Bonzo
As fate, dumb luck, right place at the right time, or whatever you want to call it, I get it! I landed a beautiful pair of 79 BR La Scalla's from Monty (montigue231) and they are IT! I was actually looking for Cornwalls but fell into the La Scalla's and I couldn't be happier. Naturally, I recently sold my Scott 299B amp, duh, so now what? They sound great with my restored Marantz 2325 receiver but it's a bit overkill in my room. I have a line on an Eico HF-81 which, by everything I have read, is a good choice. Any other suggestions say in the $500 to $600 range would be appreciated. Thanks, Mark, the guy who finally gets it! edwinr
Very nice. What you've already got will do for a while, won't it? You can take your time looking for a nice tube amp I saw these little beauties online the other day. One of these might be fun to play with the La Scalas: http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue46/miniwatt.htm
Colin
I think most refurbished, vintage integrated tube amplifierswould sound wonderful with big ole horns for the money. The ASLWave 10s are nice, low cost, kinda punchy sound for big ole horns. I have heardthe copper-faced Cayin TA30 integrated tube amplifier on classic Klipsch Khornloudspeakers at preacher man DaddyDee’s Khorn gathering in Arkansas, back in May, 2004. I then auditioned the TA-50 for EnjoyTheMusic.com and cancertainly recommend them for big ole horns also. I serious auditioned, in my own home, in two locations, andthree speakers, on my own equipment, for EnjoyTheMusic.com, the ASLAQ1003DT for about one thousand dollars. This too is a very competent, good, solid performer of an amplifier with no obvious shortcomings for big olehorns. After a wonderful listening day with modified LaScalas atMike Lindsay’s 2006 Floridaget-together, I strongly recommend investing in NOSvalve’s KT88 VRD monoblocks –very solid bass for a tube amplifier! All that being said before, a really powerful sub-wooferhelps give tube amplifiers a solid bottom end.
Bonzo
I don't want to get too fancy or spend a bunch of money at this time. I am going to invest in some crossovers and maybe some of Bob's tweeters. A friend of mine was going to try and build me some mono blocks out of a couple of old Lowery organ amps but he ran into issues. Looks like that's not going to happen. An integrated would be best for my needs space wise. I very rarely listen to local radio, most all the stations around here SUCK! I am in no big hurry, the Marantz does sound pretty good with them.
