I think they did a great job balancing action, the police state feel, character developement (of the main guy), and politics. So many Sci-Fi movies end up contradicting the paradigms they begin with. This one stayed true to itself. Yes - the Oscars shouldn't be taken too seriously. I think The Hurt Locker got best picture because of its subject material. I liked the movie a lot, and was surprised at its awards. Comparing The Hurt Locker and Avatar is not fair to either movie. Too different.
