I have found a few sellers on CL admitting to me that they had little to nothing to do with the property other than to settle an estate and were looking to maximize the return for the family. Told me they had a rush of buyers "willing to drive hundreds of miles" to pay more money for their under priced stuff. Boom, relisted for more money. I believe some of these CL "sellers" have never sold a thing in their life, but somehow get tasked with the sale anyway. I learned it is better to steer clear of these "maximizers". I continue my search for the original owners who love to sell their stuff to "someone who will do something good with it."

1,2,3,4,5 or 6 channel configurations are all possible options. 3 channels and up utilize all internals without waste.

Adding a monoblock amp for the center, to augment a 6 channel amp,  would make for a very nice 7 channel setup. I use the Classe CAV-150 bridged for the front 3 channels giving me 300W/LCR. I have different 7 channel amp powering the 6 remaining channels @200W each. I love the excess.

This is what I would recommend you go with. No need to look any further. Why downgrade from there? The price is more than right. I paid $800 for mine even though the MSRP was $1499. I have seen nothing develop in the past 2 years to justify the newer models existence. A Marantz SR6012 will cost you $650 and will provide very little difference if any at all. Just make sure pay for and use the Audyssey editor app.

Original owner finally turned them over and I was lucky to be the first contact. This will be my first pair of this series. FWIW I have had KG 5.2/5.5 before.  I never even heard Epics before and wanted to give them a trial run to see what all the praise is about. Not thinking a long term relationship here, more of a fling. Too bad they are black. Later when I have time I will refinish them to make them look like new again. Probably the coolest part is that I can now join the Epic owners group. For me, they are by far the best speakers I've had in my home (25 years of buying and selling). These are end game for me. Some speakers I've had in the past - Audio Physic, Gallo, Magnapan, Theil, ProAc, Totem, Acoustic Energy, Usher, Golden Ear, Polk, Paradigm,  REL and JL subwoofers to try and help the low end and numerous other forgettable Hi Fi favorites. IMHO they're an outright steal at 4k. I'd put them up against DeVore and Harbeth any day. And those sell for 2-3 times as much. 

Sounds like you never owned a Klipsch speaker before. Would you like to try a pair of Klipsch before you say "end game"?

I have read that article before. It is what actually inspired me to go out and purchase 2 pairs of JBL 250Ti's over the past couple years. Coming from a man who personally designed hundreds of products over 40 years, for them to make a his personal top 5 list told me that my own youth era dreams should indeed be validated. Now if I could ever get my hands on Everest models. Probably will never happen for me, but I would settle for M2's LOL.

 

BTW he really got the shafted in the end at Harman. Basically just asked him to come in to the office and handed him his walking papers and escorted out. Other JBL engineers followed him out soon after.

A very accurate statement. Do not confuse any L100 with the new classics, other than they are 3 way speakers in a wood cabinet.

 

Best bang for the buck 3 way vintage speaker in a space conscious wood cabinet with true impressive bass response to 30Hz for under $1K the JBL 240Ti is my go to speaker. Above 50Hz, another story completely. If you want to do better than 240Ti  you could look for JBL M2 Master Reference Monitors or JBL 4367 Synthesis consumer versions. Expect to expand your budget $5K-8K.

 

Other recommendations for high performance, lowish price tags, and smaller cabinet sizes on the used market that will beat the snot out of the ones the OP is entertaining are:

Revel Performa F52

Definitive Technology BP7000

Paradigm Reference Signature S8

 

Klipschorns make the performance list, but unfortunately their size puts them out of the running for this list

 

Of course each one of these speakers has their place, and will perform admirably in their own respectful ways in most peoples homes.

 

In the brand new speaker world, it is very hard to beat proven winners on the used market for any given price range.

He is talking about the new release versions. I have experience with all iterations of the JBL L100/T/T3 as well as L20/L40/L80/L100/L200 T/T3. 

 

I listened to both of these speakers at Axpona 2019 and preferred the Forte III over the L100 Classics, although neither were up to the standards that the other rooms were producing that weekend. I would recommend Dean finding a pair of JBL L100T and rebuild the crossover to the L100T3 specification. This will get you close to the sound of the newer version while evaluating this purchase decision. This route will still allow for a potential purchase of either pair, while still keeping an eye/ear on the new Cornwall IV. If you want a pair of JBL L100T, I have a project pair you could have for $100 plus some gas money @Deang.
