Schu
just a quick question about two subs... there isa guy locally that has a rw10 and a rpw10 for sale... which is a better sub and why please? I've never run a sub in my system, and I would rather have it geared towards music than movies. I've read the technical specs, and they appear to be quite different. I prefer a very tight sound versus a booming sound thanks
garyrc
I prefer a very tight sound versus a booming sound Often a problem with subs, IMO, particularly if you are used to the tight bass of La Scalas or Klipschorns. Search this forum for "horn subwoofers" ... somebody on the forum has written about them, and I'd guess that they might sound tighter, due to less cone excursion within range due to being horn loaded, and fewer and lower magnitude sidebands (???). I've also heard about some kind of sharp cutoff at the bottom of the sub's range to prevent distortion due to freakish movie mixers including the occasional signal at 8 Hz, which, it is my understanding, even modern theaters can't reproduce. Some pepole don't know the difference between pushing the envelope and bursting the envelope. I would think a reasonable signal at 20 - 25 Hz should be more than adequate to convey the director's intent. Many of the classic 70 mm movie houses used speaker systems (albeit across 5 channels behind the screen, plus surround) with a nominal cutoff at 40 Hz, with some slight signal at 20 dB, and they sounded great, and very tight and clean.!
