Are you at all handy...like, can you snap Legos together? If so I'd suggest a PicanPi streamer and Volumio.
First Up - Volumio
https://volumio.com/en/get-started/
IT ONLY TAKES 10 MINUTES FOR GREAT SOUND Install Volumio on microcomputers such as Raspberry Pi or ASUS Tinkerboard, and control it directly on your phone, computer or tablet.
As for the PecanPi they sound awesome with dual Burr Brown DACs and a linear power supply...just slightly out of your budget. So for about 1/2 the price you can build your own
Right out of the box ready
Networked music player with DAC and headphone amp Ultra-high fidelity, plug-and-play, ready-to-go, high-resolution music streamer with built-in DAC and headphone amplifier. Control music wirelessly using your phone, tablet, or computer.
Ready to play in minutes

Or roll your own...same DAC you just have to assemble the parts

@orchardaudio is a member here I'm sure he would be happy to advise via the Contact Us link from his site.
Read up on those and see if it does not make more sense.
Thanks for the mention, if anybody has questions feel free to ask.

Another great customer review:
“The PecanPi DAC is a wonderful addition to the RaspberryPi. The soundstage and bass are outstanding with this DAC. I have used several Allo and HiFiberry hats this clearly beats all of them.”Full review text:

For the most part the article is correct from a general rule-of-thumb perspective.
That was the aim.

Good to hear your all set up! .....
-- I'm in the need of a new great dac and possibly a streamer/media player setup myself - so I thought I would head on over and take a look at your website , I'm not very familiar with Pecan Pi and that approach -- 🙂
have a great day!
With PecanPi you have two options:
The USB DAC is a good option if you have a dedicated computer or steamer (with USB output) already. For example if you have a Bluesound Node 2i you can bypass its internal DAC which is known to have poor performance.
The Streamer is a networked device. It connects to your network and you control it from your phone/tablet/computer. It can play files from your NAS and USB storage deivces. It can also play internet radio, and work with streaming services like Tidal or Qobuz. The steamer can also act as a DLNA/UPnP and AirPlay rendered.
Both devices have an integrated class AB headphone amplifier

I got my avatar and profile all set up. Thank you. It looked like I had to reach a certain number of posts before it let me do it.

I have had this question asked so many times. I wrote an article to address this.
The article gets you an understanding of how amplifier power affects loudness (sound pressure level) at your listening position.
This calculator is also a very good tool to use to figure it out:

$1500 for a pair of 10 watt chip amps? What am I missing?
They are 150Wrms (300Wpeak).
There are no "chips", it is my own custom design no Hypex, Ncore, ICE, or any other off the shelf class d chips.
The amps use Gallium Nitride (GaN) transistor. Other amps with this technology cost way more.
I believe the price is very competitive for the level of performance and power that the amps offer.

Hello,
About seven years ago, I was looking for an audio system for my house. At that time, I was not able to find anything that delivered the performance I was looking for at the price that I wanted to pay.
As an engineer, I thought: "Why can't I design my own?"
Two years later, I had a DAC and two 25W amplifiers. Friends and family would comment about how great the music sounded.
In 2017, I launched Orchard Audio (www.orchardaudio.com) with the hope of showing the world that excellent sound quality does not necessarily equate to spending many thousands of dollars.
I am an electrical engineer and have a wide variety of experience in different industries.

@rplace Thanks. I don't see those options on my account page. They are probably disabled for new members. Will check back later.

Welcome to the Forum, nice to see you here.
Thank you. Is there a good place to do intro post?
Also, how do I add an avatar image I don't see the option.

This is one of my favorites, really determines how good your low end is.

Just a heads up to anyone keeping track. This seems like a great little package, providing both DIY version as a DAC only for Pi or a complete streamer with dual mono Burr Brown chips, XLR and RCA. Lots of software options. I have a Roon version inbound. Pecan is my favorite kind of pie

Thanks for the purchase and mentioning my product here.
If anybody has questions feel fee to ask.

Instead of Volumio use Ropieee (www.ropieee.org). That will gives you a very good Roon endpoint.
The PecanPi DAC is Roon Tested by the way.
