Heresy HIP's

Hey everybody, I just joined the online Klipsch Community. I own a pair of 1989 Heresy II's (HOL) that grace my home system. The golden oak cabinets look as good as the day I bought them 22 years ago! I'm currently looking at maybe picking up a pair of Heresy HIP's for a small portable PA system that I want to put together. I don't know the age of these, but the serial #s are 3222 and 3223. They are birch with rounded edges and a coat of black paint, they have pole mounts in the bottom, and they must have been flown at one time, because there are small holes drilled into the tops. They appear to be in really good shape. Can you guys tell me what drivers and crossover would typically be installed in the HIP? Also, what would you recommend for subs to complement the HIP's and what amps would you recommend to drive them? Finally, would you recommend replacing the crossover?

Thanks!

Thanks Bill. I I have been on the lookout for replies by Michael. I know that the ported Heresy is lighter on bass, but I'm hoping that someone can recommend a relatively small pair of subs that would fill out the bottom nicely with two HIP's. Doesn't the HIP use a heavier-duty bass driver (maybe a K42?) than a standard Heresy?

Is this for home stereo or PA?

How low do you want it to go?

The first HIPs used an OEM Electro-Voice driver that was basically the EVM-12L, it was about the same loudness as a Klipschorn above 200hz or so, dropped like a rock below 90hz.

all this info has been posted before, use the SEARCH function within this Forum for HIP, Heresy Industrial - I'm sure all the answers are here.

KP115 will get you by if you want to stay portable and Klipsch, some of those had internal crossovers at 150 hz so you plug amp into sub, it plays the lows and sends output to your HIP/KP250/whatever from 150 Hz up. KP115 isn't a super glorious sub, but it will contribute to low end and save you from blowing up your top cabs.

Welcome to the Madness

Hey Michael,

What do you think about pairing the HIP's with a couple of Wharfedale dlx15b 15" passive subs? They are similar to the kp-115sw that Klipsch used to make. They have a range of 38 - 2000 Hz, but they have a passive crossover at 150 Hz that can feed a full range cab from the same amp channel. They run in either 4 or 8 ohms, and they are rated at 700W continuous. They can also be bi-amped.

I recently picked up a pair of black painted birch HIP's for $200. I'm also looking at maybe getting one or two used QSC EX1300 amps to drive these. I'm slowly putting together a small PA system to do small gigs and, heck, just to have fun with in the garage! I've run FOH sound for churches and for concert artists for about 25 years now, I still like to play with this old equipment, though!

Let me know your opinion on the above setup. Thanks in advance!
