  1. HDRBB, I hope the abbreviation is ok. My thankfull reply: "aahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cornwaller P.S. Email me; if you please. american@dawsonppd.com
  2. Jeff, I am sorry that you made the wrong decision--My empathy and sympathy abound..."Instead of getting married again, I will find a woman I hate and buy her a house". COPYRIGHT 1984, GM Younkin, All Rights Reserved. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it, Cornwaller (I never pleasurize)
  3. Hey Guys!! I still don't have an answer to this question; so I'm resurrecting it from the doom of dropping off the first topic page. Cornwaller
  4. Regarding the stain-saving. No stain is ever lost. Think of them as colors of a painters pallet. My last project in volved a color much the same as the "cherry" we're talking about. The original was on Walnut and I had to color match raw birch. When I first started I knew it would be a mother-effer, but after mixing and trying, it was possible to build-up the color I wanted directly on the finished piece. By the way I have been using MinWax stains for about 20 years and it does help to know their properties. Although their formulations have changed since then, they are forgiving as long as you don't use the water based versions. For the final finish I now prefer spray on satin polyurethane. It's made by Velspar. Cornwaller
  5. Jeff, ....EIGHTY-NINE-THOUSAND-DOLLARS?!? I wouldn't pay that much for a new Porsche Carrera! Yes there are speakers out there that are better to some "ears" than others--the WestLake Labs Reference Monitors for example. Every component is hand matched and the best available for the purpose of studio mastering. At least their price if not insane is revenue generating and therefore recoverable. Cornwaller
  6. Just remember....When the word "fragile" appears on a ups package they throw it under-handed!! Actually, the reason for the five foot drop is that they use conveyor belts to move and sort the packages. These conveyors pass by obstructions like their own supports, and corners! If that isn't bad enough some of the conveyors are stacked one on top of the other and the top one maybe 15 feet in the air. Now if one of the packages is put on; or in someother way runs ascew, it hits a support or corner and any thing coming up behind it has the chance of falling a good long way! This is the ups version of carpet bombing. You don't want to be standing below a running conveyor unless you have a cute friend at the Emergency Room. Ergo, you will not want to ship anything with ups that you don't want partially or totally destroyed. That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it! Cornwaller
  7. Keith, If you have "saw dust in your blood" then my proposal will (should) be like falling off a sanded log. If available, go to your nearest Lowes or Home Depot and get their advice on products and techniques. If they steer you wrong they don't sell anymore product. You may also do a search for Homer Formby wood refinishing products and how-to instructions. This is not rocket science and you are more than capable of learning it yourself. Then armed with this info, go to a garage sale and buy something nice but ugly and practice to hone your skills. By the time your done you'll say "hell I can do that good on any kind of wood", whether it be in the shape of a table, door, or a Cornwall! Good Luck, Cornwaller (BTW Tongue Oil is the best, it don't stink like linseed)
  8. Deang, I am soooo happy that somebody actually thought to point out the difference between 'electrical watts' and "aucustic watt"! ( note the singularity?) I'm afraid that this will fall upon deaf ears though--now if everybody had the gear to measure speaker output and then correlate this with the amount of current coming thru the leads; it would be a more perfect world. The Chior has been living on less than a watt for a long time... Cornwaller P.S. Hey Pland! Who, what is Fi????
  9. ....about the Altec 511's and 811's and all the other such offerings? Back 'in the days' the Altec stuff was some of my favorite gear. I really don't remember if it was crossing over to Klipsch Mods. then but it sure is now! Could you guys give me an explaination? Cornwaller <*?*> ~
  10. Well it's been a long time---but yes I have actually owned a SX-737! It was the powerplant of my first stereo in college. That 35 watts sounded pretty good through my Altec A7 VOT's. When there was a party with loud music that everybody in the complex could hear, it was usually mine. It served me well until one of the output trans. went and took one of the woofers with it--errrhhggg! It should last a long time IF you keep it down!!! Cornwaller
  11. Thanks for all your effort. Kick back, relax, put on some sooth-muse, and let your mind wonder..... My usage of the term 'port' was only to avoid using the word hole. Sorry for the confusion. I always look at the details, and this difference in the front panel intrigued me. As for a pic for an example: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=14993&item=1948470605 As it looks there is verneer covering the plys on these speakers. Cornwaller
  12. Oh Boy....I just love a good pissing contest!!! Cornwaller
  13. Guy, That crating charge is a true rip-off!! Stop and thinkabout it. How much lumber (Good lumber for that matter) will $400 bucks buy? Even allowing for the labor this is still a terrible price unless of course, you end up with a couple of nice solid wood cabinets as left-overs (which you will not). I'ts too bad that you and I are powerless to do anything about it. My horns are coming from the big easy and the seller is charging me $30.00 to crate them. So there you go; in other words $30.00 worth of wood. I know I got lucky, Cornwaller (in Nebraska; and yes the Huskers Suck!)
  14. Guy, I forgot to mention that the speakers will still have to be boxed, and or crated. The Yellow guys in San Fran should be able to refer you. Get their phone number from the local guys in Dallas. Good luck, and let me know how this works for you! Cornwaller
  15. I suggest you call Yellow Frieght. I would in NO CIRCUMSTANCES ship by UPS!! Yellow will do a 'dock to dock' for about 62 to 68 cents per pound and will pallet them on the same flat so they don't get seperated. Also have them shipped on a Mon. or Tues so they will arrive Thurs. or Frid. and will not sit on a dock or in a truck over a weekend. This not only gives you the fewest days of transit, but will yield one less transfer (load & unload) and less chance of damage. They can be tracked anywhere at any time and the shipping and ins. can be collect to you! This all happens when you go to the dock closest to you and have them provide you with the bill of lading. Then you send the bill of lading to the shipper and all they have to do is show up at the dock, drop them off and say good bye. There is also 2500 per package of ins. included in the rate/pound I stated above. This is the best way I have found to ship these treasures, Cornwaller
  16. Fom what I have seen and what I own, there still questions: 1) I have 1978 br's (no risers) that show the plys and I have seen the same vintage with veneer covering the ply--both factory. What is up with this? 2) Both the br's and my 1983 wo's (with risers) have three bass ports and I have seen other Corn I's of the same vintage with THREE ports. What about this? All of the Corn I's above have the same desirable xover, same wiring, etc. If someone could explain these distinctions it would certainly scratch my itch. Thanks. Cornwaller (*_*) ~
  17. If you have one of the newer generation HT amps (for example) my Yamaha, there will be an output or 'mode' for a phantom center channel--where the signal is decoded for no center speaker and with the correct front mains (in my case Corns) the centering and imaging of the center is terrific! Just make sure the speaker placement is ideal for the optimum stage and go for it....Then later if you find yourself in the mood, add another heritage as a center and see what you think. Cornwaller
  18. In an effort to lessen the anal-retentiveness surrounding this subject and everyones concerns (efforts) to find perfection: Take the back off your Khorns or Cornwalls and look at the wire and connections--See anything special in there? Does form follow function?--or is this just a case of understated elegance? Cornwaller
  19. Plethora is an understatement!! I wonder what the boys at NASA use in their systems? They seem to be on the leading edge of just about everything. Speaking of NASA they have developed a substance called "Airgel" that is almost all air. A 4 inch cube can be seen through. They use it to capture (slow down) 5 micron particles of space dust traveling thousands of mph. Just think someday we'll be exhalting the great insulating properties of this stuff! Cornwaller
  20. Dean, That "exploded" view looks like quite the deal and is right on for answereing my question--thanks. Not only outside shielding but inner as well--plus the aluminum/mylar wrap?? Man, the only ingredients I don't see are teflon and the kitchen sink! What the h-e-double-hockey-sticks does this stuff cost? Cornwaller
  21. ...and the 1 inch of lead and 4 inches of concrete could be poured into 6 inch pvc with a half inch of air space all around?? Cool. Termination could be accomplished with jumper cable ends or would this be overkill?? cornwaller
  22. As I understand, the perfect combination for IC's is maximum conductivity (lowest resistance) and ample band-width. But there are trade-offs, anything that does this also makes a good anntena--subject to all of those unwanted electro magnetic fields caused by wiring in the walls, computers, TV's, etc. This is where the dialectric comes in, right? Well if this is the case; what is the best shielding material? Cornwaller
  23. MINE IS... In the new year I propose and further resolve to: Show a new found respect for my fellow man Never talk down to or feel superior to anyone Always mean what I say and say what I mean Consider the next person with empathy and sympathy Conduct myself in a way that sets a good example . . . . . . . . . (unless I happen to get a wild hair or if I'm alone or with someone) ...that's my story and I'm stickin' to it! Cornwaller
  24. Dean, Yes, I was in the choir--lead tenor; and I was never violated then...but I feel as though I'm beeing violated now. Please stop it sommore...it hurts so good! "thats my story and I'm stickin' to it" Cornwaller
  25. Dean, Just look what you started!! Before this thread got so long I was going to float the notion that "wire is wire as long as it's copper". Just for the controversy, you understand. "thats my story and I'm stickin' to it" Cornwaller
