  1. Hello Khorn58, Thanks for your sharing. Amazing, what a huge caps! I never see anything like this before. It seems to be better than the WE or ttc caps I have. It answer my query that Klipsch did use high end parts once upon a time. No wonder why it was so famous at the 40-50. What are the three parts? coils? I really want to replicate one myself. The 58 Khorn has different crossover, does it have a transformer by that time. I really envy at your treasure, good luck in your search for another 51Khorn. Tubelion
  2. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3284&item=3020074450&rd=1 Untested for this pair of 600V 8mf Western Electric oil caps. What a price! I can't bid up to it. Tubelion
  3. Hello AL, Thanks. And I agree with you 3619 is of much better built and should sound better. Tubelion
  4. Hello AL, So if the T2a or even T4a is default set at 3-0, so if I resoldered back to 3-0, then I don't need a swamping resistor. In the past , you mentioned the 3-0 and 4-x have only 0.6db difference at 6.8 and 6.2 db attenuation, so the difference of voltage drop is small, the change of crossover frequency should again be small if switching between these two settings. Thanks in advance Tubelion
  5. Hi john, T4a and T2a are not very different, T4a has two taps only, no option. T2a has more taps and is used in more models, not only heresay. the 3-0 connection in T4a should be no different to sam tap setting in T4a, it is my guess. Anyway, the sound performance is better every day in the run in period, this one is for sure, I don't worry too much, but would like to experiment different tapping. As always AL gives very interesting and useful infomation, the crossover ferquency will change, but the real question is: is it significant or just a matter of minor change that the crossover is forgiveful enough that we can't hear the change. Regards Tubelion
  6. Dear AL, Thanks again for the valuable information. So if the T4a owner can use 3619, what taps setting you would recommend? Is there any setting that does not required a swamping resistor ? Thanks again Tubelion
  7. Hello AL, Thanks for your information. I will try , so I should connect the 5-0 with a resistor 10ohm, something like 1W. Is it OK? The original connection is 3-0 in T4a, so why is the 5-0 instead of 3-0 be connected by a resistor? If I am not a fans of vintage staff like oil caps etc, I would have tried your network first. You are really an expert of these crossovers, and so kind and generous to give helpful information. I have tried 4-x first as you noticed I don't use a coil, and with more bass, I should attenuate less on the mids, it is what I think. Thanks again AL Tubelion
  8. BillyRyan It will be fun to search JBL driver, a brand new target for me. Will altec or WE drivers work? Thanks Tubelion
  9. Hello trey, If autotransformer is good, L-pad is bad. Why does the newer design use L-pad? Thanks Tubelion
  10. Please help to ask Edgar if the horn can fit the K55 without a adaptor. Thanks Tubelion
  11. BillyRyan, Thanks again for the information. I am impressed with your direction on improving the midrange, I certainly will try if it is not too difficult to install the wood horn. Can they make the horn fitting with K55? A use of adaptor is kind of troublesome and may affect the sound. If as said they design the horn for klipsch users, why not make it fit? Thanks Tubelion
  12. My latest type A crossover is using 3619 transformer to replace the T4A and Western Electric oil caps. My last post gave more stress on the WE oil caps, but now I think the 3619 has more immediate effect on the sound "alteration". I heard the bass or better mid bass has dramatic change that I can't explain the difference simply by changing caps where I have the bass directly connected, as I don't use coil in my circuit. I almost forget the 3619 which currently is using 4-x taps connection which has a less attenuation than the T4a 3-0 setting. Then the mid and midbass are hotter. This is the immediate audible change. As my crossover is still in the run in period, I am not going to play around the settings now. I understand few type A user have the 3619 installed, but anyone out there has experiment the settings of the transformer in respect to Type A crossover? Thanks Tubelion
  13. Hello Billy Ryan, Thanks for your useful information. Why is it 300Hz ? It is different from the present horn and will it match with the bass and tweeter? The price 150 is very reasonable for a wood horn. I hope you will post your information along your search. Good luck. Tubelion
  14. Hey guys, I learn that the new drivers does not need a transformer, it is an upgrade to me. Trey, If I use Type A and new drivers, does it mean I can use no transformer, and keep the 13 and 2 mf. Hoe to order from your parts dept? website or email please. Thanks Tubelion
  15. Hello BillyRyan, Could you let us know the progress with Mr Edgar? What does the larger driver mean? Are you not going to use K55? Thanks Tubelion
  16. Hello Mike, Thanks, I will try to contact him. A lot of thanks to other guys as well, very informative. Tubelion
  17. Congratulation! I wish I can find one pair made before sixties and ship to Hong Kong. Will you let us see the photo maybe before you polish them Ok? please include the crossover. Tubelion
  18. Hello, Have luck to find nice oil caps? May I ask how to get into the bass compartment to change the cable? How to disconnect the K77 driver from the small horn that I can custom a wood horn? Have you seen the nice 51 Khorn? Thanks Tubelion
  19. Hello, May I have email address of Dr Bruce Edgar? I want to retain the k55V as driver in replacing the horn. Can there wood horn fit the K55V? Thanks Tubelion
  20. Oil caps, tube and horn are of the same era, proven match up for years. Now tube is really hot, some horn is hot, time is coming, oil caps is back. I tried Jensen and audionote oil caps they are good yet expensive, but they not only survive but glowing. Why? Because getting more people like you want the very best, they will afford what can improve the performance, DIY guys are most generous, not many company can afford good quality parts, some reserve oil caps as upgrade only eg Cary. Size is the real issue if price is not a too sensitive concern. The revival of oil caps must eliminate the motor run which give people a false impression that oil caps are no good, but they are not design for audio perpose, I am sad to hear here that Klipsch use whatever oil caps available for their 70ties product. See other topic about the 51 khorn, at that time they use the best. I am also understand some guys use klipsch as AV stuff, without a high end amplifier, its potential is not revealed, won't likely to tell the difference. Try those caps with a lengendary history behind, it can't be wrong, the best oil caps to me is WE or TCC, look at their price at ebay, look at the vintage WE amp with these caps. The audionote 100V copper case and foil caps are certainly good but a bit more expensive than WE, who is better, I am interested to know. The oil caps will help you, dap the horn will help too. 21. Hello Peter, I understand your feeling. I am also guilty of using 10W Jadis 300B which use two WE300B, I bought them when I use other speaker. I always want to have a single tube single ended tube amplifier that I can have better and cleaner sound, much cheaper to run only one 300B too, to the extent, I post a question in the asylum- can I convert my Jadis to run one tube only. Why? Because my Belle needs 3W to driver it, and it is the first watt that really matter. I may buy a 45 amplifier one day. Try it yourself. Tubelion
  22. Hello Khorn58, What a treasure you have , the wood horn and carbinet are stunning pretty, I love to have one though not posssible to find one in asia, too expensive to ship one to Hong Kong. It is always my feeling that the vintage audio gear are much better than modern one, people today are too price orientated, won't pay up to the quality of the work. Your 58 51 Khorn clearly demontrated this point, anyone who want to argue the present 2003 is the best Khorn ever will stop arguing. Just take the oil caps for instance, 51 must a very good caps so difficult to find, in this aspect, they are too size orientated. I wonder if you could show us the crossover as well, it should be a type A , right? It is also my favorite. Thanks so much to have shared with us the beautiful and somehow sexy Khorn, I fall in love with it at the first sight. Tubelion
  23. Do try any audio grade oil cap, from sprague- vitamine Q to western electric. Don't use the motor run. The vitamine Q is real cheap already, 10 dollars you get 2mf five or seven pieces from ebay. New one like audionote 100V is also available at high price, My experience with .47 mf 630V for coupling is very good. I use WE caps with good result. Let us know your result. Tubelion
  24. Hello Marvel, It seems not a DIF for most people, at least to me. If I have an extra horn , I can send it to China, one of my friends owns a wood furniture factory, really nice wood work and professional machine. Would it be a business, certainly not for me? for a pair of nice wood horn, how much will Klipsch owner be happy to buy? If 1000US for a pair, he might do it with solid rosewood. I may want a pair, but right now I prefer to buy one out there if someone has already gone through the design. Thanks Tubelion
  25. Hello, I don't expect so many information out there, I will take some time to search according to your advice. Will someone post your pictures with wood horn? 2300 each!!! is really a big money that I can't afford, how much will the acceptable price for you to have a good replacement wood horn? Thanks very much Tubelion
