Was looking to build a pair of AA's from scratch and looking into the tweeter protection of the (for now) OEM k77's. Checking with Crites for zener diodes and found they cost $100 for the set. Being that this price is way out of the price range to work with what have some of you used as an alternative?
The OEM tweeters will be replaced early on so just can not justify the money spent.
Thinking of polytechnics but what value would be used if they are an option?
polytechnics ? where did I get that? Ment to say polyswitch 🙄
And I am by no means a cranker - so maybe I could get by with out them. Just want to keep the OEM AA xovers untouched

The k24 was used in the Heresy II so you should be able to use Crites CW1228 woofers if you are looking for a replacement. But I sense you may be looking for some kind of upgrade.

Hi im returning to ask another few question after a long listen to this Tangent T500 vs T4000, so both are recepped with jetzen caps with the same value as the original and restored cabinet new glue and new stuffings, my concern is after a long read in the forum the T500/T5000 should have bigger and lower bass compare the ported one, but i seem to feel like the other way around, the T500 do feel Deeper than the T4000 but the T4000 seems to have more "forward" bass than the T500, whats weird is that i feel like with the same equipment and room, the T4000 seems to be more open and powerfull but not the T500 which is weird considering the size and the passive driver, anybody can help?
You mention new stuffing, what was used? The OEM both use sheets of foam rubber roughly 12” x 36” or so. Were these replaced with something else? Was something added in addition to the OEM foam? Not trying to imply anything just curious.

Admittedly I have never disassembled the a55g so I am sure you are right. This was just a question of observation, as previously mentioned I have yet to have seen the k55v/k400 mid driver. Only wanted to check things out so when I start on messing around with the LS in a couple of weeks.

the opening of the gasket should match the diameter of the opening at the throat of the horn which should also match the opening of the mouth of the compression driver. Trim the gasket to fit if necessary, when installing do not over compress the gasket as this will result in it bulging which will reduce the diameter of the pathway. Better to have a gasket with a too small hole which you can open up resulting in a smooth fit rather than a gasket with too large a hole which will result in a small cavity between the driver and the horn.
Interesting, so how would you propose one would “trim” such a gasket internal opening?

After closer inspection you may not be able to see this in the pic but the OEM gasket in the horn has maybe a .020”-.030” larger opening that the horn throat opening itself

When we spun off the mid horn of klf-30s to swap out to the a55g drivers it was noticed that the OEM gaskets had a larger opening than the ones from Crites. It was decided to just reuse the OEM gaskets. Moving forward the a55g's are now off so to give them a go on the LS. So has anyone else noticed that the OEM gasket horn to driver having a larger opening compared to the ones Crites offers? Or is it just that the klf-20/30s got these gaskets?

With those beautiful forte IIIs slammed back against the wall like that the rear passives are doing little if anything. Pull them out say 12”-18” away from the wall and see if you like it. If you do find it to your liking them experiment a bit with them to find the best sound.

Go here and you could learn all kinds of info on your CW Is.

For that matter you could just make a filler papel for the larger klf-c7 horn opening and add the required smaller cutout for the LMAHL
-
You may want to consider looking at an Academy center since they use the same “k75/79” horn. Then you could add another one of Dave A's tweeters. The timber between the two centers has been suggested to be very similar. You could go as far as move the xover & 8” drivers from the klf-c7 into the other box and be even closer to the klf-20/c7.

A friend of mine went through this with a pair of old Stratus Golds. He said the ferrofluid was gummed up something awful. Cleaning and replacement made a big difference.
Same deal here, wasn't as difficult to clean out the old goo as has been described by some. The kit that was used from Parts Express had some blotting paper and also used folded sticky side out post-it notes.

As most may already know the schematics are already posted inside of this category https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/113804-klipsch-crossovers/
Somewhat of a long shot but.....
Maybe you could try and take the mid /high section of the klf-30 schematic and the woofer section of the klf-c7 schematic and put them together. I doubt it would actually be that simple though as for one thing the output if the 8” drivers will not match that of the 12” units. But not to say you couldn't add L-pads to tone down the mid/highs. Just a thought.
This may be the only option to try as it is very unlikely that you will get anyone to design an xover from scratch short of paying an engineer.

Will probably prefer my Quartets with more bass but hate to pass up a nicely cared for pair of H’s. Will offer $500 and see what happens 😁
go for it.

I think Crites has a titanium diaphragm for the C7 midrange
Yes Crites does, it is the same one that is used in k75, k76, 79s and others. I installed one in my klf-c7 and it was a major improvement. Some will poo poo on this but I replaced the ferrofluid with new on all three tweeters (klf-30s - k79s & klf-c7 - k90) when I installed the new Crites Ti diaphragms.

You be the judge of condition but the typical price for Heresy I & II are ~$400-$500 in decent shape. But with you being way up there in Alaska I bet your choices are fairly slim.

Did you ever end up putting Dave A's MAHL tweeters in them?
Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
No, I always wanted to but the money just wasn't available and now I will be focusing on the LaScalas with any free money I may have.

After a few hours I could not stand it anymore and dragged out my forte IIs. Looking back I had remembered that I was blaming a piece of gear for a really crappy sound I was hearing.
I had just finished building the new xovers and put them in at the same time I changed out the piece in question. Looks like the untouched OEM xover was the problem and not the other part. Looks like the built xovers will go back in and maybe the OEM units will be recapped at some point.

Zener diode alternative for AA's
in Technical/Restorations

@henry4841the end game will be replacing the OEM k77s with something like Crites tweeters. Just want to do things one step at a time. Had learn that the hard way years back in drag racing days.
