  1. Hey guys. I think I started this thread and have been following the off topic discussion. šŸ˜¬ I did get the speakers I wanted. And started another thread. A pair of 78 La Scalas. Iā€™m traveling to see some Phish music right now for a few weeks. But would love to check others systems of some locals. I enjoy reading about the horn loaded subs. I am wanting to try open baffle subs which donā€™t get a lot of talk on here maybe because they donā€™t blend well with horns? Or maybe no oneā€˜s ever tried them? I love experimenting. Iā€™ll try anything! I love music but mostly I just like listening to sounds.
  2. close! actually red eye SF to Boston, rent a car and drive to Bangor Maine to see 2 nights of Phish. Then to Phiily for 3 Shows at Camden.
  3. YES. i need these for sure
  4. here's the problem... I have a flight to catch and I'm sitting here listening to song after song. I need to get stuff done! ugh
  5. you were right!! thanks!
  6. Thanks for all the input and the rational reasoning! But geeze on the other thread people were spending all kinds of my money and thats more what I'm used to. Well how about this? Everything is working fine now in both speakers! There is something up because they seem to be a bit finicky. Maybe they just needed the cobwebs blown out. I'm listening and enjoying with no hiccups for couple hours. Reassessing my goals now. I love the idea of the two way but I have to research a bit more and maybe i won't want to know until I try it. I do know that I'm nervous running my 45 watt tube amp through some complicated active crossover. AND I'm running my speakers now with a whopping 6 watts and thinking maybe the 45 isn't going to cut it with 2 watts? In which case i could sell it and fund Jubilees. I have to say I'm really, really enjoying the speakers and thinking what I need more of... detail? Brightness? I don't know. They sound pretty damn great now.
  7. i don't know if the end goal is a two way.... just a thought. sorry for the confusion. I like the journey.
  8. because I won't know how much more amazing they are if i don't have a benchmark. I mean how much money are we talking for new AA crossovers compared to the Crites? ( with the tweeter up grades) i think its only a couple hundred bucks? i don't know? thousands?
  9. "Doing it right" by replacing both crossovers in both speakers instead of having one with a couple components that are new.
  10. I don't know. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļøThats definitely a thought.....maybe because I want a fully functional working pair of La Scalas for comparison? And If i buy a new crossover, OEM or aftermarket I have to do both sides. And if I'm spending a couple hundred dollars might as well spend a little more and do it right? I'm saying this just thinking out loud, with no solid facts.
  11. I'm going away for a week so thats hard on the repair/restore front but amazing on the research and obsess front. If I had to decide on the path now I think this is what I would do. 1 order new crossovers a/4500 and tweeters from Crites not sure why this decision other than I enjoy and lower levels and it is a popular choice. 2 clean up cabinets finish the insides can i used Watco Danish oil? 3 enjoy and collect info and parts and plan for a jubscalla upgrade
  12. After switching the crossovers I though is was a loose connection because for a minute it seemed fine. I ended up adjusting the balance and adding some gain digitally with Roon, my software player, and it balanced it out. Thats how I'm estimating that its 10dbs off. Here is a picture. I feel like the connecting of the black wire on the right of the picture a little compromised.
  13. I started a "I love my Heresy IIIs" thread What should I get now? and that turned into a WTB thread .... There has been some great advice and suggestions and I'll follow up here. Thank you everyone that has helped so far. So i picked these up these below. I paid 1350$, the finish seems nice and they appear to be not abused. I got them set up and realized one is speaker is about 10 dbs quieter than the other. I switched the crossovers and the quietness followed the crossover. I had plans to switch them out so I'm not that concerned. But what do I do? I'm trying to think of my long term goals. What are my priorities? I want to keep it simple. I wanted a sensitive speaker that i could use with a new 45 amp, only 2 watts. I know this can be argued its not enough, but I was able to enjoy with my less sensitive Heresy 3s. So that's a goal of mine to use this. (Side note. I did notice last night when using a solid state first watt DIY ACA, that is only 6 watts, how much better it was) I 'm interested in biamping but I pretty sure that can only be done with an active cross over, and that is often a digital one and not analog? this goes against the simple part, but I'm open. And another thought.... I LOVE the idea of using the La Scala as the bass bin and placing a new horn on top and making it a 2 way. I think this is the Jubscala? If I go that route that would negate all the upgrades I previously mentioned. I love the journey so maybe making incremental steps is the best way? but not most cost effective?
  14. It really seems like the tweeter and the mid are quieter on the quieter speaker. Itā€™s 7-10 dbs different using the meter on my phone. Holding it right next to the opening. And sitting the phone in side the horn and letting it measure. So yeah I can switch the crossovers and see.... i have to say . I switched out my 45 tube amp with my diy ACA which is only 6 watts and itā€™s really beautiful sounding even with the mid matched levels. Iā€™m super excited.
  15. Ok how about this....One side is quieter that the other. Iā€™m guessing that a 40 year old crossover needs replacing? Iā€™ll get some close ups. @Heaterman thanks! Iā€™ll reach out.
  16. Louder like the the balance is off towards one speaker. I flipper them to make sure it wasnā€™t my amps or something like the room. The one with the grill still on is louder. Go figure. Iā€™m gonna stat another thread to discus some of the suggestions started in my two other threads and figure out my plan of action.
  17. some pics.... i think one is louder that the other. one grill off but i'll remove both. Gotta walk the pup. ugh.
  18. Itā€™s those. They were clean and in good shape. I like the guy. The grills were tacked on. It felt right. 1350$ and a half tank of gas.
  19. Got them. Driving home. Stay tuned
  20. hey I'm going to check out a pair of La Scalas, I think from the 60's. I researched a little but anymore advice on what to look for? or beware of? thanks!

Any one have an idea on the price to ship coast to coast. I'm in California but traveling on the east coast for a few weeks. Curious what kind of deal I'd have to find to make it worth it.

    .

I have iso on ALL of my speakers and subs. I live and listen on a suspended floor on joists above a garage. If I was on a slab I would not choose to decouple. I would suggest the sub ones for your chorus. Iā€™ve placed my heresy 3 on other ones that looked wobbly but work and completely stable.
  24. I have to say yes. But sometimes I questioning if itā€™sā€rightā€ or the best it can be. I have been doing lots of experimenting and realizing that I listen comfortably 75-80 average dbs. Less than 8 feet away. I have been pushing it to see if I can listen louder and what my amps are capable of. I also have a powered sub. All of my amps I can average between 85-90 and itā€™s too loud. On another forum some amp builder is telling me itā€™s because of distortion not loudness. My best experiences, most engaging, are when Iā€™m listening at lower volumes, and really present with the music. Not when iā€™m Peaking out at concert volumes.
  25. i have a 2 watt 45amp and a 300b 8 watt amp. i never use the 300b because e 2 watts seems to be enough. the only reason I question it is because I read forums and they tell me I need more power.
