  3. Mike, Thanks for this list, it's a great effort. I found a couple of articles missing: "That Damping Factor", Audio 03/70 "The Mud Factor", Audio 10/70 Also, "How to Get Best Results from a Klipschorn" was published in Hi-Fidelity not FM and Television Thanks, Jim mud_factor.pdf damping_pwk.pdf
  4. This is what it looked like the last time I saw it. It's cool that it's on display now in DC.
  5. I found the whole Crabbe article for the concrete horn. Not likely to happen in the house, but there is that pesky neighbor[:@] Jim 6711crabbe.pdf
  6. Nothing's wrong with your strings. The effect is called aliasing, and you see it most often with car wheels in movies and on TV. The scan rate of the camera is too slow to catch the string frequency, so you get the strobe effect that Bruce mentioned. Nice score by the way, and good use of tools at hand. My son (13) wants to learn to play guitar, so I guess I need to watch the trash. He already plays piano and trumpet. Jim
  7. Don't take this the wrong way, but you suck. Nice score, and pay no attention to me, I'm just jealous. Jim
  8. I had one of these Omega's for about 25 years. I paid about $250 when I bought it, then $500 to get it serviced, then sold it on ebay for $2000. Now i have an Armitron self winding skeleton watch. I tell people it just gives me the time and they don't believe me.
  9. Hey Randy, Was in Huntsville staying with relatives for the white Christmas. Luckily it was gone by the time I needed to drive home. At least it's snow and not ice, I hated ice storms when we lived there. Enjoy the warmth, the tunes and the day off.
  10. So now with your new $24.99 item and a receipt, can you Return/exchange it for what you really wanted that cost more without losing money?
  11. I would agree with the edge banding. Get some extra and start experimenting with different stains until you find a good match. Be careful with the BLO where you need to glue veneer to, so it will stick. Your's look almost exactly like mine, enjoy them.
  12. Amy, I expected to see you singing backup[:S]
  13. Don't know how visible it was elsewhere, but I watched it come out of the high clouds and pass over us just moments before it landed. It is an awsome sight indeed, and it's amazing how much noise it makes for a glider. I will find out how much my wife saw, she was at the landing strip, and got to go out on the runway after the safety guys cleared the area.
  14. Marty, For an experiment, it could be wired into a dryer outled. Notice I didn't say that you should (gotta watch out fer them lawyers) , but that's how I would do it. Just be careful out there.
  15. What you really need is an electrician to install a 240v outlet near your turntable. Then get and adapter from US to furrin so you can use the European plug. Any inverter that will get you from 120 to 240 will have so much noise it might not be useable.
  16. Good call JL, I had to replace the cables on mine this weekend. After 30+ years, I guess it was time.
  17. Thanks Gil, I didn't know either of these existed. Jim
  18. Now I know what to do with all of the bottles of outdated glue in the garage.
  19. At home probably < 100 dB, at work 146 to 165 dB +/- 3 dB.
  20. While it's true that there are limitations to what the woofer or horn can reproduce (upper freq. limit) the low pass filter (inductor) before the woofer keeps it from trying to work at HF, which eliminates some distortion.
  21. One of the nice things about using coat hangers is they tend to be spaced farther apart. This lowers the capacitance which tends to skew the high frequency response.
  22. With the week off from work and the wife away, I have been getting some of MY backburner projects moved to the front for a change. One of those was seeing if I could get the old Dual 1249 spinning again. The last time it saw the light of day, after we moved to FL 4 years ago, it was dead, no lights no hum, nothing. So this morning I dug it out of the closet and plugged it in, still nothing (it was worth a try). Twenty minutes of troubleshooting and a little drilling and soldering, the broken terminal in the splice block is fixed and it's spinning and humming (sometimes rather loudly) again. It for sure needs a new belt, but I'm using it as is for now until I can order a new one. I also thought the V15-III needed a new stylus, but fortunately my memory was off on that one, it works fine. So now it's hooked up and playing albums that haven't been listened to since I got married almost 20 years ago. Started with Mason Williams - Hand Made, a great acoustic recording. MIami Sound Machine - Primitive Love, a nice demo album, really works the squawkers. Scandal - Warrior, great vocals by Patty Smyth. Charlie Daniels Band - Million Mile Reflection. Laura Branigan, more great vocals. Now listening to Sheena Easton. It's a trip to see and listen to my collection from 20-30 years ago, it's way more eclectic than I remembered. I can also show it off to the kids when they get home tonight, they've never seen or listened to a record. Spinning vinyl, what a concept. Have a great holiday season.
  23. Fini, We can get you on the tour, which is very interesting, but can't promise the inside of the VAB or a launch.
