  1. Thank for the reply ygmn, I understand your opinion on regular lamp cord. However, I have heard the differnce and while it is small, you can hear it. With the audioquest type 4 and b&w 801S3. It HAD smoother treble and the pace and timing was much better (sorry to go linn on ya). I could tell 100% of the time what cables my friends put on.....that is not chance. If your budget does not fit 100 dollars of so for cheap audioquest or mit. This is what I recommend: Go to home depot and get solid core 12 gage power wire (100ft is 18.00 dollars). This too sounds way better than lamp cord. Specially in the area of bass. Although, you miss the timing and imaging of better speaker cable. As for scientific proof. Sorry I dont have any. Just hundreds of hours of sweat and tweeking.
  2. ygmn, I'll take your bet. While working in a hifi shop in MI for 5 years, did ab/x testing and the like with almost every cable at the time. I could pick out the difference between zip and audioquest type 4 everytime. Anyway, a very noticable improvement over the zip. Just pay the 100.00 or so for some good wire, your ears will thank you. Even Bob Carver, when I talk to him about the subject , thought that zip cord sounded godawful.......enough said.... Ygmn, one thing I've learned over the years with this forum.......There are so many people with 20 to 60 years of experience in audio......You need have a open mind to how some of these opinion were derived, before you type.
  3. Hello, While I have 25 years of experience with setting up audio systems, I have not had the pleasure of dealing with DeanG xovers. Having said that, a few points on cables and biwiring. 1. With most speakers, biwiring will result in some audio improvement. The bass seems to tighten up and the mid treble is a bit smoother. 2. I think that both speaker cables need to be the same when attempting to biwire. I have tried using different cables for biwiring. It does not sound right. I'm sure this one will be debated. However, this has been my experience. 3. In terms of speaker cables, I think going with a companies lower line is the best route. For example, audioquest's lower price cables at 3 dollars a foot will give you 85 to 90% of their 100 dollar per foot cable. Do not use simple zip cord cable. Again, it does not sound right. 4. Keep in mind, while the speaker wire is important. Room acoustics and speakers placement is much more so.
  4. Hi all.....great thread, OK.....This is how Brain Cheney (who's work I respect very much) of VMPS hears horns: Other people in the High End insist on resurrecting old technology and promoting it as new technology. In speakers, this means above all, HORNS. Bruce Edgar builds a $20,000 horn, that French outfit a $65,000 horn. Horns?? With phenolic drivers? Many milliseconds of delay? The megaphone effect (reflections within the horn throat that make everybody sound like Rudy Vallee)? Yes, the efficiency is amazing, as is the sound pressure. Yes its impactful and sounds better with those 5 Watt single-ended triode power amps. Yes the overall sound quality is marginal to dreadful. No, theres nothing you can do about it: change the driver, change the horn throat, equalize, use better materials. Nothing really helps. Dont listen to horns, theyre bad for your aural health. Reference: http://www.vmpsaudio.com/dc32.htm Personally, the dynamic impact of a horn and the emotional content is worth the slight horn effect..... Now can this indeed be modeled into a computer program and measured?.......
  5. Hi, I am a bit confused. Does not the horn chamber of the woofer have to be an exact size by design?......IE.... would not the additional volume of the bass mod adversely affect the horn output? Thanks
  6. THANK YOU Dr. WHO!!!!! Great post........very well written.......Very much what I hear myself........ Do you use digital time delay for your woofer horn?....... As the original poster ....I am trying to find out why we hear things we do.......I want to say both are great speaker.......no doubt khorn do sound better in some rooms..... but just because it is less money, does not mean LAS and subwoofers will kick not the khorns ***.....lol
  7. Bill H, Im not sure....but i think the K2 series are the 15,000 ones......The arrarys you cannot buy till spring 2006 from what I have read. http://www.audioholics.com/ces/ces2004/CES_2004_day2c.html
  8. Hi Dirk, I do not yet know the cost....however, JBL did what I have been saying for years to do.......get rid of the enclosure.....it simple but brillent............I hope klipsch engineers are watching this one.......from what I heard its an extremely clean and clear horn......looks cool too! I love klipsch....however, competition is good for all!!!!!......Go JBL!!!!

  10. DM, Oh yeah.....i remember many moons ago ...could be stereophile....they did amp testing.... Sure enough.....black colored amps were dark sounding......Silver color amps were bright.... Just got off the phone with Steve Philips at Klipsch....great guy.....so nice to talk to me for an hour! He said that Trey and himself recently one Fri night took some LAS 2 out for a spin and used a RSW 10 subwoofer.....Which kept up with the LAS 2 till 115db or so......lol........by the time the rsw 10 was compressing ....it was so loud they had to run out of the room..... maybe Im over thinking this sub debate....... what a need is a six pack and two RSW 15.....Just kidding Steve!
  11. hi sfogg, I have used two subwoofers before..........I have found one sub is easier to intergrate into the system...especially 4cuft!!!...however, thats why I asked about two carvers subs....I would have the room to do that....or one giant 18inch .....LOL I am not sure ive heard this stereo bass myself.....but I have friends that swear by it.......what do you think?.....have you tried mono vs. stereo bass?
  12. Daddy Dee, Thank you for taking the time for the LAS 2 review. Very intresting. Your review helps me quite a bit...... Your points on the Khorn are well taken, as I said I would most likely get the Khorns with two excellent corners..... However, sometimes I think the LAS bass sounds better.......period.....(in some rooms!) With my current room..... The LAS is the better speaker.....for me..... I may go back to a 15 inch 4cuft. subwoofer........hehehheh...... Bob carver would kill me......When I talked with him about subwoofers for two hours (1995), he could not convence me smaller is better than bigger with subs.....any sunfire subs vs. 15 or 18inch subs opinions?
  13. Yep..... ONE good quality subwoofer is better than two lesser subs........ Doug C makes a great point......subwoofer setup on one is waaaay easier..... Use the lowest Fs point you can ....without creating a gap....
  14. Hi, I had a center channel speaker.....sold it......sounds better without it......imo
  15. Daddy Dee, Can you write a quick review......I am thinking of buying the LAS II...
  16. Frzninvt, I think your right Khorns are great.......for the most part......Just sometime the Khorn bass does not seem as quick as the LAS...... What I was trying to get at, is it psychoacoustics of how he hear that creats this, or the bigger the horn the better......as noted I don NOT have two PROPER coners......not talking myself out of a thing.....just what I hear......If I had two corners I most like would do the Korn.....Could not help myself........but many people have been trashing the LAS of late.....which really is too bad......it can be a picky speaker to mate to electronics because of the mid squawker horn .......tube/class a or class T can overcome this for the most part......both the khorn and the las cannot escape that.....
  17. Hello Klipschland, I would say LAS or Belles are a better choice unless you have TWO excellent corners. Take your time do the research. Read PWK white papers on room acoustics. See if your in the ballpark of what the KHORNS need. I am using LAS with one speaker in a perfect corner and the other without a corner. I have passed a few times on getting the khorns. From what I understand the more symmmetry a room has the closer the left vs right speaker wavefront will be. Resulting in better stereo imaging. This is more important to me than 50hz vs. 32hz. Lets face it....are you sure your next house is going to have two decent corners....thats a big gamble. You know the LAS will be there, no matter what room your in. While I do not own Khorns Ive heard them many different times in many different setups. Yes, the room does have more energy with the korns. However, the transient behavior in the LAS sounds quicker and more defined. This is mostly true with acoustic jazz and the like. While I do not know the mathematics on why this is so (maybe someone can help, ALK, a 6 foot horn vs 13 foot?), It is a constant in my acoustical memory. The reality of a subwoofer intergration is achievable but is usally hard won. For 80% of the music out there you dont need a subwoofer. However, psychoacoustics has proven that low fequence energy does indeed help with the placement of the hall and stereo image. Now, this is the rub....SOME PEOPLE are more sensative to this phenomenon!!!! I think this a good portion of the why there is sort of two camps in the Khorn vs. LAS debate. You can always get two good 15 inch subwoofers, cross them over about 45hz or so, and let the LAS rip. In short, Khorn with proper corners and LAS for everything else. Happy listening, Jeff PS. Has anyone heard the LAS 2?
  18. Q man, Let me know if you still have alk xovers....i would like to buy a pair.... jpfream@hotmai.com Jeff
  19. Hi, I'm confused NOS...forgive me.....So are you guys saying that its not worth the effort to go from AL to AA/A ? Or are you saying that there is not much differnce betwen the A and the AA, but worth the upgrade? Thanks
  20. Hello Klipschland, I have a pair of 1989 LS with the AL networks. Type M drivers on tweeter and sqwaker....... 1.Can I just replace the AL directly with A or AA xovers (Troy of klipsch said the the m mid driver is more sensitive... can you hear it? 2. If not will ALK xovers drop right in? 3. Will it make a noticeable different is Sound quality? Thank you, Jeff
  21. Thanks for the emails, Here is a white paper web link on class T: http://www.tripath.com/downloads/an1.pdf The class T amplifier is the only SS amp I can listen for hours without wanting to go back to tubes.....Sony has hit a home run with this....I talked to an Audio Reaserch tech that said he gave up with tube amp for their new class T model....Claims it flat out better in all respects than his old AR tubes...!!! http://www.audioresearch.com/150.2.html Fun stuff..... Jeff
  22. Hi Minn, Thanks for the email....I didnt know that carver pro has a class T amp....Thanks for the update....Ive been preaching tubes and horns forever....I going to have to say CLASS T is better at this point....I will miss playing with the bias and tubes...as for sound.....It is so good Im shocked.... Tube lovers look out......There's a new kid on the block....He's Called Class T Keep listening, Jeff
  23. Hello Klipsch land, Had to give a heads up here. I have the new sony STR DA5000es that uses class T technology lisensed from Tripath Technologies. Its rated at 170watt RMS x 7(8ohms) . For those of you who turn your nose up at sony......It is the same chipset that the new audio research is now using for thier solid state amplifiers. For reference, I have used conrad johson, audio research, rotel, ps audio and many others. This is better than all of them.....Without going into a rave review, I must say that I have never heard my la scala sound better. Observations: 1. The midrange is just fantastic. Very non fatiguing.....I hate to use the word tube like...but....it fits....very SMOOTH with bloom 2. Dynamics is startling....I have never heard better snap and decay from my LS 3. Top end is once again SMOOTH....just unreal from a digital amp....yet the crash of a cymble will make you jump out of your seat... 4. excellent timber of vocal 5. All this with a 29lbs a/v receiver that doesnt even get warm ....if this was a class ab amp it would have weight in at 100lbs cost 5 times as much and be 3 times the size. This is after 2 months of using it....I never thought id give up tubes....The new class T amp is quite special on Klipsch.....Just a heads up... Keep listing, Jeff jpfream@hotmail.com
  24. Trey, I called the Klipsch part deptment. They said AL-3 were not advailable anymore. Is this true?
