  1. 2 slots, without a doubt. That way you can eat yer bread while two other slices warm up... otherwise is a waste of space/time/effort/money.

Now, 2 slots with the oversized bagel available real state? hmm an none of that flavored spread nonsense. Or reduced fat. Yuck.

I often go back and forth between settling where I am and just listening to music or to keep chasing the next whatever.

As for the smoothing, I though my original looked somewhat flat. Once you get the top/bottom/right/left set it has a lot more ups and downs.

Am I correct that mine has roughly 105 to 135dB (30dB) swing based on the left, vertical numbers and the high/low of my readings of my red line? Am I further correct that as "flat response" would be one where the difference is only +3dB and -3dB? So the goal is to tame back those peaks?

From personal experience, perfectly flat graphs usually result in somewhat "boring" sounding speakers. But this is such a tricky and touchy subject, because each and every one of us thinks/hears certain speakers sounding "better" than others. I like extra oomph depending on what I'm watching/listening to, so a house curve is mightily recommended (and fun to play with!)

This is an interesting read: https://www.stereophile.com/reference/book_review_isound_reproduction_loudspeakers_and_roomsi/index.html

Also, Floyd Toole is a well of knowledge, his articles, books and papers are insanely good.

As far as the ups and downs in your graph, I wouldn't worry too much about them because I don't think you can measure a flat, native response from any speaker unless you are in an anechoic chamber.

Lastly, if you have about 75 minutes to spare, this is absolutely worth watching:

  3. If I remember correctly, smoothing = masking certain ups and downs in which certain frequencies may or may not be (noticeably) impacted. Sort of a vague idea, sorry.

For the overall range of, say, 20hz-20khz, you would apply a certain smoothing, for just your fronts, center, subwoofer, etc, another...

But I think it has to do with what are you looking for in the graphs? I remember measuring my subwoofers and the scale was something like 5-120hz, but was also told to increase to 300hz because of how it would blend with the other speakers.

Quite frankly, I ended up storing my Umik-1, uninstalling REW, and simply enjoying my speakers. I was getting too obsessed with all that, but there is a plethora of knowledge in that guide, allowing you make you system sound better***

***depending how much effort you want to put into it 🤪

Wow, how hard is it for a distributor to sweep a box off before shipping? I know it doesn't affect the contents but you would think that the guy shrink wrapping them would have some company pride. Maybe the "white glove" service would of cared...:)

    Enjoy!

Upon cleaning up the boxes, they would have to change the name to "dirty, dusty, brownish glove service"

Found a HK 630 in a thrift store; seems to be working fine... I guess?

Missing a knob, little dusty and dirty, but the sound is sweet.

Upon powering it up, the woofers of my Rb61 kept moving in and out for a few seconds; no clue what that was.

Going to clean it up and perhaps find a tune up place in Albuquerque. So excited!

  6. My personal record is 21 sneezes in a row, which happened two years ago with our lovely allergy season in Albuquerque.

I should go back to work now.

Jeff at JTR is pretty much a one-man show (I pop into AVS every so often). I suggest you give him a call - heard it's easier to get a response that way.

With that being said, I used to have dual S3000 from PSA and now own dual XV15se. Tom V. is one helluva guy, and I'm pretty sure he never sleeps, since he's always available.

If it were up to me, PSA all the way.

Good luck with the sale of your RSW-15s.

  8. Just FYI, I believe the RS-42II on amazon is per speaker, so it's actually $360 for the pair.

Also, Frys just had the RB-61 for $199 a pair (deal ended already). If you're patient, they will likely come out with a similar deal again soon. You can sign up for deal alerts on slickdeal.

I'm a big fan of bipole/dipole surrounds, but I think it's more of a personal opinion situation... don't think you can go wrong. Unless you listen to a lot of multi-channel music, I think you can save money on surrounds. YMMV...

    Good luck!
