratched up and it seems to work there as well.
