  1. which one? The guy I worked for had a couple over there.
  2. I didn't say rice was cheap ... but compared to potatoes... It did take some getting used to sticky rice. and it being served with EVERYTHING. Order spaghetti and they ask one scoop or two of RICE. they brought two guys from the mainland to get the bowling alley up and running - the machines, that is ... I was one. Kauai is small. And I am somewhat of a character ... didn't take long to meet folks.
  3. I know Kauai is/was backwoods ... country folk to people from Oahu. I got that a lot when I would go to seminars in Honolulu Honolulu is LA with a better beach....
  4. Well sheeeeeee-it I dinna know PWK was from Elkhart IN. My mom's family is from the area and I was born/raised there. All the music I knew about from there was Conn, Artley.......... the band instruments. My dad gave up traveling jazz musician to raise kids and worked at Artley/Conn/CoinArt. Never gave up playing. Had a house band, dixieland, at a steakhouse in Tucson for 25years Oldtimer not everything is/was expensive when I lived on Kauai. Stay away from the grocery. Eat rice. Forget about spuds, unless you are feeling flush. Eat local. Bananas, papayas, oranges, mango, avos are free. Fish is cheap. I spent a LOT of time at the beach. Usually with a fishing pole in hand. Whipping the shorebreak with light freshwater gear and 6lb test. I was bluewater once a week as I got to know folks.
  5. me too. Overrated.. But their coffee is pretty good.
  6. that looks like a recipe for French bread. Might try letting it rise once, punch it down, then use it ...
  7. It blowin' by, north of here ... SanDiego is a better indicator of our chances during the winter. The clouds broke and it's a nice day. Just got off the roof, plunging the chimney before it too warm to wear the clothing I prefer when doing that. I don't much care for cutting wood when it's warm, either. rule of thumb for the "bush" here it bites, stings, impales or is otherwise poisonous .... It nice to comfortably wear protective gear.
  8. if you are eating mj, be sure to"decarb" [decarboxylate] it first.
  9. well DizRotus getting treated to a rarity in the SW ... overcast Hope you're staying thru tomorrow
  10. Just get some of each. No problem I have to agree with Oldtimer, though. A premium Kona is hard to beat. That why it's $40/lb. Lappert's Kona was $25/lb 20 years ago. Wonderful coffee.
  11. I hardly left Kauai in the 8 years I was there. Went to Molokai 2X. Things got too busy on Kauai for me. HaHaHa common thread brought me back to the mainland. Family .... 20 years later ... still here. Might make our way to the islands when the wife retires. She gonna work another year.
  12. the locals are fine with it. it's all the activities they have in Tucson this time of year. Now, it's the BookFair we went from Aug to mid Feb w/o significant rain say Oldtimer what island you on?
  13. If I had looked/known when I signed up .... around town, we have a lot of Ray's. To avoid confusion, there is PlumberRay, WalkingRay, CrackheadRay - this one is legend then there are "Reds" ... RedBilly, RedGeorge lots of Bills, too WildBill, RedBilly, DollarBill .. I can only imagine what they use to reference me. weather turned crap for DizRotus. Hope they had indoor activities for today. Overcast and mid 70's. Rained a few drops here. CrackheadRay... I will remind you, this is a small community. Everyone knows everyone. Seems CrackheadRay stole a tractor and used it to break into a house. Stole some guns and food and didn't think the homeowner would know who it was ... We do think CHRay had some help thinking this up, though ... then when the cops showed up, he refused. enter the SWAT team, Blackhawk helicopter ... the whole circus he gave up. no blood spilled. but what a dimass
  14. I may be the pony express. If they find their way to Arkansas in May, I'll fetch them from there. Yeah, I have other Klipsch to listen to ... a pair of R15M. Kinda started at the bottom and trying to skip the in-between steps.
  15. It will be May at the soonest [unless someone from there is moving here sooner] and prolly Oct before they get home.
  16. I have a pair sitting in IN, waiting for me ... After reading too much, the comments about lack of bass had me thinking. I'm feeling much more assured.
  17. It's a beauty. The clouds give it some texture. we kinda take our spectacular sunrise/sunsets for granted. We jus' kinda take our nice weather for granted. tha't why it's called "Land of Manana". No hurry. no worry ... it will be nice tomorrow There even less urgency in Hawaiian Time.
  18. I might use the baking sheets... I leave "non-stick" coatings alone 'Round here, if it gets fried, browned or sauteed, it goes in cast iron.
  19. I thought that was a definition of "balanced diet", a drink in each hand DizRotus is prolly runnin' around in his skivies. 80`. I opened the doors and windows and stripped down to one layer of clothing.
  20. Good Q. Never thought of that. Better be good friends. There is a little slider vent/window on either side. It's been a "shed" for a long time. Odor is gone. Long as the skunk isn't residing under it. EllieMae woulda been pissed. I trapped and transplanted a half dozen coons and 2 skunks. The coons went to the lake. Skunks -- no further than necessary. Just across the creek.
  21. ask jimjimbo about how reliable flight out of SouthBend IN are. That place is like a black hole for airplanes. They land. And never leave. What happens, is crew comes in "out of hours". Like truck drivers. Required to sit for several hours and rest. Flights may be delayed for several hours for no apparent reason.
  22. DizRotus, flying is an ordeal now. I was groping for the word... That's why I am renting a vehicle for my road trip. I can get from here to Chicago in 30hrs of driving time.... and not have to search for bags it still a bit fresh down here. It's about 10` cooler in the AM. Callin' for 80`. Nice for your trip. Chance for rain Sunday. I think Sat night/ early Sun... have a good time.
  23. We are gong to convert our redwood two hole outhouse into a sauna. Much of the building materials for this place are reclaimed/recycled. The redwood and windows [the glass has wrinkles] came from an old railroad station. The aluminum "siding" on the back of the house, is old litho plates. Interesting place. We got contents, too. stuff ranging from leghold traps to a RadioFlyer wagon. A converted truck bed "trailer" that has wire spoke wheels. The bed is rotted away. I have no idea where the pumpkin [rear end] came from. A friend said it looked like a tractor. We bought half a museum... pieces of mining equipment in the yard. All things the original owner dragged here. I keep expecting to run into a lockbox when I am trying to dig. The garden was almost an archeological dig. I have pulled up woodstove parts, sash weights more crap than I can recall....
