jfg02
I there. I received last week my two RF-82s, which I plan to use as surround on a 5.1 HT system. I wonder if I should place them on rear or on side of the listening position ? Also, what would be the minimal distance from the listening position ? mustang guy
The following is talking about bi-pole speakers. Yours are uni-directional, so IMO, they should be slightly farther back from the THX recomendations. Taken from this link on THX's website 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker Set Up A 5.1 surround system has five discrete audio channels: Left, Right, Center, Left Surround, Right Surround and the Subwoofer. Front Left & Right Speakers (L & R): Place the Front Left and Right speakers at ear height, producing a 45° angle as viewed from the main seating position. This delivers a wide sound stage and precise localization of individual sounds. Center Channel Speaker ©: Place the Center channel speaker either above or below the TV. Then, aim the speaker either up or down to point directly at the listener. If you have a perforated projection screen, center this speaker both horizontally and vertically behind the screen. Surround Left & Right Speakers (SL & SR): Place the SL & SR speakers between 90° to 110° to each side and 2 feet or higher above the listener. Subwoofer (Sub): If you have two Subs, put them in the middle of opposing walls. If you have one, place it in the middle of the front wall. Zen Traveler
I sit within 4.5 ft of my side surround towers and 9 ft from my rear "mini" towers...Fwiw, converting 5.1 to 7.1 using direct radiating speakers is AWESOME for both movies and music if set up correctly. jfg02
I bought uni-directionals mainly because I'll use the system also to play SACD/DVD+ music mastered on 5.1. Was that a good move ?
cornfedksboy
I think you'll want them on the sides. Distance from MLP will likely be dependent on your room configuration.

YES! [Y] I listen to multichannel music many hours a day and if you have a primary Listening Position similar to what is pictured then you should be good to go....Otoh, we have a 5.1 HT in the bedroom and use WDST speakers and they work well because we are sometimes in bed and others elsewhere in the room...With the horns being pointing in the direction we are in (RS-3 on sidewall at the head of the bed) allows multichannel music to sound good, regardless where we are. jfg02
Another question that I have is the weight the RC-62 would support. Could I place my HK 3600 (31.1 lbs) on it without causing any damage to the speaker ?
