La Scalas are also great for alternative/classical,
alternative/jazz, alternative/blues and alternative/folk. Probably
great for alternative/country, alternative/rap, and alternative/punk
but I'm not a fan of those.

But seriously, the La Scalas are really great aren't they? What are you using to make them go?

Rega Maia 3 amp, Rega Cursa 3 preamp, Rega Planet cdp, Hsu 12" sub, and 2 - 2005 LaScalas (the year right before the LSII's I believe). My Rega stuff is British and sounds remarkably tube-ish... meaning not bright at all.

See here: http://www.audiotrends.com.au/pre-power_amplifiers.htm ---

but I didn't pay that much by a landslide. that some british currency?

Nice, I've got the same ones - 2005 right before the change. That Rega gear looks very high end, I think Rega has a reputation for attention to thoughful design. No surprize that it would sound excellent.

I'm driving mine with the opposite approach; 1930's style 2A3 SET monoblocks, tube preamp and phono EQ with external tube power supply (all made by George Wright), and a 32 year old Bang & Olufsen record player.

But likewise, I love the clear high end without any overly bright smear. As for the mid range, you already know how the La Scalas do that so well. For the low end, since I'm exclusively playing records, and I had Heresys for 25 years before the LS, the low end sounds plenty good to me without a sub.

I'm driving my '89 LS's with a Rega Planet, and a pair of 6SL7's feeding a pair of DC heated 71A's. Powered by a mid-fifties industrial Lambda tube power supply. I myself happen to like how it sounds.

I won't be raising the roof listening at around a half watt per side, but it works out about perfect to me for just plain ol' listening sessions in my small place.

Finicky speakers......you hook up a cheap SS integrated amp and they turn into hot blaring/glaring monsters..............
