I'd check your connections on your separates - sounds like you have L and R switched somewhere.

That was my first thought so I double checked all the connections & they are "properly" connected: R to R and L to L. That's why I asked about others listening to "So What." Perhaps the "new to me" SS amp has its internals reversed. I have not had a SS amp in my system in heaven knows how long. Or perhaps just the amp shifting the soundstage based on its design; it's subtle but very noticeable to me.

  2. Dumb question and I think I know the answer, but would someone please listen to "So What" on Kind of Blue and tell me which toward side Miles tends to be standing? He's been toward the right on my tubed pre/amp set up, but I plugged in a SS amp and he moved to the left. I have an integrated placing him toward the right, so which on side does anyone else have him?

    Thanks in advance.

A few years ago I had a job interview at Harman. I got to speak with their chief amplifier designer, so I asked him what he does differently when designing a consumer amp for Harman Kardon vs. a pro amp for Crown vs. an audiophile amp for Mark Levinson. He answered that the circuits were the same, he would just choose parts that were appropriate for each application -- e.g., 1% resistors for Levinson vs. 5% for Harman Kardon, bigger heat sinks for Crown, etc.

This is a reason Shindo sounds good (to some); open it and it looks pretty mundane. But it is the right part for the right application; synergy.

Cable directionality? Yes, it has to do initially with the ground end. But then, as you use your brand new cable, it breaks in in THAT position, and using it reverse kinda screws the break in, and it has to be done all over again (not a big deal, and no it won't destroy the cable, obviously, but the cable will not sound at its best for a while. Again, some cables can be more sensitive to this, depending on the geometry and materials used. That's what your friend was scared about. Ask him. Again, if for you cables don't make a difference, you will dismiss this as foolish. Your loss, if you ask me, not your friend being an idiot).

I was with you until this. The electrons mess with the directionality of the cable?

And no, his friend is being an idiot. He was fooled with the ground rod; where do you think your house ground ultimately terminates? A ground rod outside your house as well as at the power station.

  5. Can you tell I'm moving away from headphones? A very nice sounding tubed headphone amp.

-Transformer coupled or transformerless (OTL) output

-Two inputs: one miniplug and one RCA.

    -Two front headphone jacks

-Polarity switch on the power supply (IMHO, no sonic difference)

-Separate power supply with selectable polarity inversion

    -Tubes: 2 EL84 type, 1 12AX7 type (currently Sovtek & JJ Tesla)

There is a selectable feedback switch on the rear of the unit which is always on, but momentarily selectable to off. Again, I have never heard any sonic difference.

The difference between the OTL and transformer-coupled is obvious: with the transformer setting, bass loses fullness and the treble becomes slightly harsher; the music becomes more “aggressive.” Switch it to OTL and the sound becomes warmer and more natural, with slightly less gain.

The are no sonic issues and it is a delight to use with its adjustable settings. There is a bump to the upper left faceplate. It is deceivingly heavy due to its transformers; the power supply weighs three pounds and the head unit about seven.

$250 including shipping to you in the lower 48. Please email any questions. Thanks.

Funny people get this wrong all the time…. The reason some cables will have a direction indicator is to let you know which end of the cable has the shield connected to signal ground so you know to use that end on the low impedance output source when driving the next components input for best external noise rejection.

I triple dog dare you to post this statement on an Audiogon forum!

Sorry for the breech of dog dare etiquette.

  7. The ball may be deformed, but your barrel is in serious need of cleaning. Try this:

    https://www.zoro.com/flex-hone-tool-bc214120ao-flex-hone-2250-572mm-bore-8-oal-120-grit-aluminum-oxide-ao-bc214120ao/i/G9933281/?recommended=true

You'll need to rig an 18" extension to chuck it into your drill, but after you hone the cylinder wall, vacuum it out, coat the walls with cutting oil (ensuring the ball is lubed as well), let it soak, and then try loading a primer and few grains of powder.

Then as we say in the south: hold my beer; what's the worst that could happen?

But seriously, that bore needs to be smoothed & descaled.

Not many of those left. 😕 So often I wish I had paid better attention.

Oh, I think there are more than a few around:

    https://www.armiesoftn.org

They may be able to put you in touch with an artillery squad in your area. I know there used to a fair contingent of re-enactors around Cookeville.

I'll wager Georgia has a gray army as well. Northern states, not so much...

  9. Finally found some specs on the unit:

    Class A, triode
    Output power: 14 watts x 2 channels.
Extended frequency range C-core audio output transformers.

    Specifications:

    Vacuum tubes: 2A3 x 4, 6SN7 x 2, 12AU7x2.
    Output power:14w x 2 channels.
    Input sensitivity:480mv.
    Input impedance:100kΩ .
    Harmonic distortion: <0.05%.
    Frequency response: 8HZ-65KHZ -1dB.
    S/N ratio: 90dB.

  10. Fully differentially balanced, the CAD-120S MkII offers both RCA single-ended and XLR balanced inputs to match any associated equipment. Front panel meters continually monitor the bias current to the tubes. A huge power supply provides plenty of current storage to handle the peak demands of music. It can be switched on the fly from triode mode (Class A) at 60 watts per channel to ultra-linear mode (Class AB) at 120 watts per channel.

The unit has no sonic or cosmetic issues. The Gold Lion KT88 have about 200 hours as do the upgraded GE “glow dome” 6SN7s. The switches and all contacts were just cleaned.

This unit was sent to Cary and upgraded from a MkI to a MkII. All changes were made but the face plate was not changed, an expense that would add nothing to the sonics. Correspondence from Cary confirming same is included.  Includes manual, power cord and original packing from Cary.

$2500 plus shipping which will be pricey due to its 65 pound weight. Figure $100 to $200, depending upon distance from middle Tennessee. Free local pickup is fine. Please email any questions.

  11. You know you have too much stuff when you cannot find anywhere other than the floor to place a piece of equipment… time to move some things out.

Raysonic was a company designing in Canada with product manufactured in China. It is an uncommon model offered by Raysonic running a quartet of 2A3s in push-pull triode mode putting out 14 watts. This beast is all transformers tipping the scales at 72 pounds.

This was the den system, not my main listening system. It sounds amazing and works perfectly. There are no sonic, electronic or cosmetic issues of which I am aware. This unit is 9 out of 10 cosmetically and looks new from the front. There is a very small paint scratch on one of the transformers and some light swirls in the transformers’ paint finish. It will work with relatively inefficient speakers due to its power output.

The amp comes with the original Raysonic 2A3 tubes which are still strong, upgraded NOS 6SN7 tubes and NOS 12AU7 tubes.

There is no owner's manual, but it includes the full functional remote. It will be shipped inside the original worn but secure triple boxes. The tubes will be shipped in a separate box.

$1000 plus shipping to you which will be pricey due to its 72 pound weight. Figure a minimum of $100 and closer to $200 to the West coast. Free local pickup is fine. Please email any questions.

Yeah if you don't know a chemist for something really crafty, my hunch is to figure out how much libation supply you have and call some buddies to get it tipped.  Anything thermal and you might hose the structure and make yourself a schrapnel-generator.

Grindstone has the right idea: figure out how much libation supply you have and call some buddies to get it tipped.  I mean, when was the last time your buddies got to say "Hold my beer & watch this" around a cannon?
