  1. Well, I again checked out Elizabethtown from the local library, only this time I actually watched it. It was OK, but I was disappointed in the absence of recognizable locations in E-Town. They didn't even have a scene in the service department of the Chevrolet-Nissan dealer. What were they thinkng?

I'm with Amy regarding the shoes. What kind of safety issue could have prompted a recall of shoes? If they explained, I sure missed it.

  2. Great description! I'm glad you got it working and are enjoying the results.

Now while you're reacquainting yourself with vinyl, how about jotting down some notes regarding how and when you discovered Klipsch the man and Klipsch the speakers?

  3. Welcome Roy!

The serial numbers should be stamped into the edges of the backs of the cabinets. The serial number information below has been posted here many times. It should enable you to identify the year of manufacture.

Klipschorns of this vintage had the s/n hammer stamped into the tailboard, woofer access door or inside the woofer chamber.

  4. Who and Michael-<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

My experience with my 4 Speakerlab Skhorns and 300 WPC of Dynaco ST-400 power was consistent with your posts. I too made a conscious decision to slow it down and lower the volume periodically to regain some headroom and to give everyones hearing a breather.

Even so, I feel that I did permanent damage to my high frequency hearing. I jokingly refer to my job deafening adolescents all over greater <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Detroit when I tell someone about my mobile DJ days. I know that I did regular damage to T-35 voice coils; I mustve replaced a dozen over two years.

Your reply suggests that all capacitors deteriorate over time, is that true of the sealed plastic cylindrical variety as well as the Klipsch cans or GE motor-runs?

I deliberately avoided qualifying my perception that replacing the old stock caps in the Heresies and Las Scalas with your GE caps improved the sounds, as I didnt want to color the responses. As you indicated, the improvement was noticeable in the higher frequencies.

What prompted this question was curiosity over whether I should open up c. 70s LS3/5A clones to refresh the capacitors inside.

  6. Please dont use this thread as a platform for a flame war regarding the relative merits of various types or brands of capacitors. My questions are general rather than specific. FWIW, Ive replaced the old stock caps in Heresies and La Scalas with new GEs from BEC and was pleased with the improvements.

    <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Intuitively it makes sense that the can capacitors used by Klipsch in its balancing networks will dry out, or otherwise go out of spec, after decades. Does the same thing happen to the various cylindrical capacitors with sealed plastic enclosures?

If capacitors in a crossover (any crossover) deteriorate over time, what effect would it have on the performance of the speaker? Would the bass get flabby, would the highs disappear, would the highs be exaggerated or would there be other evidence of capacitor degradation?

As a matter of course, would it make sense to replace the decades old capacitors in any old speaker? Even if they havent deteriorated over time, arent the newer types better?

Now youre free to express a preference for one brand of capacitor over another, but please dont attack those who express a preference for something that you dislike.

  7. Courtesy toward those for whom American English is not his/her primary language is a prerequisite, whether they are residents of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />USA or any other country. FWIW, Marius is a resident of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

If MICA, aka Marius, aka (you get the idea) was criticized for spelling, grammar, syntax, etc. that was wrong. I recall that comments about his spelling, grammar, syntax, etc. were used as evidence of a similar writing style to link the numerous profanity and insult laced posts and emails with various pseudonyms that all belong to Marius by whatever name he uses.

Irrespective of the specifics of his transaction with George Wright, Marius has earned the scorn and abuse heaped upon him by the forum. He brought it on himself.

    Bob Seger

Or by anyone, thats one song if I never hear again I'll be happy.

I'll bet $1000 if Bob could go back to this time in his life,he would.

Several years ago I worked with a woman who was driving to the office one day and got stuck behind a guy in a white Corvette who was not driving fast enough to suit her. After tailgating and cursing the anonymous driver, she finally got an opportunity to pass the Vette in her Honda Prelude (she claims to have passed the Vette without delivering a single digit salute). As she got out of her car, the Vette pulled into the lot and out stepped Bob Seger, who was one of our clients. If he recognized her as an impatient driver, he was gentleman enough to not say anything.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Her brother had been the starting quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines, so a competitive nature was in her genes.

  9. Daddy <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Dee's advice to Marius (MICA) is indeed excellent, but will it fall on fertile ground?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

If one takes the time to read MICAs other posts (search "MICA" in 2-Channel) and gives credence to the comments from credible long-time forum members, e.g. Guy Landau, regarding MICAs history of profanity laced emails, the parable of casting pearls before swine seems to describe DDs attempt to educate MICA.

IMO, the real issue is not the amps, the refurbishment, etc. The real issue is MICAs propensity to immediately resort to insults and profanity when he is disappointed. Given MICAs negative history on this forum, it was naïve for him to originally post the insult laden emails and expect support from the forum members.

IMO George Wrights responsealbeit flawedto this unfortunate situation was much more civil and reasonable than MICAs. I pity anyone who must interact with MICA in the future. OTOH, I'd deal with George Wright without reservation.

  10. Michael-

When I saw "Steve Howe" I thought you were referring to the other SH who was an often suspended, due to drug and alcohol problems, MLB pitcher. It was good to see that your great review was about the more positive SH.

Then I opened the paper and read that SH, the troubled former pitcher, just died in a rollover accident in his pickup truck. Two gifted individuals with the same name and much different outcomes; such a waste of life and God given ability.

  11. I suspect this was done to ease the fears of, and stop calls from, people like my brother-in-law. While he was trying to hook up a telephone he called me at least four times for direction. Each time I said, "There are two wires. You can hook them up either way."

He would be much more comfortable with the new Hovlands, if only he weren't color blind.
