Tina Posted August 10, 2009 Share Posted August 10, 2009 I have a set of Klipsch KG4 00 Speakers I'm trying to sell locally. I had a question raised about them that I cannot answer. This is the question, "Are the rear facing speakers, really speakers? They could be passive. if u know , let me know." I asked my father, who supposedly knows everything, and he said they were real. Well, believing my father I told the guy they were. The guy came back and said based on his research he has come to the conclusion they were passive. So, to find out whether they were passive or real, I removed one of them and found they were indeed passive. Anyway, the guy interested in them sent me the following: "Considering their age and the condition, I can offer $100 for them." I posted on another website about this "issue" and one of the responses was: "$100 is a low ball price-Klipsch speakers usually command way more that that." I kind of felt the same way. Someone suggested I ask the guy who is interested why he thinks that age would have an adverse effect on the price. So I did and this was his reply: "Well, the older they are the closer till they have to get the surrounds replaced. And the cones pressed in on the back detract from the value. Just my view." The following is another comment I recieved regarding the speakers. "Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that Klipsch and Polks from that era used butyl rubber, NOT foam surrounds. Those dust caps are to keep debris from entering the motor structure, of which a passive radiator does not have. Remove the whole basket and gently push them out from the rear. Even if you left them like that, they could never affect the performance, unless they vibrated. If you'll notice, he didn't tell you that 100 is all they're worth, he said that's all he could give you. The dude's playing you like a cheap sewer trout. No reason a set of Klipsch in good working order shouldn't fetch at least 150. Especially where no S/H charges are tacked on." Okay, so I need some input/help and hopefully someone here can give it to me since I'm completely clueless one these things. Any idea what a reasonable price would be for them? fastlane Posted August 10, 2009 Share Posted August 10, 2009 I personally would take no less than $150 for kg4's in good working condition. If they have some cosmetic issues, they will obviously not fetch a high price, say $300+. The rear drivers are passive and the dust covers that are pushed in can be pulled or vacuumed out. They cannot be pushed out from behind as the center cannot be accessed from behind. I'm guessing $150 - $200 is what they will go for. $250 is the most I've ever paid for KG4's that were in even better condition than these. Good luck. Hope this helped. Now don't yell at me because that wasbefore I found out more about them so I'll have to reduce that pricesignificantly. Like I said I know nothing about these, but obviously from my research and posting on other forums I now know they aren't worth what I am asking but are worth a little more than what he's asking, and that the guy was trying to pull a fast one on me. So I can vacuum the dust covers out without damaging them. That's good to know. Will have to do that. I did figure out they couldn't be pushed out from inside when I took the speaker out. So would it be a good idea to change the price to $250 and put "or best REASONABLE offer (BRO)", or just $250 without the BRO, or just $200? How would you rate the condition? willland Posted August 11, 2009 Share Posted August 11, 2009 I use Formby's Lemon Oil Treatment. You should be able to find it at Ace Hardware. Some on the forum may suggest another brand. SilverSport Posted August 11, 2009 Share Posted August 11, 2009 in the Chicago area $200 seems to be the magic price...you can sell for whatever price you wish but kg 4s seem to languish for sale much over $200 and sell quick for $200 and less...in the short term, something as suggested for oiling them even using Olde English available anywhere...if you are selling, don't go to too much trouble...and perhaps use the vacuum method to "pop" out the dust covers on the rear passive radiators...incidently, this does nothing to hurt the sound but it looks nicer...good luck with your sale. I figure starting a little high might help, but we'll see. I tried the vacuum method to pop out the back dust overs but that didn't work. I guess my vacuum wasn't strong enough. Not sure what else to do about that. Hopefully, they will sell soon. I'm going to hold off on the guy who offered me $150.00 for them. Thanks again.
