It was a deal

I had to upgrade my reciever from a Yamaha RX-V800 to an RX-V1. That reciever is beyond huge and for crying out loud there are enough inputs to keep me busy with installs for the next 3 weeks. I decided to purchase a Klipsch Quintet with a KSW-12 for the bed room. I think the neighbors are a tad bit on the po'd side. cwm35.gif

Did you get the free RAV-2000 remote? Wait till you try to program that. If you didn't get it, log onto the Yamaha website and check it out.

I've had mine for about 18 months and love it. A lot of people complain about Yamaha and Klipsch, but I think they are a great combination.

I haven't had the time to mess around with the remote. The directions that came with the RX-V1 are HUGEcwm10.gif It's going to take me a week to get everything working right. BTW, I agree with you Klipsch and Yamaha are a great combo. cwm11.gif

cwm15.gif Now that you have your nose buried in the Yamaha manual, keep an eye out for the Front Effects section. Front Effects allow you to bring your Mains in closer to the WEGA to better anchor your sound with the screen for HT.

Then mount a pair of system matching RB-3 speakers (only 15 lbs. and 15"x7.68"x9") and mount them 6' high and watch your soundstage expand dramatically! The 35 watt amps built into your RX-V1 have more than enough power to drive the highly efficient Klipsch offerings.

Your RX-V1 also has the ability to automatically convert 5.1 Dolby Digital or dts into 6.1 discrete! All you need to do is put a R*3 mono-pole speaker on the your rear center... hook it up to your RX-V1 and enjoy yet another dimension in sound.

Actually, a RC-3 makes a great Rear Effects speaker... the timbre match is designed to be close to the mains, it weighs only 29 lbs., the tapered array helps in speech clarity... and most important, it is a sealed unit and can be mounted on a shelf or atop a piece of furniture on a back wall.

Which brings us around to facing the facts that 5.1 (and 6.1) sound is engineered for identical speakers in all but the subwoofer positions. Since 5.1 digital movies (which become 6.1 digital movies in your RX-A1) sound is oriented toward sounds that occur "on screen" the mixers put over 75% of the sound through the front center speaker.

So, the most dynamic upgrade you can make to your Ref 3 based system would be to have another RF-3 converted to be a center speaker (as I did with my custom KLF-30 Center) and use the RC-3 as your rear effects speaker. A solution that doesn't require carpentry skills might be to put an RC-7 in the front center position... while it may not be as close a match in timbre... it would have a greater dynamic for handling the burden put upon the center channel now by 5.1 and for the foreseeable future.

Take your time... and you will find your "deal" is probably even better than you thought it was going to be. Enjoy! cwm32.gif -HornEd

Thanks HornEd, I'm going to try those tips you gave me. cwm11.gif I have been so busy for these last few weeks that I haven't had too much time to mess around with my system. I figure that after a day or two of studing the "manual / novel" from Yamaha cwm15.gif I will be ready to make the neighbors move. cwm32.gif
