  1. Alessio, I have had 3 pairs of LaScalas over the years, still have my LSI Splits but now with AA crossovers and CT-120’s instead of the AL and K-77’s.

I ALWAYS give my speakers the once-over when I get them home and I have never had to replace the rubber seal on the doghouse. I have “self-adhesive closed cell foam” on hand should the occasion arise though.

Crack ‘em open and see what’s in there!

The LSI Splits I found were from different years, but look identical. The ‘86 and ‘89 versions of the AL crossover were different though.

Here is the funny thing, I have had the AL,  AL3 and now A/4500 and AA versions.  Honestly, the AL is not nearly as bad sounding as I had expected, but being two different iterations in the pair I had, my OCD would not let me enjoy them as such so I tried the AA and A/4500 when “the price was right”. The A/4500 surprised me at higher volumes, in a good way, for a simple (gentle slope) crossover. The AL3 pair I had was so impressive I never even tried the A/4500 crossover in them...

Here are the two AL crossovers that came out of my LSI’s. This picture is from my archives, lol, but I can dig them out of the basement tomorrow if you need more details. One on the left is an ‘86, the right is an ‘89.

Yours are definitely missing some parts/modded. No idea what is going on there... two coils and a capacitor gone.

Shame you’re “across the pond” or you could have my old ones for the cost of shipping, which would likely be ridiculously pricey. Even cross-border (USA - Canada) costs a couple hours work now. And these babies are heavy.

  2. IN from amp on the top, OUT to bass bin on the bottom terminals.

On the WELL ENJOYED pair of LSI Splits I lucked into, the K-43 woofers were all but shaken loose from the four mounting bolts in the doghouse - something to check later on after you blast the cobwebs and mice rice out of them.

On another pair of LaScalas I had, the terminal clip on one of the K-33 woofers had broken free and would short out(!) on the basket the odd time after moving them around. ***** of a fix with a screw and nylon locking nut, but I will never worry about it happening again.

  3. Ok, I have a pair of LSI Splits... you have them connected properly, unless, as mentioned above someone has monkeyed with the internals. Mine had been scrambled so badly when I got them I disconnected all the wires and resoldered them (without the fuses).

    The fuses!

Are there fuses in the holders? Are they blown?

TEMPORARY fix is rolled up aluminum foil in place of the fuse.

They have some punch to them.

    Maybe an under-statement...

The version 3 pair I had  hit hard and fast. Like a hammer.

The awesome horn almost masks the impact.

It only became apparent how hard they hit when I went upstairs in my sons room with the door closed while they were playing in the living room and felt the impact without the upper frequencies present.

The imaging in the sweet spot is quite the ear opener too.

Only sold them after the first pair of LaScalas graced my living room.

I’ve said this before, but for those of us that have heard the CF-3’s or CF-4’s, imagine a “CF-5” with dual 15” woofers and a K-510 in the middle... Yikes!

  5. My only regrets involve the things I DON’T embrace when fate shines it’s light on me.

These would be right up there on that list if I were less than tank of gas or so away.

Worst case scenario, you sell them for what you paid after you take them for a test drive.

    Anybody making these anymore...?

  6. The CT-120 is the way to go.

I have them and the CT-125’s. The 125’s are sweet, but the 120’s are sweeter.

I am also using Kappa 15C’s in one pair of bass bins.

I think any “perceived” loss of bass by switching out the K-33 is a direct result of the “definite” increase in mid-bass the Kappa 15C brings to any application. It is immediately noticeable.

The only issue with the Kappa 15C’s is the gasket. It is similar to the foam a pool-noodle is made of and compresses more each time you tighten the screws. So much so that eventually the woofer will slap on the motorboard when cranked tight.

Some have suggested an aftermarket gasket. In my FH-1’s it was not required due to the design. In my LaScala bins one of them produced a buzz at spirited levels.

I whole-heartedly preferred the Kappa 15C over the (venerable) K-33 and K-43 in any application yet.

I have yet to try the Crites woofers...

Do you need any of them?

I would have an immediate use for a pair of 2” throat tractrix horns with a 500 hz cutoff!

...unless we’re talking eliptrac 400 pricing...
