  1. I’ve often heard that putting a TV between two high end loudspeaker is one of the worst things you can do to a pair of high end loudspeakers….

So it got me to thinking…what if I cover up the TV with something that doesn’t reflect sound when not watching TV…so I came up with this…

Honestly though I can’t figure out if it sounds better, worse or if I’m just an idiot….

Sometimes (with blanket on) I feel like center imaging is better and that some sounds have the edge taken off, less shouty.

But then sometimes with blanket off I feel like the sound could be more livelier?

    What do you all think?

  2. Gorgeous speakers! And yes they'll sound even better once you get them in a more optimal position in your home.

I know a lot of guys toe these things in crazy amounts but I found that in my house they sound best as close to the wall as possible and toed-in just ever so slightly.

Hi I wanted to share my experience. my room dimension 11.5 x13.5 ft w/ 9.5 ft ceiling height. I mentioned it cause I used the heresy 4s w/ the 20 watter Schiit Aegir. The only 799 usd amp that ended up with streophile Class A recommended component. And they pair well. Using a Schiit Saga+ preamp w/ sylvannia NOS tubes. Usually the volume control at 3 o clock I found best. Tried to meausre it and its somewhere 80-85 db using an iphone with Audi0 Control app. Btw I would just like to mention if you can raise the H4s from squatting on the floor to ear level tweeter. Thats where the biggest benefit that the speakers can get. FYI. Just sharing my experience. These speakers image well

Yep I've seen numerous reviews where the reviewer ended up putting Heresys on speaker stands and recommended doing so.

I recently got the CXA81for the system at my rural place. Very impressive integrated! Prior to the Cambridge was using a nice integrated tube with a Benchmark DAC, which I thought sounded very good, but the CXA81 with it's built in DAC wipes the floor with the old combo. Highly recommended.

I'm strongly considering a CXA81 to power my CWIVs. What speakers is your powering? I'm also looking at the Rotel that's about $500 more.

Ive heard good things about that Cambridge Audio CXA61, it's $1000.

I'm strongly considering the CX81 myself. I like that it has balanced XLR inputs so that I could go XLR from my Schiit Modius into the CX81. Currently I'm going from the Modius into an Onkyo TXNR757 A/V receiver via RCA and I tell you what: bypassing the internal DAC of that Onkyo was one of the best audio upgrades I've ever done. I wasn't even a true believer in DACs up to that point. And maybe it isn't the DAC chip that made the difference, maybe it was just bypassing the noisy internals of the receiver. But whatever it was, it was night and day.

undertow is mixed & recorded very well, sounds great up loud or at "normal" levels.  loved pushing that one on my K-horns & chorus2 & forte2.

ive been a tool fan since the 90's with undertow... if you like tool, check out a perfect circle, has that maynard sound but so much more musical.  & for a totally different twist check out puscifer, another of maynards side projects with a totally different sound.

Oh yes I love APC! It was actually their last album "Eat The Elephant" that led me to really exploring and becoming obsessed with Tool. I couldn't really get into Puscifer but I do love that cover Maynard does of Bohemian Rhapsody. Great stuff.

Yep it's KnuKonceptz, kind of a dorky name but the only reasonably priced actual copper speaker cable I could find in fairly thick gauge. Originally got it to replace some cables in an old Akai power amp that used 10awg internally. Great stuff, super easy to work with.

Awesome! Just picked up a 100ft roll from Amazon. Of 12 guage, that is.

You are correct, extreme toe in decreases the sound stage. When I had it slightly toe in, it sounded great at my work station in the dinning room but not at my listening position which is only about 8ft from speakers. My living room is 14x17x8 and mostly opened to the dinning room 13x15x8. The right speaker is 32in from the sidewall and 37in from the backwall while left speaker is 12in from side and 16 from back/fireplace. This off symmetry placement took away most reflecting sound from walls and provide ideal sound stage width and depth for the near field listening critical position while provides decent musical at my work station about 17ft from speakers. The window in the back wall and patio door at the side wall also good for adjusting amount of reflection sounds too.

My room is also mostly opened up to another room. I think this does add to a lively room, which I'm glad because I couldn't visually deal with the speakers being setup anything other than perfectly symmetrical in my room lol.

  9. After about a month of ownership I've come to the conclusion that getting too aggressive with toe-in can really diminish the sense of scale, and narrow the soundstage. Which I suppose would make sense. I've found the sweet spot for them in my room to be about as close to the corner wall as possible (2 inches on side wall, about 8 inches on back wall), and toe them in just ever so slightly. Room is pretty small, 11ft wide, 16ft long and 7ft ceilings. One day I'm going to build a house here with a purpose built listening room.

of the 3 tool shows i saw, only the last one for 10,000 days had poor SQ, i agree the speakers were being pushed too hard on that show, i was seated dead center in the 1st row of the balcony so the hanging center 2 or 3 speakers were pointed right at us.  the other 2 shows i was off to the right side & it sounded much better.  i also saw a perfect circle at the same location & they sounded so much better.  this location has about 8500 capacity & all other concerts ive seen there sounded very good but loud, even motley crues record db show 30+ years ago sounded better than the last tool show.

yeah brain itch is not good... after all those concerts & many years of overly loud home audio trying to recreate the live shows & loud noises like high horse power engines with open headers at the drag strip i have a little bit of tinnitus in a dead silent room, so i have stopped abusing my ears & will wear ear protection at any future shows.

Agreed on the Tool shows! Hey that's awesome you've seen them 3 times though! I only just became obsessed with Tool in January 2019. So thankfully I only had to wait 8 months for their long awaited follow-up to 10,000 Days lol. I absolutely adore Fear Inoculum for critical listening. On my CWIVs, 10k Days and Fear Inoculum sound best. Lateralus and Aenima can sound too shouty at times. Undertow may actually sound good though, I can't remember.

to me concert levels are more like mentioned above with tool,  ive seen them 3 times & probably 50 other big name rock bands & many smaller rock shows in local bars.  back in the late 80's motley crue was touring for one of their new albums & was bragging about setting records for the loudest concert, they set a record of i think 121db in my city. when its that loud your ears distort & you feel kind of a tickle sensation. way too loud!

so i'd say concert level is anything above ~95-100db, do that for an hour or so & you will feel it in your ears, mine were muffled for a day or so after that motley crue show.

AKA "making your brain itch" haha., Not good for your health lol.

I was not impressed with the SQ at the Tool show, at least from my seat. I felt like the speakers they used were being stressed too much and the whole time I was thinking how Tool sounded better on my headphone rigs haha. This was before I bought my Cornwall IVs.

  12. I saw Tool last year in Memphis and it was waaaaaaay higher than 95-100db. I would guess 115db. It was so loud that my ears felt like they were stuffed with cotton for a few hours after. If I ever go to another rock concert like that I WILL wear ear protection of some kind.

When I really want to rock out with my CWIVs I hit volume levels of about 105db peaks. I don't listen at this volume for more than a few songs. My sweet spot is usually 95db peaks. Which, honestly, is still too loud for extended listening. My listening position is 9ft away from the speakers and it's here where I do my measurements.

Hi Andre and Pondoro. Thanks for your responses.  I got the speakers to work again without a click. I just reconnected the red wire into the amp. The clicking went away and the sound returned. Perhaps the bare wire connection is just a bit sensitive? Apologies for the delay in getting back on this.

    Speaker wire 2.jpg

My bet is you had it shorted. I didn't like the way it looked just judging from the picture you posted. I think it's very likely some bare wire from the positive terminal was touching bare wire from the negative terminal. Glad you got it worked out though.

  14. Just to add: my room is pretty damn small. 10.5ft wide X17ft long and only 7ft tall ceilings. I think Klipsch recommends CWIVs be 6 feet apart minimum and that's about exactly what mine are. They also recommend ceilings of 8ft tall minimum and I'm a good foot under than recommendation. I don't notice any kind of wild reflections or anything though and the sense of scale is still amazing.

I'm still not 100% sure on the "best" toe-in placement in my room, I still have experimenting to do.

  15. This is what I ended up with.
I installed furniture sliders under my CWIVs. I would suggest you do the same. You can thank me later haha.
Also be sure you have a tape measure handy. I don’t know about you but I’m super OCD about the speakers being perfectly symmetrical and a tape measure will help you achieve just that.

  16. Honestly, I'm using an R-25C at the moment.....so an RC-64III couldn't possibly be worse than that haha.

I'm also considering not using a center at all. I find the Cornwall IVs to produce a fantastic center image on their own. Running them in 2 channel stereo while watching movies/TV, the sound of someone speaking appears as if it's coming right out of the TV screen. It's actually pretty badass.

So let me pose this question: would you not use a center channel at all before you used a non-Heritage center channel?

Is that what you call a "phantom center"?

Lateralis and Ænema totally have the "mixed by the guitarist and vocalist" vibe going on. Production value on those is about halfway between "Blizzard of Ozz" and a good album.

Absolutely! And in my experience the Cornwall IV does not like grainy effects. I tried listening to the new Chevelle album, an album I really like, and I found it completely unlistenable on my CWIV. Album is great on any of the headphones in my collection.

It also doesn't help when the moderator edits his post down to be even more unintelligible.....For seemingly no other reason than to be petty. I was only able to read the OP because someone else quoted it and even though it wasn't the easiest thing to understand, it doesn't take a genius to understand that he lowered the sub output by 3db on the receiver end and raised it by 2db on the back of the sub....

+100 on Beck's Morning Phase!  When I stream the 96/24 version of that album to my CWIV's the quality of the sound is otherworldly.  I think Morning Phase won a production Grammy so we're not the only ones who've noticed!

Beck's Sea Change is another phenomenal-sounding album.  And, of course, anything by TOOL, but Pneuma and Culling Voices off of Fear Inoculum are pretty great demo material for dynamics.  :)

I'm basically obsessed with Tool. IMO, 10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum sound fantastic on my CWIV. A lot of parts on the Lateralus album sound kinda harsh to my ears, same with Aenima.
Right In Two (from 10k Days) is currently one of my absolute favorite songs to blast on my CWIV.

  20. So what's the consensus on the best non-Heritage center channel to pair with Cornwall IVs? Obviously another Cornwall IV or Heresy IV or Forte IV would be best, but for space reasons that isn't even close to feasible. So is the RC-64 III the best pairing as far as traditional center channels go?

  21. Last night I had quite the listening experience listening to Becks 2014 album "Morning phase" on my Klipsch Cornwall IVs. This album is so warm, lush and just cozy to listen to. Really amazing bass on this record which translates well to the Cornwall IVs. Anyone looking to evaluate the bass on their Cornwall IV should give it a listen.

Folks know I'm a funk head.  However, I'm not married to a subwoofer or try to have stunning results below 30Hz.  The bass I like is snappy from 40 to 80.

Sucha  song that has great snappy bass...a funk song...is "Heartbreaker" by ZAPP.  There is no low end....but has the funk bass that is fast.  This isn't bass guitar bass....although I like that too.

When guests are over and music is playing, it's common for them to be impressed when I turn the subs on and shake everything in the room.  Seriously though, I usually have them off when I'm sunk down in the chair listening on my own.

Agreed. Average consumers are pretty much only impressed by room shaking bass. Since I took delivery of CWIVs almost a month ago: I've not watched a single movie, I've only listened to music and I've had my cheap Klipsch subs disconnected.

Though I am sourcing a sub woofer amp to power two JL Audio 13w6 subs in a sealed enclosure I used to have in a truck. I've found the 1000 watt Dayton and am considering it strongly. Any other options that won't break the bank?
