help with receiver selection!

First of all, these forums are great. I have learned alot from just reading the quesitons and answers here. I am new to the HT arena and am in the process of putting together a system. My wife and I like to both watch movies and listen to music. So far I have:

RF3II mains,RC3 center, and some old bookshelf speakers to temporarily use as the rear center/surrounds until I can find something better.(I would like to get the RS-3's, but the wife isn't so sure she likes the size), I have an svs 20-39pci on order. Now the big question, what receiver to get?

I read great things about the Outlaw 1050, but it doesn't have DPLII. Is this a big deal? The new Onkyo 600 has it and is about the same price. I would like to stay in the $500 range if possible. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can always chase a new format or surround function like PLII.

I recently got a Model 6000 Dish Network receiver and I think the Pro Logic sounds better than the old satleite receiver.

Source material is important. My S VHS sounds real good but picture is not even close to DVD.

I like DTS the best followed by DD 5.1.

I personally would use PLII very little; I watch DVDs and can get DD 5.1 from my sattelite.

i'm lookin forward to DPL II when my pre/pro upgrades.

thing is w/ dig cable & sat, unless it's certain DD 5.1 broadcasts available only on certain channels like hbo, starz & showtime, dig channel programs are broadcast in Dolby Digital (AC-3) 2.0. this is where DPL II would i think be great to use over DPL I.

some people say they also like 2 channel music in DPL II. i'll have to test that when (if) the time comes.

With my Denon 3802 and regular broadcast cable and digital cable the majority of stuff I get is Pro Logic. In this case the DPL II is a significant improvement - really makes a difference in the overall feel and imaging experience.

I do not like DPL II (at least with the Denon) for music. Too much emphasis on the center and that seems to change the music in a way I find disagreeable (sorry that is as scientific as I can get). However, I do like the 7 channel stereo - in this case I can set the center level very low and get a very good stereo (more Quad like) image that really enhances the music by filling the room without changing the original sound.

As always, this is my opinion and my ear....

dougdrake2,thanks for your opionion. souce material will be from a toshiba 2800 dvd player and a sony 5 disc cd player. I will also hook up my sony vhs to replay tv shows that I tape. We have 30-40 movies on vhs but we are buying and renting everything on dvd now. We have regular cable for now, but at some point I will probably upgrade to the digital cable, it's not that much more. I'm wondering if DPLII is that big of a deal. People seem split on using it for music listening. I am also reading the other threads regarding this. I would like to have my receiver by the time the sub ships. That should be in a couple of weeks. So I will have to make some decisions pretty quick. The local store will be getting the new onkyo 600's in next week. I think I will check one out and hopefully get some more feedback on the outlaw 1050. thanks.

craig6519, thanks, I was looking at the HK's, but than I read there were some quality control issues on their stuff in my price range. I don't know if that's a load of b.s. or not, but I am keeping my options open. A local retailer where I bought my klipsch speakers is getting in alot of new stuff and they are making great deals on existing stock including Hk. I'll check it out.
