avman
i'm going to embark on tweaking the position of the sub in my ht room. i read that to determine best (highest volume)placement for sub, you should put the sub in your listening position, then see where in the room it sounds 'loudest', and put the sub there...any comments? avman. ------------------ 1-pair klf 30's c-7 center ksps-6 surrounds RSW-15 in the house!! sony strda-777ES receiver upgraded to v.2.02 including virtual matrix 6.1 sony playstation 2 sony dvpnc 650-v 5-disc dvd/cd/SACD changer dishnetwork model 7200 dishplayer satellite receiver/digital bitstream recorder sony kv36xbr450 high-definition 4:3 tv sharp xv-z1u lcd projector w/84" 4:3 sharp screen Bello'international Italian-made a/v furniture panamax max dbs+5 surge protector/power conditioner monster cable and nxg interconnects/12 gua.speaker wire KLIPSCH-So Good It Hz! t-man
Good approach, but loudest doesn't always mean the best frequency response. What may sound loud at 50 hz, may be very different along the entire bass spectrum. I would place the sub in the area where you get the smoothest frequency response. Doing that requires lots and lots of patience and tweaking. As for me, I have a 20 db dip in FR between 50-70 hz. Kinda sucks. The rest of the FR is really nice and flat. Ray Garrison
There's been some talk about this approach on this board. Theory says "To find the best place for the sub, but the sub where you sit, then walk around the room and find the place where the bass sounds the best. Put the sub there, and you'll have the best bass at the sitting location." This worked great for me. Some posters have taken exception to it on either theoretical grounds or on the basis that they tried it and it didn't work. Can't hurt to try it. Most prominent subwoofer reviewer, Tom N., pretty much says stick the sub in a corner and you'll usually get the best sound. ------------------ Music is art Audio is engineering Ray's Music System
avman
thanks guys. i have to get a test disc (avia) that displays the frequency as it does the sweep to see where the peaks and valleys are. i've been boosting bass on a 'curve' which peaks at 125Hz, to 'tame the horns' i've found adding a little bass in effect brings down the midrange. found a loud 'bass node' by my door catacorner to the sub. no one sits there, and it probably adds to the high blood pressure of my neighbor,so if i can get better sound-(no complaints, but i'm not buying anything else,so i'm left w/tweaking what i've got)-and cut down on 'spillover',i'd be happier.avman. ------------------ 1-pair klf 30's c-7 center ksps-6 surrounds RSW-15 in the house!! sony strda-777ES receiver upgraded to v.2.02 including virtual matrix 6.1 sony playstation 2 sony dvpnc 650-v 5-disc dvd/cd/SACD changer dishnetwork model 7200 dishplayer satellite receiver/digital bitstream recorder sony kv36xbr450 high-definition 4:3 tv sharp xv-z1u lcd projector w/84" 4:3 sharp screen Bello'international Italian-made a/v furniture panamax max dbs+5 surge protector/power conditioner monster cable and nxg interconnects/12 gua.speaker wire KLIPSCH-So Good It Hz! aab3rd
A better way to do it is to remain seated in you listening position and bribe someone with beer to move the sub around while you test/listen.
Ray Garrison
aab3rd, THAT is the ABSOLUTE BEST suggestion for locating the right place to put a subwoofer that I have ever heard. Why didn't I think of that? Will this also work for determining the best listening position? Guest BobG
How do you get the people with beer to come over in the first place? ;-)
avman
hey bob! obviously you haven't seen my 'first attempt at ht pix' posts in home theater. when you have a ht room like mine, you tell them what kind of beer to bring! hehe avman. ------------------ 1-pair klf 30's c-7 center ksps-6 surrounds RSW-15 in the house!! sony strda-777ES receiver upgraded to v.2.02 including virtual matrix 6.1 sony playstation 2 sony dvpnc 650-v 5-disc dvd/cd/SACD changer dishnetwork model 7200 dishplayer satellite receiver/digital bitstream recorder sony kv36xbr450 high-definition 4:3 tv sharp xv-z1u lcd projector w/84" 4:3 sharp screen Bello'international Italian-made a/v furniture panamax max dbs+5 surge protector/power conditioner monster cable and nxg interconnects/12 gua.speaker wire KLIPSCH-So Good It Hz! HornEd
Avman, BobG got me to thinking the other day so I re-read a Floyd Toole interview that might help you with understanding more of the beautiful HT environment you have built. Check it out at http://www.homecinemachoice.com/articles/interviews/FloydToole/FloydToole.shtml and enjoy! HornEd
