  1. Hmmm. He apologized to me and I didn't even ask. I still think he's a nice guy with a vast amount of fascinating knowledge, if a bit on the high strung side. I've quite a few high-maintenance friends, but I find the maintenance well worth it. Anyway, nobody showed him the door in, nor the door out. I note you have two turntables. Is one for 78's or what's the deal? Dave
  2. You are correct, sir. I've not been to Bob's. The modified Cornies are Mike's. Bob had done some mods to his La Scala's he is going to annunciate and elucidate. Slip of the pen, and brain. Dave
  3. DBFLASH: As you may have noticed, I don't much take the bait. However, I don't even know what you are talking about here. You sounded fine to me... Anyway, I CAN tell you that one of Mike's mods was to replace the leads from the xover to woofer with pure silver wire. About 12.00 worth, I think he said. However, he did another thing or two at the same time and isn't sure whether it is all of the above or more one than another. Perhaps he know more now and will join us here after work or whatever. Dave
  4. Let me clarify what my admittedly less-than-MH (or almost any audiophile) ears heard. It was the tight, present, controlled and well-balanced bass that differed from mine and other Cornwall's I've heard. I'll leave it to others to comment on the mid and treble. Probably need to get Mike Walters and Bob in hear for this. I'll send them a note later... Dave
  5. >But I personally have never had a run in with another member besides him. Can you say this about Kelly ?? I think not !! Since you elected to throw one last barb, I am going to throw in one last dove. While I forget exactly what it was, Kelly once tossed what appeared to be a bag of s*** my way. However, in virtual land, you can really tell what's in the bag without looking. I asked for clarification as to whether he really thought I was stone deaf (not what was really suggested, but I forget...). He both apologized and clarified. I've found him quite the gentleman both off and on list when approaced properly. He inhabits lofty realms of audio discrimnation, a place I am glad he does and glad I do not. I am certain that to his ears, he is pretty much always correct. To deny your own thoughts is to court insanity. I do not envy his position...but I certainly understand it. Outtie... Dave
  6. Ken: No, the amp isn't back up yet. Spike said he'd take a look at it at the meet and tell me just what I've done. Perhaps he can fix it on the spot? One can hope... ;-> Since the tubes all light, I suppose an output transformer could be the culprit. Lord, I hope not. Dave
  7. JT-Love that VU meter anim! Is it real time? :-> I can almost hear the music from your listening room... Dave
  8. While relatively new here, I've been on listservs since the BITNET days. It only took a brief scan to see what is up here. Briefly, there are two kinds of listeners, music oriented and equipment oriented. These are left and right brain dominant types. In my case, I am testably precisely in the middle. Makes me jack of all trades, master of none. The music oriented types, and I know many of these in my recording life, may have 10 different recordings of a given piece and are able to tell you exactly which over held fermata ruins X, and which dalliance with a g minor chord makes another so special. When the DFW Klipsch group meets, the equipment head listens for about five seconds, then begins to stalk the room turning his ears this way and that...he's on the trail of something. It's the same response of the extreme music head in the opposite direction. Both these orientations are necessary and useful in our hobby. However, it can often be like trying to have a mixer with Vulcans and Farengi. Folks with Kelly's level of hearing in equipment matters are an extremely rare phenomona. It must be lonely up there. Frustration with the rest of us is understandable. I for one believe he is probably capable of identyfing tube types at -20db with Myron Floren on the turntable. However, neither that nor the ability to critique a performance of the Mahler 10th is in my present or future. That's cool, because I have others to help me with those things. That's why I am here. One of the things I've learned on listservs is to treat "virtual" insults as the "virtual" things they are. Save the sulphur for your boss or the person who steals your parking space. As for me, I blissfull listen to my K'horns wired with RS's best cable, my VT-70i, my Rotel TT with SME and Grado, and don't hear a thing except the sweetest music this side of heaven...except when the DFW Forum barbarians show up and start pacing from speaker to speaker! :-> You guys have a nice day... Dave
  9. Bob Lemker will host the DFW Hornheads 23 February. We are expecting to experience his ALK lauded Cornwall mods, as well as try to help Mike Walters determine just what it is that he has doen to his that makes them sound so much like K'horns. Of course, the MBS-3 will be there to try to educate CD freaks about high res, and LP freaks about keeping 'em safely in their jackets except for the most critical listening. Should be fun. If you are in the DFW area and not on the mailing list for the group, let me know. Dave
  10. You know, I am not sure that the entire SS vs VT issue is a matter of fatigue. Certainly when it comes to absolute accuracy from DC to light SS probably whens. OTOH, those laser prints from a few years ago looked awesome at first, then would kind of get on your nerves with their perfect focus and extreme detail. The soft clipping of VT's and that warmth seems to do for recordings what a great hall does for an orchestra. My Denon sounds great with the Heresies for short periods of time...but I find myself heading for the VT70i and 'horns when I get focused and really want to enjoy. Dave
  11. OK, so what is this Foreplay thing (no jokes, please). You've got my interest. My ears are more attuned to music than equipment. Dave

  13. >I have actually seen my wife staring at my amp when the lights are down low. Interesting. If my wife caught me staring at my amp when the lights are down low, I'd be hearing a ringing sound in my head for a week. :-> Dave
  14. MH: I rarely used the vacuum hold except for off-center holes and warped discs. In these instances, vacuum hold made playable discs otherwise hardly listenable. Of course, weights do well for off center holes, but having the edges of a warped disc nice and flat certainly improves the sound. Couldn't tell you if it "deadened" it any as warped discs sound awful without something to flatten them. I could (then or now) see no advantage in vacuum hold for nice, flat, heavy discs of quality. Dave
  15. Hmmm. Must have hit cancel, as I replied here and it just seemed to disappear. Anyway, some of you may recall that I refer to my spouse as the "PAW" for "Perfect Audiophile Wife." Though significantly younger than me and raised on CD's, she definitely prefers phono. I say phono as opposed to vinyl because she comes home with boxes of mixed vinyl and shellac. Loves old jazz 78's. Most significantly, she GAVE UP THE BEDROOM to my 'horns because it was the only room in the house with corners. Nothing but audio in there except for the bed. I'll post pix if I ever take the time to figure out how it's done. She also fully supports my research into DAAS (digital-analog audio servers) and my location recording habit. In fact, she's wanted to take off and do a trip through East Texas and Lousiana to record folk and gospel in the wild. A keeper, I think. No idea how I got this lucky... Dave
  16. Presume by "interference" you mean phase issues. As there is only a single audio signal, there is nothing to be out of phase. Even using a stereo cartridge yielding dual mono, the OOP info is too minute to be detectable. Nevertheless, mono records generally sound better to me either from a mono, stereo wired for summed output, or at least the amp mono switch on. And yes, I've a LOT of 78's and mono LP's that sound better than many modern recordings. Piano in particular sounds best in mono, many other solo instruments as well. Dave
  17. >Is Luxman worth looking at? SOME Luxman tables are superb. They built a few models with vacuum hold down that were truly excellent. I had one of these in Singapore. Of course, that adds a layer of potential failure. They also built some fine tables without the vacuum hold. Luxman electronics vary from good to high end. Dave

  20. I assume what you are looking at is Cornwalls and Chorus. I am a Heritage type, so I really don't know much about the Chorus line. However, they have a large following. Having stated my bias, the Cornwalls are a perfect match for tube amplification, and can be place against the wall...though, of course, your room acoustics may dictate placement. I THINK the Chorus is significantly less efficient than any of the Heritage series. Anyway, you should get a lot of response on this. Dave
  21. Sounds like you answered your own question. Dave
  22. Mine's an Denon AVR-3000, last top of the line Pro Logic before digital. Just hooked up a Sony P-4300 TT to it with an AT cartridge. Hardly state of the art, but the results with the Heresies are imminently listenable, with no problems tracebable to the amp. I don't do serious listening up there, but I a may do a bit more now that I've heard just how decent it can sound. Think I'll keep it... Dave
  23. >Something to ponder, I guess. Indeed. Do so. Children are much closer to these things than we hardened, skeptical adults. To get away (but not far in spirit) from quotes of religious leaders, etc., one of the great SciFi writers once said "The universe is not only queerer than we imagine, it is queerer than we CAN imagine." All the best, Dave
  24. I would concur about Yamaha, Denon, and other current and past builders of qaulity SS amps. To those of us non-equipment freaks, a top quality SS amp sounds great with the right stuff. I can tell a difference between tube and SS, but not so great as to ruin my day or cause me to turn my nose up at good SS. I run a big Denon 3000 series (I forget the exact model right now) in my HT setup, with Heresies L&R, Frasier Super Midget in the center, and RS LX-5's in the rear. I enjoy listening to music on it, and think the sound is both accurate and musical. At least, I don't here anything wrong coming out of the Heresies that can be attributed to the amp. Dave
