  1. As for Klipsch failure in both quality control (Bluetooth pairing failure on the last 2 of 3 units, and 1 of 3 pairs of Surround 3 speakers produced static) and lack of features (lacking immersive stereo) and unfamiliar tech support staff, Klipsch marketing, engineering, manufacturing and customer support managers should make a serious review of this product line. I've had three BAR 48 units and three sets of Surround 3 speakers in the last 6 weeks because of these issues. The last two BAR 48s won't pair with Bluetooth and I now realize Klipsch does not include stereo immersion with the Surround 3 speakers. I've given up on the Klipsch BAR 48 5.1 and will be returning them for refund.
  2. Apparently it only supports Dolby Digital. I know for a fact is doesn't support DTS, but I knew that when I bought it. I guess I assumed it supported 5.1 PCM and DD+, but was wrong. I have the Surround 3's and I can only get 5.1 when using Netflix, Prime or HBO max. I have tried just about every hook up and TV settings I can, but still cannot get 5.1 though certain apps even when the broadcast is in 4K. I use the Dish Anywhere app a lot and can only get 2.0 stereo when using. I can get sound to run through the Surround 3's when I set the TV audio settings to pass through or PCM, but it is just in stereo, not 5.1. It's not the TV as I have auto detect, auto pass through, DD, DD+ and DTS setting on the audio out settings. I tried them all. I can get 5.1 / 7.1 on all apps including the Dish Anywhere app through Firestick when using my tradition set up, so I know it is not the signal. Really disappointing. I will say the sound and clarity of the bar and surrounds are great, but if it only decodes DD and stereo then what the use. Very disappointed. Maybe they will come out with a firmware update to support more audio formats. I pre-ordered the Cinema 1200 to get Atmos and was going to move this to the bedroom, but I am thinking I am going to cancel now.
  3. This morning I received an email from Klipsch Product Support. There was not much progress to report as many Klipsch staff were preoccupied with CES. The information I provided has been forwarded to Management and Tech teams. The email acknowledged the sound levels from the Surround 3 speakers were still low when listening to a source that was not Dolby Digital and when the Bar 48 was simulating surround sound. According to reports received, the surround volume is good with the latest update especially when tested with true 5.1 source with a modernly produced movie. Steps and details on the Installer mode and external player are coming soon and will be posted on the product page. Most sub / satellite speaker connectivity issues have been addressed with the latest FW update. Regarding #3, I told them the levels were better but still not adequate. I expect to hear more during the week...
  4. KevinB, OK, so I found and I am playing The Expanse, Season 4, Episode 1 now on my LG 4KTV through Amazon Prime Video app. The only time I hear the rear speakers is during action scenes such space battle scenes where things are flying back to front and booming from behind me. The rear speaker loudness is underwhelming, as though the rear sounds are an afterthought tossed in every so often. If the S3 speakers could be adjusted another 20+ dB upward to be as loud or louder than the front 3.1 speakers all the time, I might enjoy it. My expectation is equal to what I have with my Denon/Klipsch 7.2 home theater where I can listen to all sources in fully volume-balanced surround mode 100% of time, including listening to stereo sources like music CDs and mp3. My rating on the Surround 3 speakers for the BAR 48: Klipsch failed. It may be beyond their technical expertise to date, they may need to hire new experts in the field of digital sound technologies (although I admire and am dedicated to the sound quality of their traditional speaker technology), but I hope they can fix it with a firmware update before January 31, or these speakers are being returned for a full refund. PS - KevinB, thanks for the suggestion of a good 5.1 surround video to play to see what the BAR 48 5.1 does and does not do.
  5. @CanadianAndy If you were getting any sound from the Surround 3 speakers the BAR 48 must have had the ((SUR)) light on. 🙂 Did you verify that the Dolby Digital light was also on? It would need to be if your source was sending 5.1 surround sound to your soundbar. To get surround sound from your TV you have to ensure the TV sound output format is set to Dolby Digital and not PCM.
  6. Update Mon Dec 30, 2019, 1200PM PST. In short, I received the replacement BAR 48 (from Amazon), updated the firmware (to v23 of 12/13/2019) and was disappointed (again) the Surround 3 (2nd set) speakers remain whisper quiet even with Dolby Digital and Surround lights on. To add insult to injury, Bluetooth does not connect (Bluetooth on the 1st BAR 48 worked fine to connect to both my Windows 10 computer and Android smartphone). Bottom line, if this were any other brand and I absolutely had to have 5.1 rather than 3.1, I'd shytecan it and never look back, but I'm a long-time fanatic for the Klipsch sound and Klipsch delivers for me again in amazing 3.1 sound from the affordable BAR 48. Having 5.1 with the Surround 3 speakers is an option that doesn't work for me and I'll simply return them for a refund. I can easily exchange the BAR 48 on Amazon again to get Bluetooth back online (Kudos to Amazon. Each year, from Thanksgiving onward, Amazon offers deep discounts and allows returns/exchanges through Jan 31 for almost everything).
  7. I just got my warranty replacements: A new BAR 48. New Surround 3 speakers. Shortly after I set it up, I too started having random popping sounds from my right surround. This is an issue I did not have on my original system but one that other customers have reported in these forums.
  8. I have both the Cinema 600 and Bar 48 sound bars with the Surround 3 speakers pair to each. With the Bar 48 I get an awful screeching noise periodically out of the blue, exclusively out of the right side speaker. As it pertains to the Cinema 600 combo, endless static out of the right speaker. I’ve had Klipsch products for over a decade, even “upgrading” my R-10B and both R-20B’s with the new products….apparently not my best decisions. At least my ProMedia 2.1 set still works.
  9. @Christian Bonnet Two years ago I purchased a BAR 48 and Surround 3 speakers that had just recently become available. Almost immediately I encountered issues. Not knowing where to turn I posted my concerns in this forum and found other customers having similar issues. I found the Klipsch support web pages but it contained very little information about any soundbars so I opened a case with Klipsch Product support. Over the course of a year I documented about a dozen issues and shared my experiences with other community members. About a year after my original purchase I was offered a warranty replacement which had more issues than my original one. Other customers had a similar experience. In January of this year the Cinema 600 became available and I was offered one to replace the defective BAR 48 warranty replacement. Of course, I accepted. The Cinema 600 was a big improvement. All the issues I had with the BAR 48 appeared to have been resolved but there were still a couple of show stoppers. The BAR 48 advertised support for Dolby Digital Plus but I never did get it working. The Cinema 600 was supposed to resolve that issue but didn't. Later I was told it didn't provide support for DD+. 😒 About once a week it would lose its connection with my TV (HDMI-ARC). I could only restore the connection by removing the power and reconnecting it. This behaviour continued for about eight months. In September, v33 of the firmware was released and I installed it September 3rd. A couple of weeks later, the soundbar would no longer power on at all. It was bricked! Perhaps that is why firmware v33 is no longer available. I don't know. On November 1 my Cinema 800 arrived and, yes, there are issues. I have added my comments to this thread: Do I have the bitter honor of having the first dead Cinema 800? It begins... I use my soundbar primarily when watching loud movies. I haven't listened closely in a quiet setting so I haven't noticed your issue. Since Klipsch provides little information about what issues a firmware update is supposed to resolve, you'll have to contact Klipsch Product Support and ask if v33 might resolve your issue and when it might again be made available. If you learn anything, please share with the community.
  10. After a half dozen attempts to complete a manual update the firmware, Klipsch Product Support asked me to try a few more times. 😒 I disconnected all inputs and removed the dongle connecting my Surround 3 speakers just to eliminate any possible issue due to connected devices. It made no difference. The firmware still showed "DSP 4.4" after the upgrade completed. In a previous post I reported that my display showed "DSP 4. 4" (with the space). Klipsch Product Support asked me to provide a photo then responded that was normal.
  11. After my November 4 post above I notified Klipsch Product support. I have a case I opened two years ago. 😞 Ten days later I got a response asking if I tried this and that and could I send a photo of the of the display. They also wanted to know what version of WIFI I was using. This is the relevant info from the display: "MCU V76", "DSP 4. 4" (with the space), "WIFI" (with no version). Yesterday I phoned Klipsch Product Support. The gentleman with whom I spoke was very helpful. He acknowledged that some customers have encountered issues with firmware updates and, while they don't yet have a solution, he suggested there may be an issue with how the USB thumb drive is formatted. Okay, I'm grasping at straws here. Initially I prepared the USB drive on a Windows 10 system. This time I formatted the drive on a Linux system and again attempted the firmware update. After it completed, the display showed: "MCU V76", "DSP 4. 4" (with the space), "WIFI 1.0.138.0". While the firmware update did not complete successfully some components did change. Perhaps if we share additional details about our attempted firmware upgrades we can find something in common with all the failed attempts? I have the Surround 3 speakers pared and connected. This is required for part two of the firmware upgrade but apparently not for the first part. Also, my sound bar has HDMI connections to my TV, Apple TV, and cable box. I will attempt another manual firmware upgrade after removing all external connections and see if that helps. More to follow...
  12. The Surround 3 speakers are the ones you need. The Cinema series soundbars are designed to work with them. I have a pair and they sound great. There have been issues with some of the supported soundbars where the volume from the surrounds is not loud enough but that is an issue with the soundbar and not the surrounds.
  13. I was given a Cinema 600 to replace a Bar 48 that I had nothing but problems with. Set up the 600 and I'm having exactly the same problem you're having . One Surround 3 speaker or no speaker would pair. They alternate which side too. LOL. Tried upgrading soundbar firmware, it locked up and now neither the bar or the subwoofer will turn on. Between the 48 and this one I've been at it a couple months. I have a set of corner horns that are over 30 years old. I have their 7.1 entertainment center system. All great, worth every penny. I'm so frustrated with this wireless stuff. It's good thing there's no phone support on Saturdays.
  14. Do you have the Surround 3 speakers installed and connected? When using the apps, is the Dolby Digital light on the soundbar illuminated? What is the audio output format from your TV: PCM? Dolby Digital 5.1? Does it change when using the apps? Is the sound still muffled if you turn off ((SUR))?
  15. I listen to stereo music (CDs, MP3s, streaming, cable TV music) a lot more than I watch 5.1 surround videos, and I watch normal cable TV channels which presumably are stereo. I fully expected the BAR 48 5.1, at the very least, to play stereo music on all of it's 5.1 speakers, given that competitive 5.1 brands offer this, as well as just about all low cost home receivers and low cost car stereos do exactly that. Klipsch Surround 3 speakers do not include this feature of immersive 5.1 sound for stereo sources like competitive brands do. Big disappointment to me.
  16. Hi DaleG, the past few days my Bar 48's subwoofer was dis-connecting from the bar and the Bluetooth was crackly and not playing properly. After returning the Surround 3 speakers for a refund....I decided to box up the Bar 48 and take it back. I got an LG SL6Y soundbar instead of getting a Klipsch replacement. So far so good! I'd say the LG soundbar has better sound compared to the Klipsch but the subwoofer that comes with it, is a bit weenie....It's a 6" sub but much smaller enclosure compared to the Klipsch. I can still control the volume for the sub, and the LG bar seems to have more audio settings, and even an equalizer to fine tune the highs and lows. Also LG has surround speakers available similar to the Klipsch ones however I can't seem to find them anywhere just yet....everyone is sold out! I was really hoping the Klipsch would work out but seems you and lots of other Klipsch owners are having the same issues.
  17. I updated the original post. Update 15 January 2020. Where to start? Klipsch has really dropped the ball with the BAR 48, in lack of features and poor quality control. 1) Out of 3 BAR 48s I’ve had in two months, two fail to pair with Bluetooth, including the latest unit. This is a show-stopper for me. I haven’t decided whether to seek a 4th replacement or get a refund and go with a competitor which I know works well and sounds nearly as good. 2) Out of 3 sets of Surround 3 speakers I’ve had, one pair produced static, none are loud enough while playing 5.1 surround videos (such as Star Wars Last Jedi), and none play stereo sources on the S3 speakers louder than a whisper, which I fully expected to enjoy (given that simple car audio and home theater receives plays stereo sources on all speakers using ‘Balance’ for left-right and ‘Fade’ for front-back balance). I may just return them for a refund, since 5.1 is an option for me, as I’m fine with 3.1. 3) I’ve an online support request. The tech said he has forwarded a bug report to engineering. I replied I hope he forwards these concerns to marketing, engineering and manufacturing so they can decide on a competitive feature set and improving product quality. 4) Kudos to Amazon for their extended return/exchange dates during the annual holiday period starting at Thanksgiving (extending normal 30-day returns to January 31).
  18. According to the Klipsch website: Surround 3: Adjusting the Volume But that raises another question. Each time you press the remote ((SUR)) button for 3 seconds to adjust the surround 3 speaker volume, is it possible that it gets reset to 0 dB?
  19. @DaleG For the time being I will withhold that information for a number of reasons: I have provided Klipsch details similar to what you have but I have not yet heard back so I can't say whether or not I will have any more success than you have had. Many support organizations have a process for assigning cases so knowing the names of other support staff does not mean we will have access to them. Klipsch does a very good job of restricting public access to internal staff. One example is that we have only been given first names. If we are relying on them to resolve our issues there is no point in possibly antagonizing them by making that information public. According to the specs, the Surround 3 speakers should be capable of producing more than sufficient sound levels but those sound levels are determined by the BAR 48. If there are issues affecting the sound levels or sound quality the source of those issues could be: The Surround 3 speakers themselves. The wireless dongle. The BAR 48 itself. When troubleshooting, a best practice is to make one change at a time and assess the results. I realize this is difficult for those of us experiencing these issues if one product must be returned before receiving a replacement and especially when the replacement experiences more issues than the product that was returned. 😩 There are additional issues when dealing with a large online retailer: They may have a large quantity of old stock, all of which may experience the same issues. There is no way to check out a replacement before accepting it. In your case, you may be better off trying to get a warranty replacement directly from Klipsch. I have some comments about the issues you reported to Zach: I agree. I don't have this issue. Since it affects both speakers I suspect the issue lies with a component common to both: Perhaps the wireless dongle or the BAR 48 itself. I agree. Where does it state the volume adjustment is only +/- 9dB? I know there are 8 volume level adjustments up and down from neutral but I don't remember seeing anything stating what they are or should be. If your previous BAR 48 didn't have this issue then it is quite possible that this replacement has other issues, perhaps even contributing to #2. I too see the same behavior with my unit but with only one TV and one soundbar I had no way to determine whether the issue lay with the TV or the soundbar. I will reach out to Klipsch once again to see if they have made any progress.
  20. KevinB wrote: The sound level from the Surround 3 speakers is adequate when: I'm watching a movie with DD sound and the DD light on my soundbar is illuminated. and... the ((SUR)) indicator on the BAR 48 is illuminated, and... The surround volume is at maximum ***** I play DD channels from cable TV (Comcast/Xfinity) with ((SUR)) turned on, S3 volume at max and ... the S3 speakers are a bare whisper. Same thing from Bluetooth and Optical inputs. I don't have a Bluray player attached. Same thing when I play Amazon Prime videos with 5.1 channel sound, with both DD and ((SUR)) lights on (LG 4KTV with Amazon Prime app built-in, which is 1 year old TV). As a comparison to what I expect from the BAR 48 5.1, I have a home theater I setup a few years ago, with a Denon 7.2 receiver with 7.2 Klipsch speakers and they all play nice and loud. This is what I expect from the BAR 48 5.1 if Klipsch engineers would get their act together, fix the problem and release a firmware update this month, or I will have to return the S3 speakers by Jan 31 for a full refund from Amazon.
  21. @CanadianAndy Check the audio output format on the TV. If you see the Dolby Digital light on the soundbar when watching Netflix then the TV is set correctly to output Dolby Digital. Does the TV output still show Dolby Digital when watching a Blu-ray movie? I doubt it, otherwise the Dolby Digital light on the soundbar would be illuminated so either the Blu-ray player is not sending Dolby Digital to the TV or HDCP is preventing the TV from sending it to your soundbar. If that is the case, you may still be able to listen to your Blu-ray movies in surround sound if you can connect the Blu-ray player directly to the BAR 48 using a digital optical cable (assuming your Blu-ray player has a digital optical output.) You won't get any sound from the Surround 3 speakers unless the ((SUR)) light on the soundbar is illuminated.
  22. Melting735, my Surround 3 speakers volume is too low, also. I've exchanged with new replacements both the S3 speakers and the BAR 48, updated to current firmware v23 (12/13/2019), adjusted the "Surround" volume, twiddled with the HDMI input, the Optical input and the Bluetooth inputs. The S3 speakers are always too low in volume. I waited 24 days for a ridiculous response from Klipsch technical support and was told to update the firmware. I replied they need to fix their product. I've posted about it here:
  23. I watched "The Dark Knight" yesterday with my Surround 3 speakers and it sounded like the centre speaker audio was coming through them, not surround. Still not very loud at all and the way I have them set up, is for my listening pleasure...anyone else in the room would not be able to enjoy it due to the direction the speakers need to be for me to hear it. I think I will return them to Best Buy and get my money back. Very Disappointing from a brand like Klipsch. 🔇
  24. You're confusing 'maximum output' with balanced output. Normal listening output/volume is less than a quarter of maximum rated output. Just like left and right channel output is balanced, front and rear/surround speaker sound output can and should be able to be balanced to the users taste. In the case of the Surround 3 speakers, Klipsch fails miserably, imho.
  25. The BAR 48 supports Dolby Digital via the digital optical input and via an HDMI (ARC) connection. It is also supposed to support Dolby Digital Plus but that is only via the HDMI (ARC) connection. The BAR 48 and the Surround 3 speakers cannot make use of an external amplifier. You would most likely want to connect the BAR 48 to your TV's HDMI (ARC) input. You could also connect it to your Yamaha receiver via the digital optical connection which would also allow you to hear 5.1 surround sound from your receiver, assuming your Yamaha receiver was able to provide Dolby Digital output via the digital optical connection. If your receiver doesn't have a digital optical output, you could still connect it to your receiver using the analog connection but that would only give you 2-channel stereo.
