That is a power amp with one input and volume control only.  You could pair it with a pre-amp that has the desired features, but that kit, as it is, lacks most of what you want.
Building a full featured integrated amp, with tone controls and dedicated phono input, is a bit much for a first-time project.  It's a bit much for any project, IMO, unless you're truly dedicated (being paid).

So I need to look for a full featured integrated amp project?

  2. I have done a search on here for some how to videos explaining how to build various types of tube amps how they work etc and can't find anything.

I am interested in SET push pull etc. Low to moderate cost diy type stuff.  Please post some links.

Is it not mounted on a separate board?  The side of the board should have a metal strip that says Klipsch, and then the indicators for the connections.  It looks to be a B3 to me, maybe someone else can chime in.

  4. Been doing some reading and came across this on another forum. From what I am learning here, would anyone say this is a BOGUS statement, or is there any truth to it?

There are significant limitations to SET's. Glorious midrange, the best, really, but many people miss the deep bass, high frequency extension and dynamic range that other amps do better, or do not wish to be limited to highly sensitive speakers. SET is not the way to go if your primary listening is rock or classical orchestra.

As you know an integrated amp can be directly driven by the source (usually high level like a CD player) and usually requires an external phono preamp if you want to spin vinyl.  Before any recommendations can be made a budget has to be established as there are many dozens of possibilities.  Also, do you want one made in the US, or is a Chinese amp an option?  If you have a specific price point in mind I, and lots of others, can give you specific recommendations.

OK I guess I should have been more specific (please remember I know very little about tubes) when you say "integrated amp" you are referring to Preamplifiers and Amplifiers all in one unit, is that correct?

And if I am reading correctly you can get/make a tube amp that is "integrated" is that also correct? And do they say they are integrated?

I totally agree the less electronics ie, pr-amps in the mix the less chance to mess with the sound.

  6. Maynard.. I would love to see you do a low budget SET amp that could be modified more in the future once finances opened up. I have learned a lot about tubes since joining here and looking around.  I also have a question regarding speaker efficiency. I can't seem to find that information on my 1983 Cornwall 1.5.  does anyone know what they are? And does the speaker lose efficiency over time? The speakers sound great I don't plan on messing with them.

    Thanks

  7. Thanks guys.

" I don't recall which speakers you are using and the distance from the speakers to your listening position".

The speakers are Cornwall 1.5 1983 versions.

The listening distance is aoorox 10 feet.

" characteristics of the output transformer. "  What are the different types of output transformers used in SET amps?

" actual listening level "  for this amp I want to be able to hear the music, I can use my other amp to feel it. On a level of 1-10 where 10 is ear meltin and 1 is a quiet whisper, I would like to see a 6-7 with this amp.

  8. If I could jump in here and as a question?

I listen mainly to Pink Floyd Robin Trower etc, then an occasional dose of Black Sabbath Iron Maiden. I have Cornwalls in a 15x15 room and believe I need a SET type amp, will the choice of tubes I use in it dictate the sound I get? What else in the equation dictates the sound you are looking for?

It doesn't have to be extremely loud (I have another amp for that) but I would like to be able to listen to it at a high level.

    Thanks!

  9. Good morning, I am researching to build (hopefully) my own tube amp(s) and have a few questions.

Can anyone point me in the direction (reading material) to find out what the different types of tube amps that are available. (I have seen SET, tube hybird.Tubes in the front and SS rear. , integrates stereo tubes, to name a few). And its a little confusing.

I am 55 and my hearing is not very good. So I am not as a critical listener as some are.

Also with tube amps do I need to build a pre amp also?

My audio room is currently 15 x 15 with wooden floors rugs chairs and sofa.

My current setup is an Onkyo TX-8500, Technics SL-1300 MKII and Cornwalls from 1983, this system sounds fantastic and can get extremely loud (I haven't been past 6, it gets scary).

Anyway, I usually listen to bands Like Pink Floyd, Robin Trower, Grand Funk, Steely Dan etc.

What I want to eventually do after doing this research is build my own tube amp, I am not looking for earth shattering volume (I already have that). I just want to build a low cost great sounding tube system.

My Budget is less than $500.00, hopefully a lot less, I know you get what you play for.

Also I am Located in Brandon Fla. Cant seem to update my signature!

    Thanks for your input!

Yes it is on a board, let me get some more pictures Jimbo.

The crossover type is marked on the metal strip on the side of the crossover board.  Yes, they are Cornwall I.  You should replace all of the capacitors.  You can order them from Bob Crites, or from Parts Express, or elsewhere.

The one that is holding down the white one?
