How would you like your surround speakers?

I have two possible options for surround speaker placement, please tell me which you think is better.

1. Place the surround speakers 8 feet from the floor on the side walls and just slight behind listener's ears or in-line with listener's ears.

2. Place the surround speakers on the back wall at any height (ie. according to your preferance).

KAiN64 WDST surrounds like you have tend to do best when they are on the sides about a foot over year head and with the woofer aimed about a foot or so behind your ears.

In that way, the rear horn tweeters will be bouncing off the rear wall to create a bassless rear center effect. The little woofers will woof some high bass toward your ears... and the front 180° spray from the horn tweeters will combine with your front speakers to envelope you in ambience beyond the mixer's wildest intention.

Fortunately, your Ultra + Samson will fill in the bottom and bring an extra dimension to your WDST side-surrounds. Enjoy! -HornED

PS: These suggestions are from my home WDST tests.

HornEd, that's the problem, I cannot place them a foot above ear level. If I am going to place them on the side walls, they have to be around 5-6 feet above ear level due to a built-in closet in the wall on the right side of the room. But, I could place them on the back wall at ear level or a foot above ear level.

Hey, KAiN64, 5'-6' should be just about perfect. The deflection from your sidewalls should solve the problem seated or standing. I tried them at 7' and found that having them a foot to a foot and a half lower helped with the reflections off the ceiling as well as the saturation of the sweetspot. Let me know how it works for you. -HornED

So you are saying that having the RS-7s 5-7 feet above ear level is okay? If so, then great! Smile.gif

But, how come most people say that the surrounds should be at ear level or just above ear level?

No, I think HornED meant 5-7 feet above the floor. I am exactly 6 feet tall myself, so I found when I mounted mine, I just simply stood up straight and stared the speaker square into the center of the woofer cone and mounted it right there at that height, thus placing the center of the woofer cone at my eye level. It turned out to be the perfect height for my particular room and setup.

Thanks. Smile.gif

BTW, when I mount the surround speakers on the side walls, what should the distance be between the surround speaker and the back wall?

KAiN64 asked:

Idealy, you'll want the sourrounds mounted right at or slightly behind where your ears would be when sitting at the listening/watching position. The user's guide for the speakers does not mentioned a minimum distance from the back wall, but I would imagine that you'd want at least 2 or 3 feet. In otherwordss, don't mount them right up into the corner.

Edit - The user's guide for the speakers does mention that they can be mounted on the back wall, although for optimal performance, the side walls would be preferable.

I guess the best thing would be is to try to mount them as best as you could and see how they work. If not, you could try other postionsn.

I am pretty limited in where I can place mine. On my left side, there is one small section of wall between a door and large picture window. On my left, There one small section of wall before the room opens out into the dinning area. Those are the only two places I have to mount my surrounds. It just so happens they are in that ideal postion of being right at about where my ears are when sitting on my couch (although a little forward).
