  1. Thanks Dave, Yes, I do feel very lucky to have musicians like them as friends and even teachers. When they play, it's magic enough to get me (as well as the other fans you heard) to stay out late on a Tuesday night and pay the price at work on Wednesday. It would really be cool to hear what the cube can do in the same club- I'll bet it would be killer! Here is what I used: http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/h4/index.php Just a little mastering with the Sonar plugins and viola! You can record in formats ranging from mp3 (good for lectures and such) up to 96/24. The ones you heard were recorded at 44.1/24, and I did a couple at 96/24 as well. The nice thing is, you can also plug some condenser mikes into this puppy and it supplies phantom power. When recording a bass track, I usually get a bunch og RFI into the pickups, especially from computer monitors. With this thing, I can load in a stereo track and add tracks, like the bass, while sitting on the floor in my livingroom away from walls with electrical lines and monitors...it's much cleaner. Another litle advantage is that I could play something recorded in 96/24 without lugging my computer into my KHorn room by plugging it into the preamp! Which reminds me, I want to download a few more of your files and play them that way...
  2. Yes, I tend to come and go in spurts, depending on time and what projects I'm involved with. I need to loose my day job. Problem is, I have an expensive hobby! I'm back to playing the bass with some friends and a bit of keyboards, so it's rehearsals and then recording, mastering, etc.. I listened to the Foster recordings and enjoyed them- very smooth sounding. But it was on headphones, so later this week I'll burn them to CD and listen on the SET and Horns.I'll download more of your files as well. I am taking a recording seminar at a local studio, which means that I am able to compare the sounds of different mikes and preamps that I normally don't have access to.I found myself drawn the sound of some tube mikes.....must be something to putting a preamp stage right up in there close to the source that works well. I you get a chance, download the file that's linked in my Jazz Lover's post. It is a live recording, but I think you'll be surprised at what was used to make it.
  3. I primarily listen to jazz, jazz fusion, progressive rock, etc.. It don't get better than that! Jazz, being made up of a good number of acoustic instruments, sounds great played on tube equipment. I really like the sound of SET for jazz and classical. There are times when I want to crank the volume a bit more than SET can handle in which case I use the Scott 222D. It can handle those intense moments (like the climax of Close to the Edge, or the bass pedal moments on early Genesis...or even those killer bursts in the Firebird) with a bit more ease. It's amazing how loud 4 watts can get with Klipsches :-)
  4. Hey Dave! Congrats! It should be interesting. I'm downloading your Foster file now. Have you retired the Wami?
  5. I manage to float in and out here from time to time. You might remember that I mentioned a local jazz band I see who are just killer musicians. Well, in this post, I will bring them to you via a downloadable link. Ron gave me his permission to share this live performance. Unfortunately, there is a bit of clipping going on in the bass. Any guesses how this recording was done? Here's the link: https://download.yousendit.com/R3oyWUh0bThZY1JFQlE9PQ Good for 6 more days. The band is the Ron Kobayashi Trio with vocalist Debi Ebert, and they perform at Steamers in Fullerton the first Tuesday of each month. If you are in the neighborhood, let me know, we'll hook up! BTW This is a wav file []
  6. Yeah, the crossover change was planned. The Amp was unplanned [] I gotta say, the sound is growing on me. I will ask my friend Todd to bring over his Don Allen SET for comparison. I wish we had a pair of VRDs as well, and perhaps the VRDs will be my ultimate goal....
  7. Yeah, my right ear took a while to get over the trip. I've started doing some listening, but not too long before the new purchase, I changed the squawker attenuation on the crossover as most of the new stuff is recorded bright, so it's gonna be harder to tell what's the amp and what's the new setting... but I'll get some done soo, hopefully.
  8. Glen's description is correct. I left the KHorns on the shorter wall for a few days and the loss of bass was too much, so even it the French door thing was not an issue, I would have moved them back as I did. What's funny about the imaging issue is that I believe it's not just the room, but the recording as well. Years ago when I lived in Chicago, I had the horns in the basement, and I remember listening to Chicago (the band) and just closing my eyes and the music didn't seem to come from two speakers- it filled the room. When I play the same music, I can hear the same imaging. For some reason, horn music seems to image better. Maybe part of it is because engineers in those days used hard panning more than those of today (meaning some instruments might have been placed in extreme left or right positions). I'll be doing some more listening...maybe it's time for another get together [] As to the drop in some of the lower frequencies, or upper bass because of the out of corner position, there is some very deep resonance now and it sounds pretty good to my ears. Maybe I'll get tired of it. One of these days, I wanna hear some LaScallas []
  9. A few months ago, I had a few hornheads from Audio Asylum over along with Bruce Edgar, who immediately noticed that my imaging sucked because my horns were very far apart (like about 20 ft). We placed them on the shorter wall and everyone agreed that the imaging was right on. But after they left, and I started living with them that way, aside from the fact that their placement was impractical because of some French doors that the TV would block, and I watch music DVDs, I noticed a drop in the bass response. I suppose that my ears got used to the big hole in the middle and din't mind that, but if you loose the bass, what would I need KHorns for? So I moved them back. But I moved one speaker out of the corner, though still along the longer wall, but closer together by about 4 feet. They don't look as good and still have that massive bass, though on some frequencies it is just a bit less from the out of the corner-horn, yet on some other frequencies, it's almost as if the extra space boosts that bass range. Over all, it's better. I've retained the great K-Horn bass and improved the imaging. And if you look at them from the couch, they don't look too bad (till you get up and walk towrds the side of the room where the moved horn is. But the wife is not complaining, so neither am I [8-|]
  10. I would have loved that! Next time I go somewhere, I'll post it. Just think, we could have tried out the amp on the JubScalas. And I didn't mind the cold one bit (except while walking). It was in teh 90s here today and already I miss the colder weather. I guess as I get older, I can't stand the heat as well. I'm sure mom-in-law wants us to see her again, so another trip is very possible. Maybe I'll find another great deal there, like a Marantz 8B for 300 bucks? [8][8][8]
  11. Imagine my surprise when I found it there! OTOH, I had a friend over from Canada and he needed something from a drug store, so I took him to our local one. As we walked through the liquor isle, he froze in his tracks and couldn't believe his eyes, "Alcochol in a drug store?!" he said. Hey Islander, where are you? We were in Victoria. We could have had a Klipsch gathering, hehe!
  12. I missed a few good concerts, so I was the dud...last fall John McLaughlin toured...missed him. This past Friday Return to Forever played in LA, but we just returned from vacation in Victoria, Canada, so that didn't work out...I'm afraid to look to see who else will be around that I'll miss [:S]
  13. Hey Dave! I'm thinking it's really an integrated amp/line stage. Those are three inputs, no phono. I'm not really familiar with these tubes, but it's got a pair of 6P3P (6L6G) 4 6N3 and a 6E2. The 6E2 has what looks like a tuning lamp acting as a power meter...looks like it's a cosmetic thing...
  14. White gloves are to the left of the amp..
  15. It even comes with white gloves for tube roll...I mean changin, LOL! Oooops, posting pics is not very intuitive with this software!
  16. Well, not really Canadian, it was made in China. I was just in Canada visiting my mother-in-law (for the first time) and while up there, I walked into a London Drugs Store. Now up there, they have a drug store, and in the drug store is a little audio section where they even have Klipsch bookshelf and floor standing speakers. On display was a Vuum Amp . I had never heard of it, but there it was on a shelf with other discounted items and the tag said $899 slashed to $399. Wow! This is more than 50% off. Even mother-in-law said this is very unusual! I went to they audio person, and I believe he was the manager and asked him about the amp. Hew said that when they reduced the price, he bought one to power his LaScalas [Y] and said he loves the sound. But I still didn't want to just jump in, so I googled the amp. As you can see, not much info is available on the web site. But the Canuck Audio forum was buzzing about it, and that made me pull the trigger. I went back and the manager was off, but another young guy was in his place. I asked him about the amp as well, and he said he loves it. When the price was lowered, he bought one to power his (non Klipsch) speakers. How can I go wrong, Eh? What's interesting about this is that it looks like the Chinese are making multiple use chassis... Take a look at the Dared MP 7 . I wonder how similar they are. I cannot find a schematic for it, and I don't want to open the bottom until the warranty runs out. I like the sound, but I cannot fully hear it as my ear has been popping after the plane ride. I did have my friend Todd over and he gave a thumbs up. We need to compare this amp again to his Don Allen Mono Blocks... Even if I didn't like it, I figured I could do some parts upgrades and get it to sound even better, but for now, I'm gonna let my ears adjust.
  17. Hi Glen, It was the Rite of Strings CD: http://www.amazon.com/Rite-Strings-Stanley-Clarke/dp/B000000QIH DVD: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00081U6PA?tag=pageturners0c&link_code=as3&creativeASIN=B00081U6PA&creative=373489&camp=211189
  18. For some reason I held out on buying that one. I recently found it on SACD and love it! SACD is the next best thing to analog. [] But hey, It's John McLaughlin, and I think I have just about everything he did. Same with Al Dimeola...
  19. Once you hear better than 16/44.1 (Red Book) you won't wanna look back! Even 24/44.1 sounds better. SACD is 176.4 , so that's even sweeter!
  20. LOL! He was one of the first yelling to get them out of here! Ithink he will soon be here with us telling us how great his Klipsch _______ are!
  21. Thanks Mark, That guy was Todd Brown, I think he said he met you at a show. He was one of the partnes who started THE SHOW. Anyway, the reason he bought those D100s was to power the lower portion of the Emerald Physics, which he bought recently http://www.emeraldphysics.com/intro.htm and they require bi-amping, so he was one of the ones who suggested we boot those out. The Don Allens were for the horn portion.
  22. AACs?? My brain is not working this morning,,, That Dennon mod is sweet, but it is too pricey for my pocketbook. Todd also picked up a Marantz modded by Don Allen for $500, but it's only a CDP, IIRC. We haven't compared that one yet. Maybe I'll have to do a CD/Multi-player shootout. The Arcam has some design deficiencies, such as the fact that to play SACD in 2 Channel mode, I need the monitor to be turned on to make the switch. It defaults to multi-channel. Also, there is a stereo output, but it doesn't give you the hi-def of SACD or DVD-A, you have to get that off the LF & RF outputs. Anyway, let's plan on that maybe for next month?
  23. Glen, Too bad I didn't know you were thinking about a CDP when you were here. We were running Todd's modded Dennon, which is an expensive beast, prolly about $3-4K. I have an Arcam DV 137, which is a multi player. It's not as detailed as the Dennon, but at less than half the price, the difference is too slight to justify the expense of the larger beast. The Red Book section is warmer on the modded Dennon, but the SACD is very close. If you wish to hear it, email me, we can get together for that...
  24. Neo, When I first auditioned My KHorns in a Chicago suburban dealer, I tried to save a few bucks and auditioned the Las, Belles and Heresy. The KHorn's bass was the undisputed king. I had to have them. That was around 79 or 80, maybe 81. I have lived with my choice and have NEVER regretted it.I cannot be happy with less massive bass, one that to my ears is very natural. I think your room size is probably more suited ofr the KHorn than mine is. On my long wall, there's about 21 feet between the KHorns, 8-9 ft on the short wall. If you saw the post about the So Cal Hornhead thing I hosted, you'll see that I had them on the long wall. I've been in this house for about 2 years. Before that, I had a condo where there was the same separation of 20 ft between the horns. I guess I've gotten used to the poor imaging over all those years. We threw the KHorns on the shorter wall and then there was imaging. But I did notice a slight drop in the bass. Due to the room's layout, I will probably put them back on the longer wall and maybe look for a center channel. They block a set of doors my wife wants to open once in a while... One thing which benefitted my KHorns a lot was replacing the stock crossovers with the ALKs, and Bruce Edgar (a horn designer himself) said that to his ears, the crossovers have overcome a shortcoming of the KHorn. I also dampened the squawkers with Dynamat and rope caulk. If ya want the bass, go for the horns, son!
