Jay481985
Saw this on the recent episode of PBS NOVA ScienceNow but there is no clip of that yet. Interesting is an understatement.
Islander
When two senses are getting conflicting information, the brain can make strange conclusions. Another example of this can occur when cornering on a motorcycle at an extreme lean angle. If the rider keeps his head in line with the horizon, the side forces it feels coincide with what he's seeing, so there's no problem. However, if he keeps his neck straight and his head is in line with the lean angle of the bike, the balance organs in the skull sense a "downward" pull that matches the bike's lean angle, due to the centrifugal forces on the bike, but disagrees with the visible horizon. In a long sweeping turn, some riders can become quite disoriented.
