  1. I got that much out of my EE courses in college. Never did study amplifiers, though. I went in to ME. Are you saying that the output current of the preamp is determined by it's own output impedence, as long as it is connected to a much higher input impedence at the amp? I just figured that it was the input impedence of the amp that was controlling things. I figured that if I made the passive xover with a summed impedence close to that of the amp, the preamp wouldn't know the differnce. Thanks, Jim N
  2. The wire comes in from the bottom. I orignally used 16 AWG wire. That is what is on the inside.
  3. The notice post on the top of mine says that they are intended for mid to hi sound systems mounting. Not to hang the base units.
  4. Qusestion about the relative level of the components. My preamp has an output impedence of 300 or 600 ohms ( user selectable). Levinson's are down in the few ohm level. If I put a parallel circuit (low pass/high pass)across the output of a few times these values, in conjuction with the input impedence of my amps (100K ohm typical), why doesn't this swamp the output of the preamp since it is a voltage source and not a current source? 5. Thanks, that is pretty slick. I modeled it on Excel to see the results. Any rule of thumb on the value of the resistor. It must be some function of the input impedence of the amps(s). Mine are all 100k except my Rowland which I can vary. Jim
  6. I stuffed each of mine with 4 pounds of polyfil. Takes the boom of the very low bass. I also put on a set of 5 way binding posts so that I could run my good speaker cables with them. I am now trying to figure out where I want the crossover frequency set. Jim Norvell
  7. I know that caps in series pass high frequencies but does putting one in parallel with the woofer instead of a coil in series do the trick. Wouldn't this just short the pre out at high frequencies? Jim
  8. As a mechanical engineer who slept through most of my EE courses, could you EE inclined people give me a little more info. I am now using a Bryston active xover, but would like to go the passive route. At 6dB/octave, I know that you only need simple caps and coils. I guess the resistors adjust the realtive level. At the signal strength at the pre out, these caps and coils can be of smal wattage. Any other tricks that I should know to get started? I have all the data that I need to calculate the values for the components. Thanks, Jim Norvell
  9. I ordered my second one on Tuesday night and it came in today. It only had to come up from LA. It is probably an extra 5 days to the East Coast.
  10. I ordered mine on Monday, the 25th and they arrived on Tuesday, the 5th. Eight days total. I live in Ca.
  11. As of this morning thet still had some. The first one tasted so good that I ordered another. Any body know what the sensitivity of the 500 cps salad bowls with the JBL driver is? Jim Norvell
  12. Got it. Thanks. I plugged mine in as a substitute for the woffer in one of my La Scalas and then tuned my ALK xo9ver for 13 dB down on the mid range. Sure is lots deeper base than the La Scala. I am trying to decide if I want to buy another one. My next setup will be to bi amp with my Bryston 4B to the JBL. The high damping factor should give better control over the woofer than the 300B SET that I now have it plugged into.
  13. Kenratboy, I always thought that I was pretty smart, but how in the ... do you work the speaker posts on these things. When I push in on the button, it covers the hole. With the button out the wire is not trapped. I am going to put two pair of 5 ways on it tomorrow, but now I just have the wires clamped on with some large alligator clips. Jim Norvell

  15. I haven't formed a good opinion of them yet. I am new to tubes. I did back off on the mid range, going from the 5-2 (6.2 dB down) to the 3-0 (8 dB down) on the ALK x overs. I am going to listen for a few more days and then swap the Valve Arts back in. Hard to do a real quick test, since it takes awhile for them to cool down and then reheat the others.
  16. I got my new 300B TJ mesh plates installed last night. They sound pretty good right off the bat. Much better base than the Valve Arts that I replaced.I have no complaints about their sound. If they get better with age, then lucky me. Jim Norvell
  17. What do these "Z" brackets to flush mount the tweeter with the front of the cabinet look like. I pulled my tweeters and mounted them verticley on a 2X6 block of Redwood sitting on top of my La Scala's. Jim Norvell
  18. Does anyone know if the woofers in these JBL monsters have their own rear volume or is the cabinet just one big box? I ordered mine yesterday. I figured that the parts are worth the money. I think my Bryston 4B in bridged mono may just be the ticket. Jim Norvell

  20. Where can I get the dimensions for the base modules for both the K-horn and La Scala? I am looking for the rear chamber volume, the front chamber (between the cone and the baffle) volume and the mouth area. I can get the rest of the dimensions of the La Scala horn from mine without taking it apart. Since the mid range is about 6 dB more efficient than either the base or tweeter, I am thinking of building a second base module to stack on top of my La Scala, along with an additional tweeter to get a better balance. Thanks, Jim Norvell
  21. What did you use to dampen your tweeters? I used dynamat on my mid range horn (La Scala). This message has been edited by jnorv on 02-21-2002 at 10:21 AM
  22. Audio Research (http://www.audioresearch.com/) claims to burn their's in for 48 hours before matching them.
  23. I just put together a set of ALK's. Total parts cost was just over $200. Jim NOrvell
  24. Any advice on breaking in new power tubes? I have a pair of 300B's on order. Is it better to just turn on the amp for a long period or is normal listening better? Jim Norvell
