  1. I can't put my finger on it but I saw a speaker on the web that was a similar shape.

As to what finish to put on them I'm very partial to the natural wood look(walnut JBLs mmm).

Although with MDF that would mean veneer14.gif

I personally prefer plywood cabinets over MDF, although my beloved JBLs are MDF.

MDF has the bad tendency to return to the sawdust from whence it came if you drop it, not that you should go dropping speakers3.gif

btw, was it the scan-speak drivers off of partsexpress that you used on your last project??

  2. Transients are indeed a killer.

Thats why it is so nice to have some efficient speakers.

Even my heresies which are rated at 97db 1W 1m don't use that much power.

    With 97 db @1W I'm getting 110db with about 20W.

It must be nice to have something as efficient as the Khorns1.gif

  3. I think it was in 1931 that RCA first introduced the 33 1/3 format but due to the depression it didn't sell much at all.

1948 was when columbia reintroduced the 33 1/3 and it became really popular.

I think it was also in 1948 that RCA released the 45rpm format record.

  4. I am 7 feet away from the speakers.

There is a 6 foot space and then my kitchen which opens onto my listening area.

I sit somewhat reclined on my couch.

I am sober with the possibility of a beer or two in me.

  5. I agree with the thoughts on stray reflections.

Stray reflections are indeed a problem when listening to music, I found out that there are leash laws for reflections in some areas but luckily I do all of my listening with the windows shut so I don't have to worry about the reflections getting into my neighbors garden.

As far as my hearing goes I have never noticed a difference in left to right volume, although it is propably there.

One day in class my instructor played some test tones through the cheap ceiling mounted speakers and I could hear 17.9KHz pretty easily.

I play electric bass and when I was practicing with my band awhile back at first the drummer and myself were the only ones using earplugs.

After the first long night of practicing with my amp cranked up(to 11) our lead singer and guitarist both showed up with earplugs.

A couple of weeks later a county sheriff also showed up at my friends place, He said some neighbors were complaining about the noise, he also said we sounded really good as he had been standing outside my friends place for about half an hour before he even knocked on the door.

btw, the nearest neighbors were about 90 yards away11.gif

  6. Over the summer I had the job of being the Purchasing assistant for a college back home

Basically what I did at this job was drive around in a van all day and pick up Items that people at the college had ordered, this was a great job btw.

Towards the end of the summer the college started buying a lot of things from Best Buy so I would be going in there about once a week to buy something.

After a few weeks of this it got to the point where I would walk into the store and the sales guys in the audio department would just come over and ask me what I needed them to get off the shelf for me on this particular day.

So it would happen that when I was in shopping for my own stuff I would tell them that I was just looking and I would let them know if I needed anything, then they would dissapear.

Since then I have moved to orlando and I have not trained the salesmen down here yet.2.gif

I've also found that a good way to make salesmen vanish is to do your homework before you go to the store and start spouting numbers and figures of %THD, Sensitivity, Transient attack Times, Frequency Response in relation to the 10 octaves of sound that humans can hear, etc.

  7. Yeah,

Actually I taped a block of wood to back of my tv to support my center channel, but hey it worked.

Now though I have a rack I built out of 13 ply birch plywood and 3/8" threaded rod from home depot.

My rack has a shelf underneath my tv for my center channel and it works quite nicely.

Also due to the fact that the threaded rod is adjustable I can always change the vertical spacing when I get more gear.

  8. John,

    Quite right you are indeed.

I was referring to prodj101's comment " why do you want another one? 1249 for 3 db more of output,"

The reference for the calibration of the dB being 0dB = 20 micro Pa

A Pa, called a Pascal is equal to 1 Newtons of force acting evenly over an area of 1 square meter.

    So one micro Pa = 1 Newton-6

But none of the numbers matter anything at all if your system sounds good to your ears.

And I much prefer listening to music on my stereo than doing all this math3.gif

  9. Doug,

The decibel scale is organized exponentially.

The decibel(or tenths of a Bel) is actually the exponent.

    Thus 85dB represents the number 108.5 and 88dB = 108.8

Looking at it this way 85dB becomes 316,227,766 and 88dB is 630,957,344.5

Easily seen as double the sound power.

So every 10dB increase is 10 times the power.

  10. Hi,

I guess it would depend on the Klipsch center channel in question.

I had a Klipsch KSC-C1 on top of my 14" toshiba for a while and had no problems at all.

The KSC-C1 however is not that big as far as Klipsch center channels go.

In my opinion(and that of others) the KSC-C1 sounds better than anything Bose markets as a center channel, the same goes for what I have heard of Sony.

Obviously something like a belle or a lascala would crush a 36" tv unless the tv was built like a brick outhouse.

Let us know what Klipsch center channel you are thinking about to give us an idea of the weight in question.

    Peace, Josh

  11. Yeah,

I'm in orlando FL. so I'm pretty far away too.

Between all of the helpful people hear on the forum Dale, you ought to be able to get your grille covers no problem.

I'd offer but as stated I'm a ways away(well actually I am offering but surely someone else is closer).

Let me know if I can help.

    Peace, Josh

  12. I have a PII 233 that I used for an mp3 player for awhile and it seemed to work just fine.

I'm not sure how well it would work with one of these newer soundcards though.

My dad has the Midiman 2496 that you mentioned and it is an incredible card, It beats the snot out of the creative cards I have heard.

Using it to record waves on its line in jacks sounds astounding,I must admit though that ths was using an Alesis ADAT XT20 as the source, although with the same source the creative cards still sounded like junk.

    Just my two cents2.gif

  13. I bought a spl meter from radio shack(one of the few good things they still sell) the other day and I found that a decent listening volume in my bedroom meant I was getting about 97db in my living room in front of my Heresies.

This made me realize how loud that one watt really is.

Lol, when i cranked it up in DD5.1 with My JBL surounds and KS-SC1 center channel I was getting about 110 db in star wars episodeII AOTC.

Obviously this is rather loud, and with the relatively weak sensitivity of the heresy no less.

Am I wrong in thinking that a Khorn is about five or six times louder than the heresy at one watt input?

It semms to me that the first couple of watts are indeed the most important.

    Peace, Josh
