KLF 30 Rebuild, crazy deal

Dear Masters of Klipsch,

I just lucked out today and bought a pair of KLF 30's for 50 bucks. Obviously a crazy low price for these speakers, and actually my second pair, which I am quite excited about(going to use them as my rear speakers in my setup). Gotta love getting Mahogony KLF 30's from a guy who doesnt even know what they are :) The speakers happen to have some scuffing, and a bit of water damage/dings, as well as seperation (1.5mm) at the bottom corner. Everything else is in perfect working order.

I am planning on covering the speakers in an epoxy, or strong material of such order, so I can use them for parties without worrying.

My question is this: As many of you know a lot about speakers, and maybe even DIY builds, what would be anyones advice as far as rebuilding the cabinets completely. My other option is to sand down the water damaged areas, and attempt to repair with wood compound. Also, as a side note, they reek of chain smoking.

Enough incoherent rambling. What advice does anyone have? Will sanding hurt the speakers significantly?

Sorry for formatting... Not sure how to insert returns.

Got a big horse shoe hidden somewhere huh? Here is the best advise I can give you. Replace the stock poly tweeter diaphragms they are the worst thigs Klipsch ever sold. Put in a new pair of Bob Crites titanium tweeter diaphragms in both your sets. Use the second set for your centre channel front and rear. The centre channel is the single most importand speaker in a HT system and generates more of what you hear than all the other speakers combined. Why bother with a rebuild just patch them up and go. You can light sand them and re coat them with what ever you like from urethane to epoxy paint what ever you like. Best regards Moray James.

yes substantial does not even begin to describe the difference. As I said the stock poly is a very poor performer. The titanium diaphragms Bob sells are the best I have used they are absolutly first class finest available and they are cheap. You own KLF30 and you actually are wondering if a small two way designed to fit on or under your TV is going to be better? In an ideal HT set up all the speakers would be identical. The centre channel is the single most important speaker in the intire system. That's where your best should go. What more can I say? Spend the 60 bucks on one of the sets ot titanium diaphragms. If the KLFC7 is in good order buy it and clean it up and sell it on Ebay and you will have a bag of cash in your hand but if you have or can make the room to use one of the KLF30 for a centre channel then to do else wise would be a mistake. I hope this makes sense and helps. Best regards Moray James.
