Found! Thanks all for the help!

Nice, was it from Audiogon?  My 7005 shows up tomorrow, can't wait to try it out once the XLR cables arrive :)

  2. There are usually a few for sale on Audiogon.  I just picked one up there for $355 + shipping last week.  Look for auction listings from soundvideo, he always seems to be selling Marantz gear from his repeat customers.

I'm pleased to be the one who brought them home this afternoon.  It was a pair of '84 Heresy in lacquered oak (HOL) with slant risers.  Overall very good condition with a couple very minor dings.  I had replied to the ad within an hour of it being listed Sunday morning & I was concerned when I didn't hear anything until that night at which point I was told that the speakers were still available but there were also about 15 others interested.  The seller finally called Monday afternoon and the first thing she asked was if she'd badly underpriced them, so we talked a little about value.  It was clear to me that she didn't know much about what she had, and probably didn't do much research though she was the original owner.  She asked if I'd pay more, so I asked how much and she said $250, so I countered with $225 which we settled on.  I didn't feel like she was jerking me around, more that she was surprised by the amount of interest and having second thoughts about her asking price.  I know I'm happy and I think she was satisfied with the deal as well.  First time I've had a craigslist price go up though!

    --Larry

I replied to the ad very early on Sunday as well.  I didn't hear back all day and assumed they were sold, but late in the afternoon I heard back from the seller that they were free for the next 2 hours and I could come over right away.  I asked for the address and 10 minutes later I got the reply about "15 other buyers" and that someone was offering $300.  I don't argue that $300 is still a good deal but I didn't have time to play games, so I said I would pass.  Congrats on getting them though, they looked clean and were considerably cheaper than the ratty Heresy's I just bought last month.

  5. Wow, have the 2200's been around for over 11 years now?  I thought Outlaw was selling the Model 200 back then?

I was kinda disappointed when he asked for cash on top, but maybe I should have done it anyway (I think he wanted $100 plus my CF-2's)

Sounds like you got the amp end of things handled? A Carver A-500x just popped up on eBay for a reasonable price, its only rated at 250x2 but it is one hell of a beast of an amplifier!

Don't know the seller or anything about this particular amp itself but this is a great model, especially near this price range.

Yep, decided to go with the Outlaw monos from teaman.  I might need a third mono for my center if I go the processor route, but if I get an AVR then I should be fine for power.

Have you looked on fleabay to see what they're selling for?

Ended up being moot, as the guy decided he wanted cash on top and I wasn't willing to do that.  I ended up selling them to a new forum member though!  He'll be using them for rear fill with his CF-4's.

Sorry for disappearing, had a busy few days.  PM sent, let's do this :).  Now I just need to find a decent processor...thinking Marantz 7005, any opinions?

I think that most subs are way over built. It has to have something to do with the mass of the cone material and what they are being asked to do.  You are not going to get your Chorus to play 20hz at 101db even of you apply 500watts.  Check out the H frame subs they can get up and dance with little watts and have the speed to keep up with Klipsch speakers. They are easy to build and are a fun cheep project. For what is worth the Outlaw amps are a great deal and sound good. I have the earlier model M200 and keep them to drive my DIY subs when in rotation LOL

a DIY sub is something I want to try out in the future.  I just need to improve my woodworking skills a little, and get some good tools I suppose :)

Al makes crossovers.  These are my opinions, as xo's incite many thoughts and feelings amongst listeners.  Click on the left menu for an Overview of the various xo types.

I think they are great and the resultant sound is wonderful, of course that involves the particular drivers, cabinet, etc, yada, blah......cost.....blah....

But, there is no doubt that a good electrical network will help maximize all the other bits and pieces we tend to mess with.

    Good luck,

    Gregg

Thanks for the link, some good reading for this weekend!

I wish you where closer. I have at least 10 amps you could try. I know this is not the watts or how many that count. I have Emotiva XPA-2 with 300 watts a channel a McIntosh MC 2270 that has 270 watts a channel and neither sounds better or has mare bass than than my Monarchy SM70 which has 40 watts a channel or My Pass F5 First watt clones which has 25 watts a channel. I assume the 3.1 means you will be using a sub so maybe you have nothing to worry about any way.

So if it's not the watts or how many that count, then why bother with that Emotiva or Mac at all?  Why not just use your 40wpc amp for everything?  Why are we OK with pushing 500w to a 12" sub but not OK with 150w to a speaker that has a much larger driver?  I understand that the horns don't need much juice, but physics tells me that a 15" woofer needs some power to move air around.

As far as the 3.1 goes, I would prefer not to use them with a sub while listening to music, but for movies I don't mind.  There's still a good chance that I won't have a sub in that room for a long time, there really isn't much room for it.

Why in the world are you limiting your self to amps that have 150 watts? Those speakers are 101db right. Have you ever tried any tube amps or class A solid state? I have a Accuphase amp that can do 140 watts A/B and 40 class A. Check out the RH84 three channel amp on Tom's page http://www.wdox.com/   The truth be told the only amp that ever ran out of stem with my Klipsch was Decware SE84 and only makes 1 watt and even it sounded better than my Acurus amp. It the first watt that counts

I listened to these on the tube amps at Matthews house when I picked them up.  While they sounded nice they had little bass response, and even Matt said I would be better off sending lots of power to these.  I also plan to use these in a 3.1 system for movies, not just music.  That alone has me wondering how I would use tube amps in any way that's within my budget and sounds good.

  13. Wow, so many great responses!  Thanks for all the options and sorry I haven't replied until now.  Been busy with work the last couple days and I've had some problems trying to reply to multiple posts on this forum lately.  Anyway, here goes...

Here is an excellent sounding amp with plenty of oooomph to drive your Chorus speakers.  Great price at $650.00 even though it is a tad higher than your $500.00.

That's a nice looking amp, and I've always wanted to try out NAD gear.  Have to see if I can make the budget work though, it's pretty tight now.

I have a brand new never opened Emotiva UPA-200 stereo amp if you are interested. Here is a review, great sounding amp as this is the second one I have owned. $300 shipped to you if you are interested.

I also have a pair of Outlaw Audio mono block amps M2200 pushing 200 wpc that offer both balanced and unbalanced inputs. I was going to hold on to them until I get my Sherbourn receiver set up in that room but i would part with them early if you are interested. $400 for the pair shipped to you if interested. They sell for $379 apiece.

    Tim

Definitely interested in the M2200's, since I planned to get an Outlaw 975 eventually.  I just wish there was a phono input on the 975, but adding an outboard preamp is an option I guess.

I would suggest this amp all day long to anyone.  Cool running, quiet as a mouse, excellent bass drive, and about as neutral sounding as you can find.

    I currently own an Acurus A200 and A200x3 and have owned an A200, (2)A250's, (2)A150's, (2)200FIVE's, (1)200x3, (1)A100, and (1)A100x3.  @Youthman owns an A200 and @CHASLS2 owns an A250 or 200x3 not sure.

    Bill

This is what I love about asking questions here...I'd never even heard of Acurus but now it's on the radar and knowing that many of you have enjoyed them makes me feel better about trying out something new.  The 3 channel might be a good option for me since I only plan to run 3.1 for the next couple years.

    Shaun,

Since you mentioned recommendations...I have an Emotiva UPA-2 available.

    http://emovault.org/EmoVault/UPA-2.aspx

It is only 125w/ch.  However, that will bring your Chorus to concert level and beyond.  I have it hooked to my Chorus II's with ALK ES XO's.  I can't listen to it as loud as it goes.

    I also have a UPA-7, if interested

    http://emovault.org/EmoVault/UPA-7.aspx

It has seven channels, they are not bridgeable.

    Food for thought.

    Gregg

Nice amp, I will keep it in mind.  Curious to know more about the ALK's...are those upgraded drivers?  I can't find any info on them after a couple quick Google searches.

No excuse. You couldn't have been drinking what you were, at that time, brewing....at least you shouldn't have been.

I wasn't, but I had to watch the boil since no one else is home.  Plus there's already a full keg in the fridge, I might have been having some of that...
