  1. Here are the crossovers. (This one either)
  2. They are Altec 2-ways. I built them myself. They are bass reflex corner cabinets tuned to 40hz with 515E drivers. The front is styled after a decorator Cornwall. They have 511b horns and 909-16a compression drivers. Horns are damped with dynamat. Compression drivers have the tangerine phase plugs with loading caps removed and felt installed. They are crossed at 600hz because that is where the phase alignment is right between the drivers. The crossover is a second order with an ALK type circuit utilizing an autoformer and swamping resistor to keep the impeadance constant. They are flat from 40hz up until I can't hear anymore. IMHO they sound wonderful. Certainly good enough for me. Dan
  3. I think I spend more time reading about audio than listening. I'm up late at night when I can't make noise, wishing I could fire up the Hi Fi. Anyone else?
  4. You have helped alot of folks here. Including alot of newbs and lurkers. Thanks for your dedication. It seems like only a few weeks ago that we were congratulating you on 5000! You must have put it into hyperdrive since October. We should all pitch in and get you a liquid cooled keyboard!
  5. What do you guys think of the Pro-ject 1 Xpression? They come with the Sumiko Oyster cart and can be had for $449. Not a double plinth like the MMF-5, but it has a carbon fiber tone arm. Dan
  6. One issue with the Heresy is that the crossover is designed to run the tweeter a little hot. This was done because the Heresy usually sits on the ground. This puts the tweeter well below the listeners ear. All the rest of the heritage line has the tweeter at ear level. The hot tweeter and the poor bass response gives many listeners the impression that the Heresy is harsh. The small mid horn requires that the woofer goes a little higher before the cross point. This means that less music is handled by the horn. Many have experimented with the Heresy's crossover with reported excellent results. Do a search for "John Albright Heresy". You will find some very interesting reading there. There are ways to make the Heresy sound a lot more like it's big brothers. I was happy with my Heresys for a long time and will never sell them, however, I ended up going to bigger horns and will never regret that either. Dan
  7. Tom, What do you have as your main hi-fi now? Dan
  8. My $0.02 Taking a picture on Film is like playing a musical instrument live. No way for error recovery. When done well its art! When done poorly its not. Taking a picture with digital is like playing a musical instrument in the studio. The sound is captured and laid down in some medium where a sound man (Not the original artist) edits, changes the texture and feel until satisfied. when done well, this too is art! When done poorly our high sensitivity speakers don't like it and neither do we. I think there is room in this world for digital photography. But I still appreciate an artist who gets it right without the safety net of the studio OR photoshop. Dan
  9. There is a lot of factors to consider. First they had to sound right. I didn't think that I had the skill to build a folded horn, and I've always liked the sound of a Cornwall, so I figured a bass reflex cabinet would be the way to go. I selected the woofer I was going to build it around before I started on the cabinet. The Altec 515e is a better driver in a bass reflex situation than some of the other, more sought after Altec drivers. I aquired a pair and got to work on the cabinet design. I used the T/S parameters from the Altec users board and started playing with a few different speaker design softwares. They all give slightly different answers and I ended up comprimising. I wanted them to go as low as posible and still be flat. I used the software to optimize the internal volume and tune the size of the port to achive the lowest, flatest response possible with that Altec driver. Belive it or not, the solution was VERY close to the internal volume of a Cornwall cabinet! It had to be tuned to a little higher than a Cornwall and ended up being 40hz. The problem was that I wanted the 511b horn and It would have stuck out the back of a Cornwall sized cabinet. For the 511b to be inside the cabinet had to be deep. A square cabinet would have been the right internal volume and deep enough for the 511b, but would have caused problems with standing waves and also would have been ugly. A solution presented itself, a corner cabinet!! It solved the depth problem, the horn fits nicely. Solved the standing wave problem, and had higher WAF. The front dimensions are similar to the Decorator Cornwall I like so much. (still jealous of Chris Robinsons). and the rest was designed to provide the internal volume required by the software.
  10. I guess the shots get bigger if you click on them. Let me know if this didn't work.
  11. I've had them done for two years. I couldn't be happier.
  12. This is the first test of the crossover.
  13. I hope this works. This is one of the cabinets, propped up in the corner before assembly.
  14. Hmm... Red x Red x Red x I'll try again tonight.
  15. My daughter took the last shot. Not bad for a 7 year old. I generally don't look that tired and grumpy either.
  16. Colter, They are Altec VOTTS with Cornwall / KHorn inspired cabinets. 511b horns damped with dynamat. 909a 16ohm compression drivers with the loading cap removed and felt installed. 515e 16" drivers in a corner style cabinet tuned to 40hz. Crossover is a 2nd order butterworth with part of ALKs constant impeadance design using the autoformer and swamping resistor. Its wired 180 out of phase to compensate for the different planes the drivers reside in. Cross is at 600hz which is where the phase timing is right. 104db 1W 1M. Wood is 5 layer with oak on the outside layers. I wouldn't have been able to do any of this without the help of the members of this board. Some knew they were helping others helped unwittingly. They started like this: Here are the crossovers: They ended up like this: I'm not the best wood worker in the world, but they sound unbelievable. Dan
  17. Colter, 5000 is an amazing number of posts. A little quick math... Just a little under 5 per day for 3 years. Thanks for hanging out and helping to make this forum what it is! By the way this is 100 for me in 3 years. Dan
